Making the best out of every situation is great advice. One of my favorite backpacking trip memories happened several summers ago in California. It was an unexpectedly cold night and there was a slight chance of rain in the forecast. That night, it ended up pouring down rain while I was eating dinner outside of my tent and practically all of my stuff got soaked. A few minutes after the heavy rain stopped, I decided to start a campfire to warm up, but then it started raining again. When the off and on rain finally stopped, I was able to warm up by a campfire. Despite what happened that night, I was fortunate that God blessed me with a great trip and now, I look back at that night as one of my more memorable experiences on a backpacking trip.

At 2:24 I had to stop and wait for my eyes to clear. It was some time, in fact, before I could stop my eyes from watering up. I was overwhelmed. I'm pushing sixty and have been all over this country, in all that time and all those places there have been two things that I was guaranteed to find; Beautiful, kind-hearted people surrounded by beautiful, awe-inspiring landscapes. I found the same in every other country I have ever visited. I don't know, there is a disconnect somewhere. I thought the Internet was supposed to bring the world together, if it did it brought us all to the fight club. Watching this video reminded me we aren't hopelessly lost yet, we've just gone off the trail a bit. Anyway, thanks. Wishing everyone bright days and peaceful nights.

Randy, Shane is so lucky to have a Dad to take him on this trip this summer, I have really enjoyed all the videos form your vacation with Shane this year (and he is getting very good at his sound bites!). I particularly enjoyed this video, and your editing, as I have not been to Carters of the Moon even though I have been to most NPS sites in the Pacific Northwest. How nice was it that you had a chance to talk to that young man who was apparently a volcanologist, who was able to explain about how the cindercone was formed, and how the lava flowed at that location. Just like your earlier video about all the neat people that we meet at national parks - - this is another great experience with both that gentleman, and Ranger Becky. We are staying on the northwest Oregon coast this week, and yesterday I was at Fort Clatsop (Lewis & Clark National Historical Park), and I improvised as “Ranger Mikey” at one pf the unmanned locations for an hour, answering questions (as I have been coming here all my life). THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS EXCELLENT VIDEO, . . . Mike

Another great trip with your son...Craters of the Moon NM is a relatively unknown gem but one I enjoyed as a side trip on one of my Yellowstone adventures. One thing I remember was a dark brown slope on the paved road that was filled with white flowers; the flowers were equally spaced almost like a formal garden. Also, the drive in from the east was interesting with large buildings related to nuclear issues...barren volcanic land that goes on for miles & miles but unique in its own way. Nearby City of Rocks National Preserve is also quite spectacular. I love that you highlight some of our lesson known parks.

Great video and great job including the educational insight from the ranger. Really enjoyed that aspect. That is a really cool looking park and has an awesome name to boot. Such a unique environment but too bad about the lava tubes. But as you said, you have to roll with punches on trips such as these because rarely do things go as planned. Idaho is one of four states I haven’t ventured to yet but a nice trip to the west coast would take care of the other three. This park is always in the back of my mind when thinking about trips out west and your video shows it would not be a wasted stop. However, in researching Idaho I think I could plan a whole trip just dedicated to this state alone. Looks like a beautiful area and the Sawtooths look amazing. Hopefully sometime in the future. Looking forward to the rest of the videos from Idaho.

America's Parks when I was in middle school they had a picture of it in my geology book and I wanted to go so bad!! My parents never took us so my Husband and I finally went this year! It’s very interesting landscape.

I was just thinking while watching this that even when you "run out" on NPS sites, you can always go back to the places you've been and have a completely different experience. I'd love to see you go back to Craters of the Moon and explore the caves.

Yes, Normie! Always seem to "leave something behind" which promotes a return trip! :)

I had heard of this Nat'l Monument from a Geology lecture but had no idea what it was exactly! Wow, it's gorgeous! Definitely going to make plans to visit that place someday. If you liked CotM, you'd probably really like Snow Canyon State Park in Utah (I know that you probably don't do state parks, but Snow Canyon and Goblin Valley are some nice places that I enjoyed visiting). SC is very similar, a highly volcanic area (that's still active I think) with lots of lava tubes, two cinder cones, and lava everywhere. The only difference, I think, is that the volcanic areas are surrounded by Navajo Sandstone.

Hey Natalie, thanks for sharing such insightful information! Enjoy a good state park from time-to-time. Made some notes!

Spent half a day here when driving from Yellowstone/Grand Tetons back to WA, and it turned out to be an amazing place! The caves were not open due to COVID, but still the unique landscape was absolutely worth a visit. 🙌

Neat to hear you've been out there! Idaho has been one of those states I've driven around, but never visited. Like you... worked well on the return trip from Yellowstone. Take care!

Should visit thousand springs state Park/Ritter Island if you haven't yet. That's my favorite spot in southern Idaho. If you go during summer, you can swim in the crystal clear water. Not very deep but it's pretty

Craters is such an other-world experience! It's too bad the caves were closed. They are a lot of fun. You'll have to come back and try them again. As of right now, there are still small aftershocks and earthquakes happening in central Idaho, so who knows when they will be open to the public again. On another note, were you able to make it on your California trip yet? Not sure about the fire situation there, but here in the northwest the weather has cooled significantly and the fires seem to be dying down.

Hey Andrew, yes, really enjoyed "Craters" and the time in Idaho! Cancelled the CA trip due to the wildfires and booked several days in CO. Beautiful to see those Aspens in all their glory. Our 2 videos with you guys are next in the line-up!

Sorry the caves were closed. My Dad and I visited Craters of the moon a few years back and exploring the caves was definitely a highlight. We still have the thick smoke hanging around western S.D. off and on. We haven't had any moisture to speak of in 5 weeks. Luckily no major fires in the Black Hills.

Hey David, thankful no major fires in the area! Sad to see the destruction so many have experienced. Still a great time at Craters - neat to hear you've been there!

Wait! Did you get your National Park Passport Book stamped? Now you have to drive all the way back! You usually show the stamping footage at the end. Few years ago I stopped in Shenandoah National Park Visitors Center to get my passport book stamped and the rangers apologized that they were out of ink. I said "No worries, I always bring my own ink pad just in case." They lost composure and giggled when I pulled the 2 color option ink stamp out of my backpack and stamped my passport and park map. I guess it was kinda nerdy.

What a great story, Mark!!! You takes your cancellation stamps seriously! Good for you! Yeah, sadly missed the stamp on this one. Got caught up speaking with Ranger Becky and forgot!

I have been to 47 parks, several multiple times. Usually, the rangers are spectacular and go above the call of duty. I can only recall 2 bad experiences in all my interactions with a ranger...so yes 99% good is accurate. I'll leave the 1% to maybe a bad day. We all have those from time to time I have met 4 or 5 that are literally obsessed with the park they are at and they have studied a lot about it. I have to say the geyser gazers at Yellowstone are very knowledgable too. I have always said expect the unexpected at national parks. Our #1 issue is not having the right clothes. Always bring everything as I have been snowed on in July and everything in between. The parks seem to make their own weather.
