Delighted to be a part of this video Neil so very grateful for you chatting to me! So, let's just recline into something I feel is missed that Neil rightly feels at the end of this video. Is your 1992 Amiga meant to be your 2020 PC? No. Is it meant to be so fast you can open a JPEG in seconds, I'd argue, no. What it's meant to be is a portal to your younger self, a time of naivety , joy and just sheer fun. I honestly feel the Amiga 600 with no too much money spent on it is your portal. It's 68000 may seem slow to start with, but spend time with it and you'l be charmed. It can do so much. For me, it's being able to sit back and see it beam back to me my memories of the past, feel warm, but also critically know, it is making new memories that keep the present relevant. The Amiga 600 is in my book, the best Amiga you can own in 2020 for not a great deal of your spondulix,

I thought he'd already moved and just done a great job making the cave look the same. 😂, Now I'm really looking forward to seeing the new cave. I started with an Amiga 2000, I bought my little sisters an Amiga 600 at a Commodore Amiga show in Melbourne, it must have been around 1993 for I think $699 AU... For a 14 and 10 year old girls they loved it, especially James Pond. I eventually moved to an Amiga 4000/030 later updated with a Cyberstorm accelerator with the 060/PPC 604E? (I 🤔 think and which cost more than the Amiga 4000), a Cybervision 64 graphic card...... AAAAAAND, embarrassingly a genuine EMPLANT card that cost $999 AU and wasn't even as good as SHAPESHIFTER 😂... And all I did was play games... I gave it all to a friend who never appreciated it, but I'd trade it all in to be back in 1984 with my first computer... My beloved Amstrad CPC 464 with GREEN SCREEN when everything was new and EXCITING.... Who doesn't miss those days.

Half the fun of that game was going in blind and trying out the various locations. Like the wizard's tower top right that was seemingly completely random in how the wizard would react to your visit (far too often just turning you into a toad and thus costing you a life). I think i may have faced the dragon once, and was woefully unprepared for what i was up against.

I came late to the Amiga party as when I was young could never justify the cost of an Amiga and went with the cheaper Atari 520 STFM but always wanted an Amiga. Now that I have a 500, 600 and 1200 I think the 1200 is the best as it has the advantages you identified with the 600 in having PCMCIA and an IDE port which means you can run your games from the hard drive and do away with problematic floppy disks. Also the PCMCIA makes it easy to transfer files to and from the PC which is so much better. If however you don't have a lot of room the A600 is a great space saver. Great video series Neil and looking forward to seeing the move to the new RMC headquarters!

I love my Amiga 600s. I don't understand the hate. Okay, no numpad. So what. If you are using production apps requiring it, you should be using a 2000 or better anyway. 1MB chip, 2.0 WB, IDE bus, PCMCIA slot. It's a little beast.

Hi. I think an A600 would be a better setup for me than reviving the A500 from my 20th. ECS chipset, 2MB chip ram, affortable storage with SD Cards, a small occupation on my desk, and because I'm French, a scart connector on my TV set for a perfect RGB picture. Now you've got one A600 and a cure, would you show some games enhancements with ECS chipset over OCS ?

With BestWB installed on Kickstart 3.1.4, the PCMCIA slot doesn't conflict with my 8MB RAM; I think it's the driver in BestWB that fixes that. Also, you can get a usb keyboard adapter on ebay that clips over the keyboard controller chip; this works well with a USB numeric keypad to provide the keys you need for flight simulators and such, and it doesn't interfere with the built-in keyboard, so you can get by with just the keypad plugged in when you need it.

