I was about 23 when Morning Dance was first released. I had the album. I haven’t thought about this recording in years. I am now 67 years old, recovering from a recent hip replacement. Thinking about listening to something that will cheer me up in the morning. Morning Dance flashed through my mind. It still works as an inspirational pick me up. Thank you for posting.

The sound of Jay Beckenstein blowing that alto sax is mind blowing on this track, along with Rubins Bassini on congas & percussion, David Samuels on steel drum, an instrument you rarely hear in modern musc, to give it that Carribean flavour, what a brew, there you have it, one of the biggest sellers of 1979 from the Morning Dance album & it wasnt a Disco track either

J Eshun Your comment made me listen to it to the end and you are 100% correct. They played with such ease, never over playing. Jay grew up in my area, but I never knew him before he made it. Whenever I did go see them back in the day, family and friends he gathered with, so I did not interrupt. But he seemed like a nice guy.

In high school in the late 80’s I pulled together a group of fellow musicians and attempted to learn/perform this song for a “solo & ensemble” contest. I spent a month getting down this marimba solo! Then when I pulled everyone together just a couple of weeks before the contest, I found that only half the members had learned their parts! We sounded AWFUL. It was then that I realized “it takes a LOT of work to sound that good.” My hats off to Spyro Gyra for developing this cool jazz sound; they make it sound so effortless. Always my “go to” group when I want to chill.

On this day in 1979 {September 4th} Spyro Gyra were guests on the nationally syndicated weekday-afternoon television program, 'The Mike Douglas Show'... At the time their "Morning Dance"was at position #33 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, two weeks earlier it had peaked at #24 {for 2 weeks} and it spent fifteen weeks on the Top 100... And on July 22nd, 1979 "Morning Dance" peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... The Buffalo, NY band had three other Top 100 records, "Shaker Song" {#99 in 1978}, "Catch The Sun" {#68 in 1980}, and "Cafe Amore" {#77 in 1981}... Band leader and co-founder Jay Beckenstein celebrated his 68th birthday four months ago on May 14th, 2019... Sadly, three members of the band have passed away, bassist Jim Kurzdorfer {1947 - 2011}, drummer Ted Reinhardt {1953 - 2015}, and vibraphone & marimba player David Samuels {1948 - 2019}... May all three R.I.P.
