Developer Spotlight - BULLFROG

The fourth episode in my Developer Spotlight series, this time looking at the history and games of Bullfrog Productions. Another Amiga era developer of which I'm very fond.
*I mention in the video that the EA/gog.com deal was 2001, but was 2011. My script says 2011 so I guess I misspoke.

I played all three Sim Theme Parks, both Syndicates (but not the expansion), Theme Hospital, and Dungeon Keeper 2. All awesome games. After a certain point I knew the Bullfrog logo meant quality game.

You should give Dungeon Keeper a go, it's their masterpiece IMO. I also prefer Syndicate Wars to Syndicate, but that's probably because I played SW first and Syndicate second.

Yeah, I really should try Dungeon Keeper, it looks great. I never got on as well with Syndicate Wars, but I did play Syndicate first. It's one of the greatest games of all-time for me, and I still play it a lot today.

I glad that the ex-Bullfrog devs formed new gaming studios. The names of the studios as of 2018 are 22Cans you mentioned, 5Lives Studios who did Satellite Reign game you mentioned as well, and of course Two-Point Studios. I hope this info help and if you ever want to play Bullfrog style games keep an eye out those studio game releases like Two-Point Hospital. :)

Another great one! Really enjoyed it! I remember first finding out about their catalog when PC Gamer ran a giant cover story on them back in 1995 or so, with the cover being a Superman motif of a frog changing out of a suit into a costume. I'll say this, as someone who had a PC that could run the Hi-Octane demo but had a PlayStation without the money to buy Wipeout, Hi-Octane was great! I played the hell out of it. That and FX Fighter were the two most console-like games I recall from back then. I've never been able to get into those business sim games, though, like Theme Hospital and Themepark. Magic Carpet and Syndicate got a lot of play back then, too. Magic Carpet is probably one of the top five games that genuinely blew me away with its mechanics. I couldn't believe I was creating volcanoes and guard towers left and right.

Thanks, Calvin! Glad you enjoyed it. I never played Hi-Octane back in the day, but have in recent years on Saturn. Great game. I loved the business sims as well, I played Theme Park to death. Magic Carpet blew me away too, I loved that game, and played it a lot. Syndicate is by far my favourite, and my most played of their games. I still play that today, and it's still as enjoyable and challenging as ever. It's one of my all-time favourite games.

Theme Park and Hospital are classics indeed. I have never heard of Theme Aquarium either. Interesting... I used to play Dungeon Keeper although think it was the demo I repeatedly played haha but I enjoyed it :) Populous the beginning, I tried the demo but I didn't really know what I was doing. Thanks, Oliver! Loved Syndicate, that's probably my favourite Amiga game (up there with the Monkey Islands). I love doing this series, but they just take so bloody long (40-50 hours), so I can't do them often. Been working on a Psygnosis one for a while now.

You literally just gave a complete rundown of my teenage years! lol Bullfrog and Psygnonsis where by far the only companies worth spending cash on. I agree with your thoughts on Syndicate, the original gameplay was fasntastic, but I was always frustrated with not being able to rotate the screen, only to find that something would happen behind a building that would kill me :( The other thing I really like about your videos is that they really highlight how significant the Amiga was to the computer world, even though it is constantly left out of most documentaries as they focus souly on Apple vs Windows (PC). Keep up the good work!

This is awesome, thanks for the upload 👌🏻 I actually have Syndicate on the PSP as part of the EA Replay compilation. It's abysmal on PSP. It's nowhere near as good as playing on computer back in the day. I recently bought it on GOG and it's exactly how I remembered it.

Bullfrog was allways brilliant. I played almost all of its games, and yes, I love Syndicate, a masterpiece just like Powermonger, Magic Carpet I and II, Theme Hospital, and... I like very specially Dungeon Keeper, not just for the gameplay, the graphics etc, but because at its time it was also a masterpiece in response to a blockbuster, Diablo; it's Diablo's mock-up reversal: you want random labyrynths, so build them yourself, but this time for the bad guy's side. Just great.

Dungeon Keeper II is one if the best strategy game i've ever play. AI still far ahead from many other well known games. I was waiting for DK-III and still sad it never came.

