Everything I've cooked in this unit has come out great kzbin.infoUgkxD4Qeo-HRLxMfom_PDinM_SBfes00qJsB ! Everything tastes so good. Some of the recipes I've changed a little to improve the taste. For instance, for french fries which call for no oil, I spray them with olive oil and season them with salt and pepper. They come out great! It makes the best toast I have ever eaten. The recipe I use calls for lightly buttering both sides of the bread. It calls for cooking at 400 degrees for 5 minutes on one side and then 2 minutes on the other side. This time has a lot to do with the kind of bread you are using...so keep an eye on it. Also, the fans in this Ninja are a lot stronger than other air fryers. So lay a metal spoon or something on the bread to keep it from flying around. It's a little extra work to use your Ninja as a toaster but it is worth it!

One thing that I love about America's Test Kitchen is that they really do stand by their recommendations. You will very often see recommended products being used in videos long after they attained that status. Case in point: The sponge Hannah used to demonstrate cleaning an air fryer heating element is an O-Cedar Scrunge, ATK's top pick for kitchen sponges.

You guys are the best! Never steered me wrong yet! This summer i purchased the Instant Air Fryer and it has been revolutionary. First off, I don’t have AC so in the summer it was amazing to be able to cook so many things without heating up the house. So fast to heat up frozen rolls without waiting for the big oven to get to temperature. Best grill cheese sandwiches I have ever made. No burning. I actually did not bother using my propane grill because the temp was so controlled the summer hamburgers were perfect every time without needing to run outside checking only to find I crisped them too much. I was so impressed I have since bought three more of these units for family members and everyone is as pleased as I have been. Thanks for the new extra tips.

They're amazing if you need to keep the temp down. You don't have to preheat and the fryer turns off on its own, too. They're a miracle especially if you're AuDHD like me or my sister. She kept leaving the stove on at like 450°f for 24+ hours and I just wouldn't bake anything at all because it took too long to heat up

Hi, great segment. One suggestion about digital controls…I have a blind friend who likes to cook but helping her shop for appliances that have controls she can operate is frustrating. @@lizgander9172 Thank you. My friend uses voice activated instructions/controls where she can. HOWEVER, all the instructions available via phone and Alexa apps don't help if the appliances have only visual (ie., digital) controls. She gets around town (ordering rideshare), reads her mail (paper as well as electronic) and for many years has taught visually impaired how to navigate efficiently in their lives. All that being said, if she buys a new appliance, the are a big issue and not all have voice activated through Alexa or iPhone. It's time America's Test Kitchen thinks a bit more broadly when they're doing their tests.

I got a Vortex Plus and did their suggested "burn in" process but still for the first week and a half or so of use it stank up the house with hot plastic smell. Porous foods like tater tots and fries even got the hot plastic taste. Lots of other people online complained of the same issue, and some even had their machines replaced with mixed results. Mine has finally cleared up, but I was very close to returning it.

Airfryer is great for making onsen eggs, set a low temperature 80 degrees celsius and then 17-20 mins and you have eggs that you can keep for later. You can always adjust the temps and timings to your own liking, no messing with hot and cold water baths and less variables with more eggs.

I live by myself, and since I got an Air Fryer a few months ago, I have not used my oven once. I used your last ATK video as a guide and got the one that was best for me. Sure, it takes up a lot of counter real estate, but to be able to fire everything in the basket and only have to shake it once is a game changer. I really haven't used any recipes, as I just adapted what works in an oven, to my air fryer. Also, the whole "pre-heat" thing is pointless. I found it makes no difference at all. Thanks to everyone at ATK for constantly doing the dirty work so we don't have to!🧡🧡🧡

After about 7yrs, and well over 1000 meals - and probably just as many snacks, my GoWise USA air fryer (I named it R2Dfood) died last night. It wasn't the fault of the unit, either. My son was using R2 during a nasty thunderstorm in the area - there was a power blip (pretty sure it was Force lightning) and R2Dfood was killed. We will hold services tonight but in the meantime I am here researching a suitable replacement. It will not be easy to replace my reliable R2 unit but I am glad ATK is always here to help.

