Roadkill was actually a fav of myne on amiga, it had smooth animations and nice music

Xtreme Racing is interesting it has Mode 7 type graphics, as Street Racer was also released on the Amiga, but they ended up using a traditional racing game type rngine, like the Mega Drive version did.

Yeah, that is interesting!

Some of those games were quite impressive: Xtreme Racing, Roadkill, Black Viper, Virtual Karting, Leading Lap MPV, F17 Challenge and Virtual GP (that one really surprised me). Since the computer was not very popular where I live (I never even saw one in action when I was a kid), I was unaware the Amiga was capable of some of the graphics you show in these videos. Another great entry in the series. Happy New Year, Pete, and thank you very much for the videos you released this year.

Amazing what the Amiga could do, and such a variety of styles here. Happy New Year!

Great video! Roadkill was an excellent racer. The voice samples really added to the excitement. Surprised to hear it only had four tracks, I seem to remember more. Maybe they were reversed. Although it wasn't well reviewed, I really enjoyed ATR also. Some games here I've never played, I'll be sure to check them out!
@onaretrotip Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, the voice samples really add some spice to the game, don't they. The manual states it has four circuits, but doesn't mention whether they are also played in reverse.

Max Rally actually looks pretty good, and if that had come out 5 or 6 years earlier it would surely have gotten the recognition it seems to deserve. At the time when I saw it in magazines (never got to play a demo, unfortunately) I was put off by the car sprites, which don't look very exciting, and I wrote it off as probably another amateurish effort that wasn't worth bothering with. Appraising the visuals now I can recognise that the graphics are rather smart looking, and things like the pace of the car and view distance seem to be pretty much spot on. The moving platforms add a bit of variation to the gameplay and I bet they would have made for some very fun and frustrating two player sessions. I was a satisfied owner of Xtreme Racing and Roadkill. I didn't play Xtreme Racing at its highest resolution, but with only a bit of Fast Ram added an A1200 was considerably faster and we had either 2mb or 4mb of Fast RAM, so I enjoyed it. Roadkill had those excellent voice samples, coupled with the weapons and other pick ups they made it very fun, but the paucity of different tracks, the restriction to right angled turns and most of all the lack of a two player mode were a bit disappointing. Overall though I would rate Roadkill as at least a 75% game, Xtreme Racing about 80%.

Good vid Pete, had limited experience with Amiga, some crazy differences in quality with these games.

Thanks, Scott. Yes, some wildly varying levels of quality here.

The reason that they were exclusive to the Amiga was either because they came quite late in the day (e.g. Roadkill and Xtreme Racing were both 1995 releases I think) and so didn't get much attention because they weren't technically cutting edge and the Amiga was a forgotten computer, or alternatively because they were of very poor quality. Most of the very poor games, like Flying High, came later in the Amiga's lifetime when only amateurs were releasing games on the Amiga and of course most of these amateurs had limited talent.

Wow. That was a great selection of racing games. I never had an Amiga as a kid, I had a Amstrad cpc Plus. I didn't know that the Amiga had such a wide variety of racing games. The video covers 3 generations of games. You have 8-bit top-down racers, then you have Snes style racers and at the end there are basically 486/Pentium style 3D PC games. I liked Extreme Racing, Roadkill, Bump n' Burn and Prime Mover the most. I like that vibrant Snes style colour palette. Bump n' Burn just needed a speed increase, a drift mechanic, tyre smoke and a higher chase camera view. The graphics are really good.

I seem to remember the tech demo running decently on our A1200, which only had Fast RAM in the trapdoor (either 2MB or 4MB of Fast RAM). It was probably a little bit jerky but not much, I was impressed with it. I wasn't aware that it had actually been released in the end.

VirtualGP does what no other Amiga 3D game does: it runs smoothly in 320x512 (!) pixels resolution. i play it frequently on my A1200/68040@40MHz. Author Paolo Cattani a hero, genius. :-)

Really starting to get into the Amiga now thanks Pete, briefly a friend back in infant/primary school had a Amiga 500 but I never owned/had the system to appreciate its value. Having saying that however, I can’t help but admire just how many vast quality games there truly are on such a system. Thanks for the recommendation on these racing games! 😎👌🏼

Super Cars 2, Test Drive and Buggy Boy are racing games I played on the Amgia most. But I think none of them are exclusives. I heard a lot of good things from Lotus series and Skidmark too. Never heard of Max Rally. Looks really good and I will try it out today on my Steam Deck with RetroArch. 🙂Great compilation in this video.

I was a big fan of Super Cars 2, very fun in multiplayer in particular and I was a fan of the graphics and track design. Lotus was good, more so in the second and third iterations than the first. They were very fast and smooth, fairly simple but smart looking graphics with some nice effects from wind and snow etc, and the sound effects and music were fantastic. Skidmarks was great too, a really nice surprise when I came across that on a coverdisk, so much so that I bought it and the sequel Super Skidmarks.

Roadkill looks great, will have to hoover up the cd32 version Totally agree about your thoughts on atr. Was disappointed with bump n burn. Mpv, not a clue sorry 🤣. Enjoyed f17 challenge. Some dreadful looking games, unfortunately they were often trying to make the amiga do things it was unable to do towards the end.
@danyoutube7491 Жыл бұрын
Yep, trying to make the Amiga do things it wasn't really designed to do, and moreover I think the people left trying out these things were unfortunately rather inexperienced (Flying High being a prime example, which got panned in the magazines even at a time when they were usually far too generous to new releases). But the F1 effort looked good to me, even if it was never a fully fleshed out game that I am aware of.