"Top Ten Mac Pack" had me playing Syndicate and Theme Park in the late 90's. Bullfrog was second only to Blizzard in making games available to the tiny share of Mac users, God bless them. Syndicate is one of the all-time greats!

Played Syndicate Wars, the Dungeon keepers, Theme Hospital and the Theme Parks my favourite being the first Dungeon Keeper, WHAT A GAME! They should have made a third one focussing more on gameplay and less on graphics. That for me was the problem with number 2 that the gameplay (or creatures) were pretty similar, just better graphics (with 3dfx Voodoo graphics support). My second favourite game was Syndicate Wars, amazing game and science fiction. It felt like that game was just the beginning and that it could have gone further (who remembers how cool the opening video was?). Third is Theme Hospital, everyone loves that game. Its additional appeal was probably that it was a family friendly game.

Good video, Pete. I must admit, it seems I haven't played a great deal of Bullfrog games. I could never get into Populous or Powermonger; just not good at RTS's :( I remember playing Magic Carpet on the display computer at my local PC shop. I think I enjoyed it... The Theme series, as you can imagine, is definitely something I'm familiar with. I saved for ages for a copy of Theme Park for the Mega Drive whilst reading the same magazine articles over and over. I saw a copy of Theme Aquarium in CeX many years ago and kicked myself for not picking it up at the time due to not being able to understand Japanese at all. Nowadays, I'd give it a shot, so I'm actually watching a couple of copies on ebay. That having been said, I do have Aquarium on PC, so... :D

Great video mate! As discussed, I'm a big fan of Hi-Octane. I started with it on DOS in '95, then bought both the SEGA Saturn & PlayStation ports last year. I still enjoy it rather a lot, but crazy the amount of space it takes up for saving on the Saturn! I think the music is quite well done too and I would go as far to say as I enjoyed it more than the DOS port of WipEout (though not over 2097; that's a no-contest). I had both Magic Carpet & Magic Carpet 2 on the PC; didn't enjoy either of them. At the time I would much rather play Panzer Dragoon on the PC instead. My Mrs still plays Theme Hospital and has even had our son playing it. I think we have probably every physical PC version of that game released due to the amount of times we've lost it - at least 7 discs. Thankfully she has a digital version now (on Origin and originally via GOG, sigh!).

I played Magic Carpet a fair bit back in the day, as I never played Panzer Dragoon (or indeed a Saturn) until the last eight years or so. Ha, that's awesome that your son gets involved playing Theme Hospital, those games are good for improving problem solving and task management skills.

I have to say that besides all the criticise, Populous: the beggining is the only one of the series I still see even today a cult and an active group that actually keep the game and servers for online game alive. As a player of the game, the AI and some map bugs are really annoying...

Great video! I have Syndicate for my 3DO, and while it looks great and runs great, the controller only has 3 face buttons and 2 shoulder buttons, so it's not very playable. I should get the game on gog.com

Thanks, Dave! I've never tried the 3DO version, but the console ports aren't a patch on the Amiga or DOS versions. I play it on my Amiga, but also on my laptop via GOG. It's brilliant, and I think t's under a fiver. Bargain!

Playing Populous and winning is feasible untill the enemy AI starts dropping volcanoes on your lands like serial nukes. What's more, the enemy AI can clearly be seen cheating. It doesn't need to remove all land down to the water level if it wished to remove rocks. For the human player however, it can easily cost you a working mouse. To win in all games up till it becomes next to impossible and not much fun anymore (AI spawning volcanoes), all you have to do is have your people move onto enemy territory as quickly as possible. This is vital because the enemy cannot use natural disasters against you if your people are not clearly separated from the AI people. What was a pity was the fact that in one game, flood was the decisive weapon because most land was flat and the water setting was Deadly (instead of the usual Harmful). It was a pity because it only occurred once (deadly water on a largely flatland world). And when I finally called for the flood, it was incredibly satisfying to see all the unbelievers briefly trying to keep their heads above the water then disappearing...

if my girlfriends queef, i say: ow cute queefy.... so i was abit serious. I did not know of the hairstyle! but the coolest thing is, bullfrog was cool. Dungeon keeper 1 was part of my childhood. I still play it from time to time. Keeper FX version. And theme hospital. After i while i was calling family members needed in psychiatry ... (if u played it, and i assume you did cause ur bullfrog fan, ull understand what i mean....
