The whale meat panic is so strange to me. It's true some large whales are endangered but there are close to 100 different types of whales. Most of them are smaller and are in no danger of extinction. It's like not eating chicken because ostriches are endangered.:) I know , i'm exaggerating a bit here but it's really kind of true.

No, fuck Seaworld. Everyone with a brain knows that wild animals, any wild animals, should be respected and not treated like show-things or playmates. The trainer was much too careless with Tillikum, the whale who killed her. I am sorry she died, but you should never think of a wild animal as your 'friend' and let your guard down and do careless things. You do not know if or when they will revert to acting on instinct. Tillikum just died in January, by the way. Seaworld has at long last stopped the practice of taking whales from the wild and training them to perform.

It only became taboo relatively recently (around 50 years or so) when it was found that the populations of larger whales had almost been exterminated due to overextended hunting. The many whaling nations in the world then agreed to a moratorium, between themselves, to allow the whales to recover and then to take up hunting them again some years later (with quotas and such to make sure that they didn't end up killing them off entirely). But quite soon after the moratorium groups like the SS and other nuts started appearing and convinced people that whales somehow were special.

A whale that lives its whole life in freedom until it gets killed in an instant by modern torpedos that has explosive charges, or livestock that lives their entire lives in conditions that makes Auschwitz look like a summer camp? The hipocrisy is real, and I know what I would have chosen for myself. :)

Here is how I prefer my whale meat: Cut it in large dices. Fry them in butter on high heat, they must not be well done, just seared. Salt and quite a lot of pepper. Put them aside. Deglaze the pan. Then fry some onions, and deglaze the pan again. From the deglaze, make a sauce: Check the flavour, add some cream and 2 minutes before serving, add the meat and onions to the sauce. Serve with a good potato mash, preferably from mandelpoteter. Uhmmmm .... There is nothing wrong with eating whale. I think that what many Americans forget, is that there are many kinds of whale. Only a few are endangered. The minky whale is not. It tastes like game (moose or deer) with a fish tange to it. But do season it well, and do not overcook it, or it will turn out dry and boring. Have a good meal! Now I challenge you to eat rakfisk :D

Most Norwegians (and Japanese I assume) simply consider whales to be really large fish (knowing they are mammals of course). There really is no good logical reason why you can kill and eat one kind of animal but not another (as long as you're not making them go instinct as a result). I do think the US is among the countries considering it the most controversial.
@AMERiNORGE8 жыл бұрын
+zicada I agree to a point. I believe a lot of the controversy over it is from over fishing and that they exhibit higher intelligence than other food providing creatures.
@Dovenpeis8 жыл бұрын
AMERiNORGE, I believe most of the controversy stems from urbanites being completely detached from the reality of nature (I remember once getting a personal and private letter from big city Germans campaigning against whaling, and trying to incite me to rebell against my government over its position on whaling). If whaling was not a cultural thing with long traditions in Norway, I believe the equally detached from the reality of nature Norwegian urbanites would have been right out there with them, protesting whaling. If you do not believe me, just look at the woolf controversy in Norway, which is basically city slicks against country bumpkins.
@zicada76618 жыл бұрын
Well said Dovenpels, I very much agree with this. Yeah the wolf controversy is annoying and for the same reasons. The fact that we grew up knowing about it as a food probably had a huge impact on us. Really though, personally I don't like making distinctions about what we can or can't kill for food (except for humans clearly) :) ) as long as we don't wipe them out in the process. Whether they are slightly more or less intelligent than other things we eat is irrelevant. It's impossible to compare the experiences of different species of animals, and coming up with an arbitrary line seems too.. arbitrary.

