Do you eventually get your initial settlement money back or do you just forfeit that money forever for monthly payments?

Great question. When you place your settlement funds into a structured settlement annuity, you turn the lump sum amount into a series of future payments. So, yes, you always get at least the amount of money back that you placed into the annuity - but there isn't a final lump sum payment at the end where you "get your settlement money back." You get your settlement money back plus growth from the regular payments you receive. So, quick example: Let's say you receive a $1,000,000 settlement and you place it into an annuity that pays out yearly for 10 years. The annual payments (with 5% growth for this example), would be as follows: - Year 1: $105,000 - Year 2: $105,000 - Year 3: $105,000 - Year 4: $105,000 - Year 5: $105,000 - Year 6: $105,000 - Year 7: $105,000 - Year 8: $105,000 - Year 9: $105,000 - Year 10: $105,000 The total amount that is paid out from the annuity in this example is $1,050,000 - which equals the original amount you place into the annuity ($1,000,000) PLUS the internal rate of return in the annuity ($50,000).