Here’s a question to which I could use an answer: if we have an oven with a convection feature, can we use that instead of an air fryer? Maybe a video highlighting how best to use convection for a variety of foods, including “fried” foods, would be useful for people like me? (I have watched a number of videos from British cooks and bakers, and they regularly offer oven settings in both regular and, as they call it, “fan” mode.)
@laurameakin
@laurameakin Жыл бұрын
Hi I’m from Scotland our ovens can be confusing. We have 3 kinds gas that will use gas mark for setting temps then traditional convection ovens with no fan they will need to heat up to a higher temp to cook food as there’s no fan to circulate the heat. So generally a 210°c on convection can be adjusted down to 190° for fan oven without any noticeable difference to colour of food when done. Ovens with fans are more standard now. But all our pre packed food has instructions for ovens with or without fans. If it’s say frozen pizza 190°c is fine for fan oven any hotter it will be cremated.

I should’ve also said worst thing about any oven is waiting for it to heat up. Sure you can cook a greater amount of food but u may have to rotate trays if doing 2 or 3 trays of food to ensure even cooking. My oven is barely on since buying an air fryer.

@@laurameakin We are fortunate to have moved into a house that has two in-wall electric ovens, one larger and one smaller. It's a somewhat older unit - that is, if the control board ever finally goes it's not replace-able - but both ovens heat up quickly enough for us. I enjoy ATK and it has been a huge influence I cook. Instead of telling you in a recipe "cook it til it is done". What the !!! useless! ATK will tell you a time or a method which is great for a beginner. Those features that she mentions in on an air fryer about the timer, I have on mine and I would never buy any unit without it. She was right on. I for the most part have used their recommendation list a a bible as what to buy and for the most are perfect except things with power cords. I disagree with her cleaning statement Air fryers are a real pain to clean and often I find it takes a way to long to clean. I bought an gowize air fryer that died 4 months later no warranty SOL. Not a big fan. I bought a. Breville espresso machine, choked after 15 mths. That was an expensive mistake, out of warranty. They said for $500 and shipping they would fix it. Until the next time it breaks for the same reason and I can spend the same amount again. I chucked it. I went back to the old rancilio which lasted me 20 years.

The problem I have with most of the videos, including this one, is that the device is very much NOT designed for a one-person family. I don't eat much, so having a 6-quart device is not suitable. Almost nobody addresses the 'mini' variety. I have the Instant Vortex Mini. I have not found recipes or even optional cookware designed for that very small device. I wish and hope that would change.

I've got an air fryer recently and want to add a level to it, but the racks are all metal, and the air fryer is non-stick. I wondered if getting a silicone mat would be a good idea to prevent the metal feet of the rack chipping the non-stick coating of the bottom grille. nothing about this on the net, even though they are a very common accessory, and can double the size of your cooking.

It doesn't hinder the crispiness of the food because I make sure that I flip each one 1/2 way thru. Quick containment of the mess and easy clean-up, toss the foil in the trash. You don't have to pre heat, you can set the temp higher than 400 and you can do way bigger batches. The down side is that it is a $5,000.00 oven.

A buddy of mine gave me his old air fryer because he just got a bigger one. Used an air fryer for the first time the other night and it’s excellent. I’m always warming up small portions of food and muffins, biscuits and bread, and this made things so much easier. It sucks I haven’t thought about buying one in the past. And I like how even the best ones, are super inexpensive.. I would’ve thought these would be 300$ or more for the best top rated one but these are extremely affordable.

On your recommendation, I bought the InstaPot air fryer at Christmas and absolutely love love love it. I've used it at least once a day, often twice a day, every single day since I got it. Honestly, I wish I had two of them -- but I don't want that much stuff on my counters. OTOH, I gave my regular InstaPot pressure cooker away. I just never found it that useful.

I was surprised to see you using PAM spray in your air fryer. I've been told by many sources that it will damage the nonstick interior of an air fryer. Before I heard that, I was using it and the nonstick coating in my air fryer is definitely coming off.

Exactly. Don't use aerosols on non stick. There are spray bottles that you can fill with the oil of your choice and won't harm the equipment.

