As far as the music goes I don't see the point of arpegiating notes to make chords on the Amiga version, it just sounds weird when arpegiating sampled instruments. They could have just sampled chords and used them. Yes sure with the Atari ST version you ave no choice, but then arps work better on YM music anyway.

The arpeggio in question isn't really being used for 'chords' (since the interval is whole octaves) - it's being used more like a tremolo effect, just to give the instrument a bit of texture. (Sounds like the ball sound from Arkanoid.) I'm not a fan of this tune, but I don't find this arpeggio effect objectionable at all.

Back in the day, I used to make a lot of Amiga music, but I've come to really hate the Amiga's sound hardware - it just sounds so dirty, and the 'stereo' is irritating. I've now gone back to preferring my 'first love', the ZX Spectrum, with its clean-sounding chip music and cheerful colours. So I would say that the ST is my favourite music here - except that something is really 'up' with this music. It sounds horribly filtered. What is going on? Did the Atari ST have some kind of filter, or is it just the recording?

the zx spectrum was quite a superior audio outport in comparrison to what lse was around. I feel the Amiga had all the graphics but the Atarti ST lead the way in terms of sound attributes. Not to lead astray everyone thinking Amiga 500 was better because everything sounded like it was coming from a Saxaphone.!

lol was there any difference at all apart from the music? I stopped watching after a few minutes. A direct port surely? I like the ST music in this one but I hate low pass filters at low bitrates! ;P

I was just going to comment on the filtering… what is going on here? I grew up with a Spectrum, and love the AY chip. But this sounds horrible here. Did the Atari ST filter the sound or something? I find it almost impossible to listen to this, the sound is so muddy.

@@Scripture-Man It's a matter of preference. Some people don't like the muddy sound (you and I) and some prefer to remove the sharpness. The ST didn't employ filtering but most of us will be most used to hearing it through old TV speakers if you can imagine that. AY/YM sound can be processed in stereo but for some reason the ST has to be modded for that whereas the 8-bit machines that could implement this type of sound (most of them, I think?) do output to two separate channels. Emulators usually can do stereo and so can music players such as AY Emulator, which incidentally has Dizzy skins! Personally I prefer Micro ST also by Sergey Bulba. Both can be downloaded at his website at bulba.untergrund.net

That's a matter of opinion. I don't like the Amiga's sound hardware and prefer the AY chip :-) Though for some reason the Atari ST music here sounds really horrible, like it's been filtered. Not sure why.

@@Scripture-Man ah??? have you not heard Amiga sound on Super frog, Alien Breed, all the Lemmings games, Settlers, Flashback, Speed ball 2????? Amiga sounds utterly amazing!

The games are virtually identical. I don't like the music in either machine but maybe paula is a bit better to the YM but honestly I would have just played the radio or something. The only difference I can find is that the "scrolling" on the Amiga seems somewhat smoother but it is a scrolling method I really dislike, I prefer bad scrolling or flip screen to that. Anyway, I was never a fan of the Dizzy games, the only one I like is Bubble Dizzy.

It's not that it's bad game. It was programmed for the lowest common denominator (ST in this case) and it had a minimal port. I don't have a problem with this as a good game is a good game, but it certainly doesn't make this a good Amiga port just passable.

These are literal carbon copies, except for amigas superior sound. They even have copied ST's choppy scrolling on amiga. Lazy and uneccessary.

Yes, very hit and miss.. :D In this case they published the game, Andrew Green coded both versions.

I wasn't aware Codemasters were infamous for bad programming! I always thought they were top of their game - on the Spectrum at least.
