I haven't seen that Network Music logo in years. Worked in a small tv studio that had the whole library on CD, only then I realized that was what the Weather Network was using for their music (early/mid 90's and for quite some time afterwards) - and yes, this very song was used for forecasts too.. reminds me of cold winter days checking the weather before everything was on your phone.

The original weather channel music was done by Trammel Starks, a 3-CD set called Music for Local Forecasts that IIRC came with the Weatherstar machines. It's available online if you look in the right places. My son has one of the tracks as his ringtone and nearly everyone says "Hey that sounds familiar.."

I like having it play stations based on songs and seeing what familiar stuff I find. Then it’s a series of Google searches to find where I remember songs from.

Back when the Internet was still the Wild West, I found some interesting uploads, like one that was from the agency that made some Atari ads but couldn’t recognize anything from it. These apparently were made for internal use, just in case they needed to re-record something or use it for something else, like local ads. it seems they weren’t even made for archiving purposes.

They've been publishing these tracks to KZbin to get them into the content match system so they can enforce copyrights or monetize videos that use the songs. Previously, they had to rely upon producers being honest and paying for needle drops. The new era of online videos largely didn't follow those rules but got away with it because these songs were generally not in the content databases. So there's an effort to fix that now.

I am not from the US so I had no chance of watching it live but I have discovered Computer Chronicles late, maybe 10-15 years ago? It was instant love for me. It have this positive energy that is almost gone from the world by now. And this tune is so nostalgic for me even if I wasn't there originally when the show aired. Thank you Sir! 🤘

There was so much amazing instrumental music written and recorded that has unfortunately been lost and forgotten. From synth to muzak, these deliciously retro tracks are one of the best ways to disconnect from the modern world and put yourself in the mindscape of a different time and place. Good music can bring you to a different world.

I've listened to a fair number of library tracks (especially sonoton, where I even mimicked the album/single covers for my own work). The "other arrangement" you hear isn't really another arrangement and is quite common on library compilations; many instruments are simply removed so that you can continue the song without the bombastic hooks interfering with a presenter's speech. You synchronise the tracks and then fade or jump between them in post if I recall correctly so you can keep the song going whilst keeping the speaker legible. Perfect example I can think of off the top of my head is the Hay's Travel theme.

I love finding out where stuff like this comes from! My grandpa was a doctor and would get promotional casette tapes from pharmacutical and mecial device companies. I discovered them when I was working in the production studio of my college radio station. So commercial musical intros, outros and whips would pop up regularly on those commercial tapes. I would record them to half-inch loop carts and get them all cued up like Laurie Anderson. I'm so happy I got to experience this all before digital

That's a great find, Clint. About 20 or more years ago, I was lucky enough to buy 12 to 15 Network records from a Canadian eBay seller as a single bulk lot (which worked out to maybe $3 to $5 per record) and one of the volumes had an exciting intro theme as heard during the 80's on the Super Channel network before a movie would premiere on TV. That record had other variations of the same theme. All of the records I bought were pristine and whisper-quiet with no snaps, crackles, or pops. :)

I watched your Christmas episode like 4 times just because it was simultaneously calming and fascinating and then fumbled around with random Computer Chronicles episodes since you ran that. Great stuff to put on to unwind. That Computer Chronicles After Hours with a glass of scotch bit killed me. I was picturing a belligerently drunk Stuart Cheifet after a particularly weak episode saying "all these laptops suck and will be obsolete by the next episode, next to some random sales rep who was hanging out with Kildall at their secret CC cocktail lounge.

I've watched every episode of Computer Chronicles, most of them multiple times. But I'm still hoping you are going to do some more videos featuring it. Maybe a video that just features some highlights from the Random Access File to track the computer news over the years. Or maybe some of the predictions that were made and how close or far they ended up being from what really happened.

The world of stock music is an interesting one. There's a lot of stuff in the UK under the KPM, Bruton, and Music House, just to name a few, which I'm sure has songs that travelled across the pond to shows in the states. Do check out Bardoni and Warr's many albums too - they actually coined the term 'music bed'!

But I also was able to find that the other memorable music they used for theme and interstitial music in the show was from the KPM series of library music, by someone named Graham de Wilde, so perhaps that one's a bit more obscure haha.

Around 1999-2000, when I was a sophomore in high school helping out in the AV department, they had a set of records from "The Aircraft Music Collection". Nearly all of the albums had about half a dozen tracks, with multiple different length cuts for each one, just like the album you showed here. I took nearly all of the records home and digitized the longest cuts of almost all the tracks. I still have the MP3s.

I loved CC back in the day. I wish there was a hardware-focused show like that today. Of course, we have it even better today with the plethora of tech tube, but you always tuned into CC because it was one of the few places you could get any computer news.

If you've ever seen the Xerox Star intro film, it has a very catchy tune when they're doing the comparison with the "manual way" vs. the Xerox software. The name of the track is "Handmade by Robots". Makes for good driving music :)

Speaking of "the song is longer than the intro", long-running UK police drama/soap "The Bill" used Overkill by Andy Pask and Charlie Morgan. Everyone knows the first part they use for the show, but then it goes into a synth vortex which was almost never played.

Check out "Energy" by the same company, off album 006 "Corporate Class." I swear I've heard it dozens of times in various corporate promos, ads, and commercials in the 80's and 90's. The newer theme is from OmniMedia (Zenith I think?) and that album is great, too. Sounds right off of your MIDI mountain :)

Production music is a whole genre of music that's largely overlooked, and yet, some of it is probably some of the widest known via television, as a lot of it is used as either theme tunes to shows, or is used as incidental music. It's a particular hobby of mine to collect this stuff. Electronica being one of the sub-genres. If anyone's interested they could always visit the Library Music Themes forum and discover a whole new world of music. This particular album is from 1983 and is composed by Craig Palmer.

It's fun getting to listen to full versions of TV themes, particularly the ones that get stuck in our minds for decades, for me it's Blockbusters theme (UK version, theme was called "Quiz Wizard", composed by Ed Welch), when done right, music really sticks with us, even if it's just for a TV show... :)

The theme for "U.F.O." or "Joe 90" are late 60's classics. "Secret Agent Man" by Johnny Rivers. Then there's "Tank" by The Seatbelts (from 'Cowboy Bebop'). Heck, I think at least 2/3 of any GARNiDELiA album is theme songs.

My favourite, from the same people and same time period was Bits and Bytes and the music for it when it ended. I absolutely loved that the most! And of course, they were Canadian programs available via antennae on UHF TV Ontario at the time, and I am Canadian.

I have a bunch of early Production CD (80's & early 90's) from different European studios + i have a couple other ones i found in the wild. I don't have much Production LP in my collection (because of being too worn out in general). They're a genuine way to have those beeps & blerbs that we often hear on the wild but never thought it were specific tools. Usually the tracks does pre-edit for a 60, 30 & 15 seconds lenght (for Adverts, TV idents, etc).