I lived in Japan for five years, and they eat it there occasionally. It's maybe something they eat once a year or less. They tend to get very nationalistic about it and will get quite upset if you criticize the practice. I never tried it, since I know the stuff in the stores is only there because they found a loophole in international regulations. Whales are caught under the official purpose of "scientific research" and when said "research" is finished, the carcasses are put up as meat. If someone had offered it to me, I would have probably tried it just to be polite, but I never made it a priority to try it like I did fugu (blowfish). If it's not an endangered or threatened species, I guess I don't have a problem with the practice of eating whale, but it still just feels not right to me even though I understand it's mostly just mental conditioning. A lot of it is because, yes, they are a significantly more intelligent species. Still, my culture (American) does a whole lot of things other cultures disagree with, so I'm in no place to judge or criticize.
@Dovenpeis8 жыл бұрын
None of the whale meat sold in stores are from endangered species, which is one of the reasons why they are so careful to print the name of the species in a very visible position on the packing. Regarding the legality of Whaling, Norway is a sovereign nation that sets its own laws. Although the globalists want the UN to have jurisdiction to impose international laws, and often believe it has, the reality is that there is no such international power. Norway is not bound by the International Whaling Commission, and has made that perfectly clear by objecting to the whole god damn thing. The IWC holds no power over Norway, and Norway issues its own quotas and its own rules. The truth of the mater is that while some of the quotas go to scientific research, mostly for political reasons I believe, most of the Norwegian whaling is actually a commercial business, which Norway emphasised by increasing the quoats both in 2004 and once again in 2006. However, the increased quotas have not resulted in an increased catch, which I believe is due to market limitations by being mostly domestic.
@stephenhackney58168 жыл бұрын
I see this is just as much a point of nationalism in Norway! True, Norway is free to do as it wishes, but I wonder if the objection of basically the rest of the entire world is worth it, especially over something relatively trivial. If it's worth it, then by all means go ahead. Japan definitely gets a lot more heat. Over here in America, there was a popular reality show about a ship that would go out and try to sabotage Japanese whaling operations. The show portrayed them as heroes. The Japanese considered them criminals. Interesting topic to discuss with a Japanese to say the least.

Seal is also delicious, but there are just a few boats going out to hunt these buggers because the cubs have such "teary eyes" and are white and cuddly. in 1986 huge amount of greenland seals invaded the norwegian coast and it killed norwegian coastal fishing in 1986 and 1987 because they ate everything and scared the remaining away. today, 1/4 of the original fisheries are intact. and as some say: there are only a few types of whale that are on the verge of extinction. but the largest threat to whales? pollution. plastic on their blowholes and stomach. overfishing of their species from krill to anchovies, purely to fill the demand of omega 3 and cat food from? u guessed it: people in the cities. so whats in ur vitamin pills? whats in ur fish oil pills? whats in ur catfood? sides: the UN crowned Norway as the happiest and best country to live in. even though we have PC police here and "buhu them whales" as well, we eat whale and we eat seal and we are happy. :) AND slimmer than people in UK and US for some logical reason :D

Nice video! I think the reason that the meat is nearly black is because of the high amount of oxygen. Seals and whales have a lot of myoglobin in their meat that binds nearly 3 times more oxygen than hemoglobin. And they hav more blood than landliving animals. Some whales dives nearly 3000meters deep, so they need alot of oxygen. THANK YOU for showing whats really inside the boks, cause I have always wonderd if its actually beef or just some shredded pieces.

I live in Idaho. I would try it with some A1 steak sauce and cooked more like medium well done. It's not like fish because it's not a fish, it's a mammal like cows, lamb, etc. It probably has a seafood flavoring because of its diet (it eats fish, krill, etc.) It would probably be good with some sauce, spices, potatoes, vegetables, etc.

Personally, I've never eaten whale. From my perspective they are a majestic animal, in par with my pets. Thus asking the question whether to eat them or not would not even cross my mind which is why I don't understand why people eat them. Understandably, when you have no choice, yes perhaps it's a source of high protein, but given that we have so many alternatives, it does begs the question to why.

I'm Creole (from Louisiana - similar to Cajun). I had to laugh at that because that's similar to how I often describe Cajun/Creole food to others. It's delicious - just don't ask what's in it. ;)

Feels like eating dog? It makes sense that it should taste a little like shrimp or lobster since it probably eats a lot of krill being a bard whale. All sea mammals have very dark meat, and I think it it because of the need for effective oxygenizing its muscles for long dives under the surface. Next step for now would be to try seal meat, but it has a much stronger and more peculiar taste than whale.... personally i like salted seal meat best, with rutabega mash, like you use with pinnekjøtt.

Interesting to hear what it taste like, but won't try it myself (since I'm vegetarian). But because it takes 1 hour of torture to kill a whale I hope it gets banned here in Norway too.

It has in fact been scientifically proven that whale meat is one of the most sustainable meats you can eat. You shouldn´t be "ashamed" of eating whale meat - you should be proud. :-)

I've only had whsle meat I think on average like once every 4 years or so, but one of my all time favorite meals was whale steak: back in the 1990s up in Harstad, my uncle served us marinated barbequed whale! AMAZING! *mouth waters every time I think about it*

I love the taste of Whale meat. It's good that they don't throw away the meat after using the fats for oils. That would be a waste.

I love eating red meat - I'm not one of those inland farm folks who feels queasy after only two or three bites of protein. But I think I'd feel guilty about eating an animal that could be smarter than I am and than and most of the folks I know.... ...The recipes can be kind of entertaining, though: In a large skillet, brown one tonne of chopped onions, one quarter tonne of chopped garlic, one chopped whale, and salt and pepper to taste...