I had the problem with the nonstick coating when I had the Instant Vortex. Loved the machine but the coating came off pretty quickly. I was always gentle when I washed it (soft wash rag and dish soap) so I didn’t understand why the coating was coming off, until I read about the PAM spray thing. I bought a different air fryer (still prefer the Vortex) and haven’t used PAM in it once. Coating is still holding up over a year later. I would love to see ATK test this theory or at least address it.

We got your recommended Instant Pot air fryer in 2022 and we could never get rid of the heinous chemical stench the thing filled our house with whenever we used it. We tried everything including setting it on high outside in order to “cook off” the stank this thing regularly produced. We finally (and gleefully) tossed it in the garbage.

We purchased the Instapot model a few months ago. It does do a great job just as the review states. A few weeks ago though as I was dumping out a basket of fries. The entire bottom “removable” piece came out with the fries. It landed on the top of my hand and burned it pretty good. There were fry crumbs EVERYWHERE. I thought maybe we had we had inserted it the wrong way since there are arrows on the panel. Now it falls out every single time we use it. The piece either warped or the rubber stoppers shrank. It is not a good design.

Hey David! Great question. I went back and talked to our cookbook team and they said they use cooking spray sparingly in our recipes when the items have a high potential for sticking (breaded things, delicate things, sugary things). He said they haven't seen any damage to the machines--that said you are right! Most machines do not recommend this (including our winner). The lecithin in the nonstick spray can bond to the nonstick surface and create an invisible layer that makes the nonstick surface sticky going forward. This is also why we say to never use nonstick on a nonstick surface. In sum, you're right! It's fine sparingly but not as a regular practice.

I held off on getting an air fryer for a long time, but ended up with the Cosori Dual Blaze, which I love. If it gets particularly dirty, I add some water to the basket and turn the air fryer on for two minutes, dump the hot water and then wash it with soap and water. Though if it's greasy, like when I make bacon, I first wipe the basket out with paper towel (usually the one I used to pat the fat off the bacon). It makes clean up a breeze.

They shade on the oven style air fryers but I really like mine. Its like a big toaster oven that airfries and even has a dehydrator function. It has a way larger capacity I can cook multiple things at once. A pod style air fryer might be cool to have for cooking messier stuff but if I could only choose one id keep the large oven style.

I was expecting more comparisons between other air friers. I'm also surprised there was no mention of dual basket versions. We have a Ninja Foodi 2-basket version and being able to cook 2 different foods at once is key. That being said it's obviously smaller so best for meals for two.

I use the oxo good grip non stick wire rack over a large sheet pan lined with foil.. the trick is to load and season off the sheet pan. Shake just a bit to knock of any loose crumbs. Organize tots , fries.. what ever. Then sit rack on sheet pan. It’s the crumbs that smoke up the place. Yes, I have to clean up crumbs . But I am not getting a broom to turn off smoke detector 😊 if I am air frying something saucy.. I add a little water to sheet pan. My Samsung air fryer works great. Just took a min to figure out.

1st time buyers, you'll want the air fryer with the lighted window! And DON'T get the oven-style for all their stated reasons. When shopping, I start with the ATK Amazon link and looked around from there for size and feature upgrades that might work better in my situation. Found the 6qt Instant Vortex (DRAWER) model with the window and lighted interior. Added bonus, they had it on a Prime members sale for $129 ($30 off, it was Christmas time 2021) Window and light makes all the difference! The light is bright enough so you get full illumination of the food for accurate judging color and texture in doness and browning. Also saves from constantly opening and closing the drawer to check it when you are trying something new and unsure of how long to cook it before the next step (such as stirring or turning.) or before its done. We've had it for over a year and surprise!, found it the go-to cooking appliance when cooking for two. Fast cooking, easy cleanup, foods cook crispy, juicy while containing any splatter inside the drawer and not all over the stovetop. Its bigger than the appliances you are used to having on the counter but if you have an L- shaped counter like we do, it fits nicely in that otherwise unused deep corner countertop space, facing out for easy access and pushed back out of the main countertop traffic when not in use.