I'd really appreciate if you, when you and if you will do an episode of the Atari ST, beyond comparing it with the Amiga in its multimedia capabilities (where the Amiga 100% is far better) also compare it with the Macintosh and with the PC at that time. The ST seems to be a two-faced machines to me. On the one hand, it is the successor of the 8Bit-Mainly-Games-Machines and thereby a competitor of the Amiga and where it kind of sucks. That is what is was characterized in the UK. Here in Germany, on the other hand, it was rather an office and programming machine, mostly sold with its great monochrome monitor, in many aspects similar to a Macintosh but far better equipped while costing far less. You can clearly see this different characterisation in this german Commercial (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6jHq6p8a5psrKs) which refers to "in professional use, in science and technology, as text and information system in modern offices, for demanding tasks in the private area". Needless to say, it was very popular with musicians because of it MIDI interface and respecting software like Cubase. Coming to games. If it needs a proof that good looking games in high-res monochrome graphics were possible, have a look at Oxyd (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIq9lmmqYsydqbc)

Amiga 600 is a terrible computer. ECS wasn't good enough of an improvement in 1992. Had I been a Commodore exec at the time, I would've put in a 68010 at least to make it a worthwhile upgrade. Also the form factor, with its missing numeric keypad, was a foul pile of excrement.

the Amiga 600, a far more convenient machine than the A500... but at what cost? an A500 can still be picked up for 50£ (and less if lucky) but with no extra's though and mostly more brown than tobacco... while an working A600 is close to if not higher than A1200. here in Norway an working A600 will set you back a minimum 200£ if your lucky to find one for sale... there is also more available hardware for the A500 though some might be equally as expensive as all other Amiga systems. but that PCMCIA support and no need for the 520 though... vs 150£ more in upgrades on an A500, or going right for an A1200...

I took my boxed A600 out to have a look and see if it was working three or four years ago now and it seemed to work fine. But Neil's recapping advice has got me worried. As I've not got the RMC recapping skills are there and businesses that do this sort of work?
@DavePoo
@DavePoo 3 жыл бұрын
I have 2 which i have recapped and they did both worked fine before the recap. So the caps "can" last this long (~30 years) and still work, but they are well past their expected life at this point. If they do start the fail they will leak electrolyte and that can corrode the board, so at this point in time (2020) it's better to replace them even if the Amiga is working perfectly. Also to note is that depending on what caps fail, you might not notice, so some only drive the RF modulator, some are only for the sound etc So a quick boot test might not even be good enough to tell you that they haven't failed and are leaking. I'm in the UK and they are places that will recap for you for less than the cost of the equipment you might need to do it yourself. If you only have 1 Amiga and you don't have the tools needed to do it yourself then it is the cheaper than buying the equipment.

Exactly my thoughts. A nice toggle switch around the back of the machine. Some WHDLoad games need more than the 4-ish Mb. I can’t do that as I have an original expansion, so the only way of switching to 8Mb is to swap the SIMM 😂

The PCMCIA socket and RAM over 4mb issue exists on the A1200, too. When I installed Doom, I first had to remove the fast RAM to use my CD-drive(basically a discman plugged into a SCSI adapter, which was then plugged into a Squirrel in the PCMCIA), copy the .wad into the Doom directory, turn off the machine, put the fast RAM back in, remove the CD-ROM then boot the machine to play Doom. Annoying part was, Doom was the only game I had that needed more than 4mb fast RAM, so I ended up just leaving the 4mb SIMM in unless I specifically was playing Doom, as a lot of my software and games were on CD.

Glad you’ve seen sense! However, I know what you mean about it historically, it’s the poster child for everything wrong with 90s commodore. For the modern day? The footprint, modern upgrades and even eBay prices means for gamers, it’s probably the one Amiga to own. Obviously we all need a couple, along with 2 500s, a couple of 1200s, be constantly searching for a big box Amiga, and hope to fall over a 1000 in a deceased relatives attic.

Transfer Rate for PCMCIA Ethernet on a A600 using AS225: NFS: 400kByte/s FTP: 250kByte/s smbclient: 80kByte/s rsync/scp: 15kByte/s I'd say NFS is pretty useable and can partially replace a local hard disk. Only problem: NFS=No File Security and is pretty out of date nowadays and you have to manually force an older NFSv1 or v2 otherwise the amiga wont cooperate. Linux still comes with full NFS support but is a bit tricky. Windows is actually a bit easier to setup as an NFS server, you just have to install NFS Server Support and then you get a setup dialog rather similiar to conventional SMB support.

