Thanks for the trip down memory lane. A few years ago I thought it would be neat if my boyfriend and I hiked half dome on my 31st birthday. We didn’t apply for a permit until 2 days prior...and we got it. It was meant to be as I ascended with a boyfriend and descended with a fiancé. It was an incredible bonding experience and momentous day for us. Thanks for documenting and sharing your hike!

Made it! Just wanted to make a quick post-trip comment. What an epic hike! Logged 20.5 miles and 5,896’ of elevation gain over the course of close to 13 hours. That was truly an amazing experience. Those cables looked a bit more daunting once I finally laid eyes upon them. Once I was on them and got a feel for it, any anxiety I had went away. No clip on the way up but I did clip on the way down. Holy cow, though. I got stuck for over an hour on the descent of the cables. Even encountered a bear on the trail. The best thing of all was that I got to spend 11 days alone with my wife on just an incredible trip. We went from Vegas to Valley of Fire to The Wave to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and finished it with five days in Yosemite. Speaking of the The Wave. Keep trying that lottery. It was incredible and lived up to the hype.

Randy, I’ve lived in the LA area since the 80’s and I recall visiting Yosemite for a hot minute back in the 90’s. I’m a 5 hour drive to Yosemite but was never compelled to visit because...I live 5 hours away and can visit it anytime. After viewing this video in 2020 during the lockdowns, I actually booked a few nights in Yosemite in October 2020. We just came back from a week in Yosemite making it my second visit in 6 months-20 years after the prior visit! I actually purchased the annual inter park pass because I plan to visit more national parks this year and hope to return to Yosemite in fall. @AmericasParks5 жыл бұрын
@@harpoon_bakery162 Great question! Thankfully my knees are one of the few body parts that doesn't ache. At some points there are a lot of steps going up the waterfalls. I'd say most the hike (80%) is a gradual uphill descent. I'm a big fan of hiking poles - it takes so much weight off the lower body. With some poles I think you'd be fine. Even if you go partially up (say Vernal Falls) and back it's a fantastic hike!

@Justine carrington Just heard about that, Justine. So sad. Both of us agreed that, after we finished, that it was a safe hike as long as you stay within the cables and pay attention. Not sure if you watched the entire video, but Natalie did better than me - both in physical abilities and the absence of fear. She loved the hike and was thankful we did it - even wants to return. Stash water along the way so you don't have to carry all that weight the entire hike. Back in 87. I was the only person up there my entire outing. Started hiking before sunrise. It's so easy when you're young. Never saw another person until I was heading down from the shoulder to the falls. Next time up 3 years later over 100 people and the next year people from top to bottom on the cables and maybe 1000 people up top. Never went back. It was inevitable they'd start requiring permits and controlling the crowds.
@AmericasParks5 жыл бұрын
Wise words, thank you! If I go back, I'd revise my water management - either filter it from the stream, or as you suggested, stash some along the way. Seeing Natalie and you pull yourselves up that mountain reminded me of the time I took my girls hiking in the Black Hills. We were on the Lover Leap trail. Girls were about 21 and 13. We knew that the first half mile would be the worst very steep and rocky. My youngest Emily started complaining early and often. Tried to encourage her but there reached a point I lost it and gave her the truck keys and told her to go back. My daughter Rachel and I completed the hike about 3 hours later. That was the day that cost me the father of the year award. Lol. Seriously though that had to have been an epic experience.

Congrats to you and your daughter. I'm always impressed with parents that take their young kids on these challenging hikes (more impressed with the kids). Its such a great confidence builder, teaches self-reliance, and gets them out of their cozy, entitled head-space. I've passed a 12 yr old on the summit of Whitney, and a mother with 2 boys less than 10 heading to Trail Camp (12,000 ft) with full backpacks. On the flip side - I passed a man with his 13 year old son on the way up Whitney Mountaineer's Route - the kid was whining and groaning the entire way. He couldn't get out of his own head-space to appreciate what was all around him, and the timelessness of it. I admired the father, but felt disappointment for the kid. Hopefully, he will look back on the experience with a more open mind and find value in it. My own hiking experiences did a lot for me even in my 50's.

I met some incredible people who were fighting off incredible pain and managing to still be supportive and encouraging of other runners. I do wish people were like that all the time. Thank you for the video!

@@AmericasParks Thank you for your kind wishes :) I've been obsessed with National Parks lately and just got a lifetime annual pass. My dream is to visit them all (or as many as I can) with my wife and 2 daughters, before my vision goes completely. I stumbled upon your Chanel and have been slowly watching them all. My oldest daughter (6yrs old) was looking over my shoulder while I was watching one of your Acadia videos just yesterday. She said "WOW" when seeing the view from the Bee Hive. I told her I wanted to take her there someday and show her all these beautiful places. I teared up a bit thinking about it. Thank you again for posting your adventures with your family. I've enjoyed them greatly and sincerely have been inspired by them. Not sure what you intended to get from posting these videos but please know they have given this ol' blind guy inspiration and a great deal of hope

Nicely done! I've hiked HD twice now, the first time with my Wife, the cables had not been set and were simply laying against the rock. That was harrowing!! We picked up the heavy cables and went up Batman style! We made it, but I would never do that again. Second time was with my Family, and having your kids going up the cables (all properly set, this time) adds a whole 'nother dimension of nervousness! I really enjoyed watching this and remembering the different legs of the journey. What a great memory to have with your Daughter. Thanks!!

As amazing as this video is (an that’s an understatement), what’s most enjoyable to me is that you did this with your daughter. I’m from the east coast and have never done anything close to that. I have done a lot of hiking local with my daughter. Out greatest achievement is maybe 1/4 way down the Grand Canyon. But I can say I have never felt closer to my daughter than when we were hiking. Great job Dad! She will grow to be an amazing woman thanks in part to you.

Natalie, you were awesome, and remind me of my daughter in this video when I hiked over some cliffs in Hawaii with her at the same age, I never knew or realized she had a concern about the heights until we were almost to the top of a cliff we would still have to climb down an hour later (as, yes, lava was coming toward us). She let me know her fear and then we challenged it together as a team, just like you and your Dad did. You have an amazing spirit. Congrats on your hike to Half Dome & down into the Grand Canyon. Our daughter was 9 yrs. young the 1st time she hiked Half Dome (1996). That was before you had to have a permit. It was a father/daughter hike also. The following year, I hiked it with them. Exhilarating once you get to the top. My next feat in CA was Mt. Whitney, twice (Oct. 2007 & Sept. 2008). I, also hiked down the Grand Canyon (twice). Hoping to do it again on my 70th birthday (next July). My motto, ‘Never grow old.’

Great video of the greatest trial I ever hiked! Life changing and forever in my memories and oh the stories! Year was 1988 21 years old so no cell phones so I don’t really have any visual memories except for one snap shot someone in our group took half way up the cables. No permits needed back then. We got going too late and the last 2 miles were in the dark. But the cables and summiting Half Dome was a n accomplishment I will always remember! It’s also the day I became terrified of hieghts!, on the edge up on top I had this weird, powerful inner feeling of leaping off the edge straight down into the valley. Can’t exp,ain’t it, just turned pale and my buddies asked what’s wrong and I told them I feel like I’m gonna jump. Thankfully they pulled me away from the edge and I was able to get down the cables. But have been afraid of heights ever since! Thanks for the great documenting of this hike! Brought back a lot of memories!, after watching your Grand Canyon trail video I’ve been watching your stuff and came across this one! Superb job!
