@@maryannarnaud6189 71 was my VN tour. I was lucky though. I went to VN where they had the worst beer. Then to Germany where the beer was awesome. I knew guys who were in Germany and then went to VN. Poor guys had to drink that horrible VN beer after having some of the best. Were you part of ASA? I was an MP.

I lived on Sheridan Kaserne from '82 - '85 assigned to 1st OPS Battalion - 66th MI, worked on Gablingen as a Czech 98G. Sheridan was an open post then and we were on rotating shifts. When I wasn't on duty I was off post exploring Augsburg and the rest of Germany. Mostly on the trains. Brilliant time to be there - the Deutsche Mark was about 3.40DM to the dollar. I do remember when that Bowling Center went in - I lived in building 156 or 157 - it was the one right across from the center. Made it very easy to roll out of bed to get something to eat without having to trudge over to the mess hall. :-)

My father was stationed there for three years, beginning 1953. I was born in Augsburg in 1954. I traveled back for a visit in 1998. When I got to the base, it was on the last day of closure. The soldiers still there were nice enough to let me walk through the base. It was bittersweet! My parents loved Augsburg. My father had another tour (3 total) in Berlin for 3 years, when the wall was up! (1963-1965).

schnellguy I was stationed in Sheridan Kaserne from 63 to late 65 . I was in company B 24th s&t Batallion and worked as a truck driver. I remember the last chance where I often had my last bier. I also worked the main gate for about 7 months as a security guard. I ate at the consolidated mess hall that served most of the G, I.’s on the Kaserne. Nothing but great memories. I loved Augsburg, remember the cheap drink downtown called,” ratze Putz.? All the alcoholics drank that. Fritz was the German That used to pedal his bicycle around and had a cooler on the back filled with sandwiches. He would yell, “ Baloney ,Salami , ham@.cheese and luncha meat. Most sandwiches were 15 cents. Great memories!

Those buildings were built to last 1000 years! They were beautiful. They left only the ugly Bowling Center standing? What is the real reason why the solid barracks buildings had to go?
