Love this. Great to see a father and son doing things together like cooking. My husband and son would go golfing together. Makes for great memories and sets the example for the next generation. I use this video to make my fried rice and love the result. A similar fried rice dish I also make comes from a coworker from long ago from Picayune, Mississippi. He would use bacon grease as his oil (already changes the flavor profile). Leftovers from a meal (cooked chicken or turkey etc) onion, green pepper, celery (trinity), bacon, tomatoes, and cooked egg. Season with the soy sauce and serve with Louisiana hot sauce. Total bliss!

Aww, these guys are so sweet. I loved when the son helped his dad lift the heavy wok, and then the dad says "okay thank you". At the end, I was worried that the son was going to serve himself first, and then he gave his dad the first plate. I sighed with relief. Even his dad was worried and when he received the plate he pretty much congratulated him on his manners say "oh you're a good son". Reminds me of my dad. Maybe it's a generational thing, but my dad would have looked at me weird too if I dared serve myself before him. Gotta love family, and respect the hierarchy. Super cute! 🥰 Also, great tip on using day old white rice! I'm so making this today (minus the meats and mushrooms). I have a 6 year old's food palet, 😆👍

I was happy to see the eggs cooked separately, and then added back in later. I have seen so many videos for fried rice where they add the eggs at the beginning, and then just keep adding ingredients to the same wok. There is no way you can avoid overcooking the eggs if they are in the wok the entire time. It is also nice to see Kevin cooking with his Dad. My girls used to love cooking with me when they were little, but now they are 20 something and only want to cook recipes that they find on Buzzfeed, which are usually awful, yet appealing because they are all made "in a cup" or "in a muffin tin." Kevin gives me hope that my daughters may come to their senses in their 30s.😂

My fried rice has button mushrooms (I've never tried anything else, but maybe I will now) celery, onion, red bell pepper, ham or shrimp, soy sauce, a dash of salt, and a spoon of brown sugar with some water. I did the meat first, was going to wait the 45 min till I saw the next step, ran again to prepare the marinate, cut the orange, etc. I went back and forth from the living room to the kitchen till I decided to bring my Ipad to the stove. Having not read all the ingredients first, I looked like a Buster Keaton movie, or the Three Stooges, minus two, trying to add all the other ingredients! Not the proper to prepare a recipe. I’ll learn next time to read all the ingredients first, but I was too excited to make your recipe, I couldn’t help myself. That was really heartwarming, the exchange between you & your father! Certainly as you know life & how it goes - it is all about respect! I'm sure you were both, (challenging?) to work with at times - but it seems now you get along quite well, & father really appreciates you acting as his very demure & efficient helper! I always had same trouble, trying to be too good - it pisses them off! Though we good, & THINK we got it all down, we really do not.... Great job both of you anyway, & all Love to You & Father.

Great video with a great duo! I make fried rice at least once a week, it's my favorite way to use leftover rice (second favorite is rice pudding) and makes a quick lunch. And once you get solid recipe & technique down you can really riff on what you have hanging around the kitchen because it's not just a good way to use leftover rice, but a good way to use leftovers in general.

Just made my first ever batch of fried rice using this video as guidance. Turned out GREAT!!! So amazingly easy. Used leftover stir fry veggies, some smoked turkey sausage, mushrooms and, of course, eggs and cold rice. This makes a very satisfying meal and would be great to take to work for lunch or for a healthy afterschool snack for kids. Just pop in the microwave to warm up. This will definitely be my next day meal after making a stir fry dinner the night before. Thanks for the tip about oyster sauce, Kevin. I'll have to get some next time I go shopping.

Really love these videos. One suggestion: it would be nice to display the terms (especially Chinese names) on the screen so we know what to look for in grocery stores or do research.

@@donmiller2908 it's difficult to Google terms in a foreign language when you don't have a clue how the term is spelled. Hence my request.

@@itsthebrod It isn't difficult. For example, in the video the father is talking about using a Cantonese Chinese sausage, he said what it's called in Chinese but I didn't understand it. So I Googled "Cantonese Chinese sausage and got "lap cheong" which is what the father called it. Okay, now I have the spelling. So I Googled "Chinese characters for lap cheong" and I was directed here -> thereaderwiki.com/en/Lap_Cheong So at this site I learned that lap cheong was 腊 肠 in simplified chinese and 臘 腸 in traditional chinese. Now all you need is a printer and a shop that sells that sausage and you're in business. You can do the same for any other item he mentioned. You can find almost anything using Google.

@@donmiller2908 So you think your method is simpler than the video just putting the info up-front? Ok dude. I know how to use Google, but it's dumb to argue that that's a better method than the video adding simple text on the screen.

@@itsthebrod - I didn't say it was a simpler method, I just said it works. My point is that everyone is going to find fault with a video, they should have done this, they should have done that, etc. But if you want the information, it's out there. An hour of your time and you'd have everything he used to make fried rice. Or you could whine about how the contend creators didn't include whatever you decided to whine about.

Very close to the way I make my fried rice. I always cook the eggs first, the put them aside, then all the veggies & meat, and put that aside. Then I fry the rice and when it's almost done, I throw in all the veggies, meat, and egg. Last thing I put in is frozen peas as they only need to be warmed up - anything more and they get mushy. Also, I prefer using Basmati rice as it is dryer than Jasmine rice which I find tends to stick together in clumps more. I also like a bit of ginger in mine.

Never heard of bean sprouts in fried rice before and I grew up in San Francisco. When I was younger, basic fried rice had dried tiny shrimps, eggs, cubes of char siu and peas, sometimes diced carrots.

It was a bit strange to watch this episode, as it seemed he did not want to call his father "Dad". I was sensing some mild hostility from the son to the father. I really like the dad's honesty, especially the little stories about childhood.. there are lots of people in this world who did not like the same foods as a child that they like now so there's a lot of truth there. It just felt like there was a lot of emotional distance between the two.
