I hate when KZbin deletes my post. Again: Thank you very much for this, I never had the CD-32 and am amazed how well it runs. The start animation from James Sachs to this day looks great. I strongly recommend looking into his screen saver Serene Screen, it still runs on my daily use PC.

Yes I see more than a few comments that I get to see the preview of that seem perfectly on topic and fine to me, then I click, and it says it’s “removed.” ??? Ugh!

Cool, I have a very similar CD32 setup with the TF 030 and I also love Gunship 2000. On an unaccelerated Amiga its too slow, but on 030 it really shines.

Absolutely!

I love my CD32. I've actually come been given another one, which I keep thinking of popping a TerribleFire into... Gunship 2000 is superbly done, a really good conversion to console hardware - the controls work quite nicely off the CD32 control pad.

I actually played more off camera and the gamepad controls really are handled well!

I made a 250.MB Scala MM demo on my CD32 in 1996.

I played Gunship 2000 for weeks and weeks

I played the original Gunship on C64 so often over a 2year period the floppy disk started to come apart from wear.

The cdrom is 2x speed and has a 16bit CDDA audio channel that mixes with the Paula audio. It was the CDTV that featured a single speed scsi type cdrom without a 16 bit separate audio channel. That system output cdda at an 8 bit overaampled rate.

Thank you for the correction! My Mad Cow is getting worse.

@@HoldandModify its all good. I drooled over CD32 specs before getting it. I had the FMV cart and used to play my Hong kong action movie VCDs on it. CHINA never got VHS they went straight to VCD.

Clear RAM is a utility to clear your RAM Drive to help provide more memory. Not really necessary unless you have not much RAM available in the first place. You seem to be running one of the old Magic Workbench installs which will have a base install with some extras. If you are using a 030/040 or 060 accelerator, you really need to install THORs MMULIBs to get the correct libraries installed 👍🏻

Ah cool. Thanks for the info! I’m using it mostly for quick pick up and play gaming. I have other Amigas for heavy lifting. As seen in my other vids. :)

I've just ordered tf330 for my CD32. Was hunting for A1200 at a decent price for a very long time... but now I just give up on it. Prices just getting insane for this hobby. Have A500,A600, and now CD32/TF330 (that will work as A1200).
@HoldandModify2 жыл бұрын
The CD32 is probably the best bang for buck option out there for “real” Amiga fun. Especially with the TF330. Because, yup, you get an a1200 as well. Two for one! It’s the only machine of all mine that I play games on. Since it’s so clean, easy, and easy to move around.

Cd32 should've been marketed a home living room A1200 computer instead of a gaming console.

last lines, or something like a pi?
@HoldandModify2 жыл бұрын
Ah ha! Yes very true. A Pi and PiMiga setup would be even more entertaining. As I’ve said many times before. Just didn’t fall in to the “original hardware” rant I was making. :)

In modern emulation what'd be the implication of this, vis-a-vis the upcoming A500 Mini? Could one run CD32 games by sideloading them unto it?
@HoldandModify2 жыл бұрын
The experts would need to chime in. The emulation software on the Mini would need CD32 support. Meaning it’s custom firmware, chips, and of course reading CD images.
@amipal242 жыл бұрын
You should be able to sideload the CD32 version to play on the A500 Mini, but it won't have any of the CDDA audio.

Yes,1200 plus CD and chip Akiko useless. 😁😉
@cullmaster73612 жыл бұрын
Akiko chip was a all in one solution of the custom chipset found on the A1200. Akiko is actually faster and can be utilised better for the Doom ports.
@ZeusBike3332 жыл бұрын
The Akiko was far from useless in the CD32 it was actually essential and did far more than just cheap planar to chunky conversion. Wikipedia write on the Akiko: "Akiko is the CD32's all-purpose 'glue' chip and forms part of the AGA chipset used in that system. Akiko is responsible for implementing system glue logic that in previous Amiga models were found in the discrete chips Budgie, Gayle and the two CIAs. In detail, it includes control logic for the CD32's CD-ROM controller, system timers, the two game ports, the serial ('AUX') port, and the chip memory soldered onto the motherboard.[1] It controls a one kilobyte EEPROM for saving data such as highscores etc. Additionally, the Akiko chip is able to perform simple 'chunky' to 'planar' graphics conversion in hardware. The Amiga's native display is a planar display which is simple and efficient to manipulate for routines like scrolling. However, chunky displays are faster and more efficient for 3D graphics manipulation. Akiko allows this conversion to be performed in hardware instead of relying on software conversion which would cause more overhead. The conversion works by writing 32 8-bit chunky pixels to Akiko's registers and reading back eight 32-bit words of converted planar data which can then be copied to the display buffer"

Whoa. That’s some great info! Thank you! I never knew any of this.

The Akiko chip was a very interesting chip that I'd loved to have in my A-4000!
@uberdude25552 жыл бұрын
The Akiko chip is very cool, chunky conversion stuff aside it did a whole lot of other stuff re-implementing other custom chips found in the A1200, I'm not sure if it's true or not but someone mentioned in the forums recently that it also implemented missing stuff like floppy support etc but Commodore never bothered to connect up those pins. What's also really cool is when Phase 5 / DCE made the SX32 Pro expansion they used the Akiko chip as a DMA controller for it's onboard IDE, as far as I know this is the only Amiga that implemented DMA on IDE, don't even think the terrible fire expansion cards etc can do DMA today.
