Marie was a great singer and also in line of the swedish melacholy. This song is not only about hope, it is also about how fragile everything can be if you are a sparrow. But - as long as you feel life inside you and your wings carry you, keep on flying over the meadows. As close to religion as most Swedes come to, I guess. For some Swedish gospel, the closest I think we have are some songs from Carola and Cyndee Peters. Both of them with great voices, but perhaps not Swedish classics. Thank´s a lot for the link to the "His Eye is on the Sparrow" - that gave me goosebumps, though I am not religious at all.

Marie Fredriksson was such a gifted singer... she really could belt it out with raw power if she wanted to but she could also sing softly like an angel. You got to say that she had rock, blues and jazz running in her veins. And actually she was one of quite few Swedish celebrities claiming to be Christian believers, though she didn't really want to talk about her faith in interviews. She wasn't very fond of doing interviews at all to be frank. Bit of a reluctant super star, but a force of nature on the stage. Gone all too soon, RIP Marie ❤

Hi there Jonathan, I must say that I really appreciate your reaction-series! You give us a fresh perspective on Swedish classics and many little "fun facts" that I didn't know. Also your reactions shows you're a genuine guy, so keep up the good work! Marie Fredriksson was such a good singer and she really touch our souls especially with her own songs where she was very authentic. Next time you do a song by her maybe you could do "Tro"? Another loved artist that you should check out is Laleh, maybe "Some die young", "Vårens första dag", "Goliat" or "Bara få va mig själv". Laleh has a very special style, she is a one of a kind person and highly creative. She plays a lot with the tones and how she accentuate words. If you want dansband maybe "Du e min man" med Helen Sjöholm could be fun. That song highly irritate me and it would be fun to see your reaction to it. It was liked by many people, not me though. I like gospel, so I will check out the song that you mentioned!

If you are looking for Swedish religious music i suggest Blott En Dag, which is a psalm that's very common at funerals. There's a lot of recordings of it, for exampel by Carola, but the greatest version i think is by Freddie Wadling. I can't listen to it without crying. He is an amazing artist with an intresting history.

So happy you found Marie. Yes, ballads were always her strongest, glad that you are going to do Tro soon. For your next list, let me suggest more Marie Fredriksson classics: the live version of Jag Brande Din Bild Live Cirkus Broadway on KZbin, a 1988 performance that is better than the original recording, and Marie emotes on stage like no other. I don't know if it was a hit on the Swedish charts back then, but as break-up songs go, that one is potent.

Here are some more tips for the reaction-serie. Marie Fredriksson have 2 songs i would recommend. they are from the 80-s and they are "Bästa dagen" and "Den sjunde vågen". Bästa dagen is about how this day will be the best and Den sjunde vågen is a song with feelings getting stronger in a physical moment. Really great song with strong singing from Marie. Flamingokvintetten (Dansband) made a tribute to all mothers with the song "Jag ska måla hela världen lilla mamma". Tomas Ledin is a very popular artist in Sweden. Here are som of his classics: - Snart tystnar musiken. - En del av mitt hjärta. - Just nu. - Sensuella Isabella. - Sommaren är kort. - and many more... Malta - Sommar'n som aldrig säger nej. This song from Eurovision song contest 1973 was very criticized and debated due to one of the lines in the text. 5 weeks in the swedish charts and reached nr 3. Have a nice weekend :)

A few artists to look up songs by that's a bit tricky but also helped shape the Swedish pop landscape is, among others, Maritza Horn - mother of current star Melissa Horn. Not related to Sparvöga in any way, but if you're looking for Swedish classics here are three songs from 80's Melodifestivalen. I'm not really into schlager but growing up in the 80's they played them to death here in Sweden so they do have nostalgic place in my heart. And Melodifestivalen has been and still is a big part of Swedish culture and by extension the Eurovision Song Contest for Europe in general. (Not gonna bother naming ABBA since I assume you have heard them before) Carola Häggkvist - Främling 3rd place ESC in '83 Herreys - Digge loo digge ley 1st place ESC in '84 Lotta Engberg - Fyra Bugg & en Coca Cola. 12th place ESC '87
