I played this game in the late nineties. I have not thought about or even seen this game for more than 10 years. You have no idea how special this exact moment is for me. Manly tears.

***** What were you playing it on in the late 90s?
@Cowinspace9 жыл бұрын
57worldwide Probably on PC. Downside is that the PC version had crap music and sounds and worst of all, no "Let's Go!" at the level start.
@57worldwide9 жыл бұрын
Cowinspace I remember the graphics being way better than all of the videos I have seen, for some reason
@Cowinspace9 жыл бұрын
57worldwide That's just the combination of video compression and being shown at a scale well above the original resolution. Amigas rendered at 320x200 or 640x200 (NTSC) and 320x256 or 640x256 (PAL). So it also depends on the setting or emulation being used. If you want to see it rendered correctly try www(dot)oldgames(dot)dk/freeflashgames/arcadegames/playlemmings.php You'll see that it's tiny on a modern HD screen.

I'll never forget the first time I saw Lemmings on my friend's Amiga. The game, and the system, seemed so astonishingly different and magical, with such incredible music. I'd never really seen a mouse before. It all seemed so out-of-this-world, advanced, luxurious, and extravagant. It was like my friend had a sports car - literally that level of extravagance. After seeing Monkey Island soon after, I knew that I had to own an Amiga! Those two games still stand as absolute seminal pillars of videogame history.

I love the Amiga. Greatest gaming computer of all time. I've been dying to see a new Amiga system, just for nostalgia's sake. But it can never be as innovative as the original Amiga, so I say, leave it be. Amiga lost in the PC wars, but they were/are still the greatest of them all. They changed the world of gaming. No other company has had that impact. None.

Something about the way it seemed so old and many of the levels had all sorts of painful looking traps, like those lightning zappers, flamethrowers and spindding blades. The hellish environments scared me too. I do remember it being fun, and watching this brought a lot of positive and negative memorires back. Thanks for uploading!

The first game was perfect for the Amiga with its mouse. There were classical columns, jets of fire and menacing doors, metallic material, caverns, ice and forests. The elegant simplicity of the graphics on a black background in the Amiga games was all that was needed to highlight the little touches (like the way that they leap in to the door) and to make the Lemmings stand out as a wave with individual strengths that, God-like, could be assigned.

Sigh... The good old days when games had originality and diversity. These days, gaming companies just churn out endless first person shooters and third person Grand Theft Auto/Tomb Raider/Metal Gear stealth games, with the odd sports game in between. With the Amiga you had sports games, shoot em ups, strategy games, point and click adventures, flight sims, platformers, interactive Cinemaware games, text based adventures... I could go on. In my opinion, modern gaming has devolved into bland cash grabbing monotonous FPS sequels and bland variations on third person games. I'm just thankful that there is such a growing Indie gaming scene that's keeping originality alive, although most kids these days would just pass those games up for the next bland Call of Duty sequel. I bought an Amiga, C64, Megadrive and SNES from Ebay, and i'm going to cherish those machines until the day I die. I still get enjoyment out of my Xbox360, PS4 and to a larger extent PC gaming, but I doubt i'll be looking back on them with the same nostalgia that i've had with the 8-bit and 16 bit machines. It's amazing how a longplay video of a 25 year old game can bring out such emotions and such a waffling youtube comment :)

Generalization
@SirHilaryManfat10 жыл бұрын
Wizzard Oo Perhaps. but can you name any truly original games on the market today, that cover such a wide range of different genres? I'm not disagreeing with your opinion that I'm generalising, I'm just interested to see if you can think of any.
@wizzardoo622810 жыл бұрын
Animal House What do you mean with truly original? In my definition 95% of the games back then were just as onorginal as today.
@wizzardoo622810 жыл бұрын
Animal House I would not call that unique. Maybe the fist RTS, the fist roundbased strategy game ( which does not count really, because there where game like that before computers) , the first shooter e.t.c and thats it. All after that is not truly original. Besides that we still have those kinds of games.
@SirHilaryManfat10 жыл бұрын
Wizzard Oo Which one? because in my mind they are all unique in the history of gaming. If you read my previous comment, I did explain that my definition of unique can be a general concept that is utilised in a unique way. Lemmings did this, by taking the platform genre and making something that had never been done before. Of course you can pick any game that's ever been made and pinpoint it to a basic genre such as a shooter or platformer, but that would be generalising. Something that you've already accused me of. So if you don't agree with generalising as a rule, then I don't understand how you can generalise the definition of an original gaming concept in such a basic manner? All the games I've previously mentioned took a basic format and made something unique with that format. If you look at games nowadays, first person shooters are just variants of Call of Duty. There maybe a slight addition here or there, but nothing that stands out from all the others. It's the same with third person games. Grand Theft Auto took the third person concept and created a unique sandbox game. Since then, it's just been regurgitated in different formats, from the Assassins Creed series to The later Resident Evil games (ruining the series in the process). With regards to other genres, Metal Gear Solid took the stealth concept and made it something amazing. Yet nowadays every stealth game is just a variant on that. Flight sims are still around, but it's extremely rare to find a modern flight sim release on the PC, let alone any other gaming platform. For instance, Microsoft's last release of their Flight Sim series is almost 10 years old now. It only survives, like most other flight sims, on community modding. And I know from personal experience that game modding is a fiddly and awkward. You also used to get sports games that covered just about every sport imaginable, from ice hockey, winter sports, summer sports, darts, wrestling. These days, most of the sports titles are just football and basketball. There's not as much choice.

The string sample plays scratchy on certain releases of Lemmings. I had the original disks for Lemmings on the Amiga 500 and a scene release with a trainer, on the original set the music played right and on the one with the trainer it didn't. I preferred having the trainer 9 times out of 10 as some of the levels were HARD! Cliffnotes: The music isn't broken by WinUAE, it's the game. :)