Yeah for the time it was perhaps not seen as enough to warrant a +100 on the name, but as you demonstrate the changes that were done made it more future proof. Also, Moonstone, now that's a game i have not thought about in ages. I recall the opening kinda freaked me back in the day but the gameplay was engrossing if flagrantly gore filled. The combat also suffered from much the same complaint as with Body Blows, in that it relied on a single button and stick movements to do everything. So you kinda had to be tactical rather than rely on reflexes.

Worst thing about the A600 is how the case clips break so easily. I have fitted enhanced ones to my machine now to make it more robust. Best thing is the form factor. Great backpack machine for visiting demoparties (imagine GOING to a demo party in the current global situation) when you are working on a project that doesn't require AGA.

Body Blows was on DOS too and I thought it played alright, it's a good example of why Commodore needed to launch the Amiga with a new controller, the stock joystick pinout supports at least two buttons like the SMS and 7800, that BB could have at least had Punch & Kick as separate buttons. Really somebody needed to push this aspect in hindsight Re. one-button controllers in an age that was up to six buttons, that's beyond outdated. It's weird to think the NES used multiplexing chips in it's gamepads by 1983 but so many platforms never did. O_o???

I spend hundred of hours with an Amiga 600.. Loved it. I remember buying a harddrive for it, but never got it to work. (The Kickstart in the machine didn't support it i guess) Great video, and im happy that you actually found out, that the A600 is a little gem.

I gotta say, I may be in a minority of 1, but I don't hate Body Blows. Sure a SNES or Megadrive with a multi button pad could put our a great conversion of SF2, but the Amiga usually only supports one button sticks. I feel Body Blows plays pretty good given the limitations of the controller. And it does look nice, too.

I wish I'd seen that PCMCIA->SD usage a couple of weeks ago, as I would have mentioned it in an article I just wrote! As someone who doesn't actually own an Amiga, but has always wanted one, that PCMCIA slot is now too hard to ignore. It may not have been a good idea at the time, but it was the perfect expansion for the future of the machine. You may not like it, but I'd actually buy a 600 these days over other models!

Funny thing, back in the day, I would have got an A600 if I could have afforded it. Because of hard drive option (be more like PC) and PCMCIA (transfer stuff easier to PCs, although how exactly that would have actually been done at the time I have no clue). I do think it was released at a bad time, though, and it was harrowing to see Commodore die soon afterwards.

I'm pretty sure I've had the Chaos Engine crash on me before though it was a "naughty" version if you catch my drift. Perhaps it was just an unstable game.

Now U nedd to be cured more than before! :D An ACA500 expansion mounted on the side slot of your A500 and you were ready to go with very less money and no work at all. Also, an A500 with ACA500 offers many more options of a this way expanded A600 and the A500 caps are yet invincible! ;)

Who remembers the "on the ball" football manager? Spend evenings and night with friends on this game i liked the a1200 version wich had more colors. Also alien breed 3 was a great experience. My personal favorites. Also made alot of hardcore house music with Octamed.

Great video. Saw flashback box. One of my all time fav games. But no matter how many times I buy it on diff systems. Such as pc. Switch. Etc. The megadrive is still my preferred choice to play it on

I've never owned an Amiga (always been in the ST camp) but I've often thought of picking up a 600. I kind of like the more compact look of it.

Oh man the memories, I learned my trade on Deluxe Paint. Transferring those skills to Page maker and Aldus Freehand on the early Macs before moving over to Photoshop and Illustrator later on. I have a lot to thank that machine for,

That’s a great CRT. We had that same Sony set as the second tv downstairs back in the day at my parents. My Dad wouldn’t let me play games on it though. I had to make do with a white Ferguson tv with 8 channels on the side & no remote. Occasionally I had to give it a bash Onslo style to get the picture straight. It had character, I think that’s what you call it.

The Amiga 600. My most hated Amiga model. My opinion will never change about the Amiga 600 no matter what upgrades i was to do to it as there are a lot of Demo's and games that just dont work with this model.
