What is also incredible in this wonderful music is the fact that the Amiga 500 was limited to 4 voices, 2 on the left 2 on the right (not real stereo). There were voices only, not tracks, which meant only 4 samples could be played at the same time, so a simple 3 notes chord just left one voice free. Therefore musicians prerecorded necessary chords in several samples to save voices, but the Amiga ram was very little, so this music is not only artistically a jewel, it is also technically amazing :-)

Hm, maybe at the time of the release you're right, but programs like Impulse Tracker have the same power and they can use even more channels. If you watch the second channel you'll recognize that there were used sampled melodies so with just four channels and no sampled melody this song couldn't even be made, just my opinion.
@aIanzin7 жыл бұрын
Impulse has more channels. Talented composers did great songs with this tool... but, only Amiga sounds like Amiga... lol

@@KriscrossnewsDe Nope, no sample melody, if you see the command A-F on the second channel as you say, thats a "Trance gate" sort of, making the sound stutter
@KriscrossnewsDe3 жыл бұрын
@@dreamix2007 Yep, thanks for the hint, I didn't recognize the A-F command at the first sight. I watched it again and yes, there are no sampled melodies. Sorry for my misguess.

The first segment sounds almost identical to Stardust Memories by Jester. According to the minimal sources I can find, Stardust Memories came after. I like what Jester did with the samples found here, but it's cool to see the original inspiration for one of my favorite tracks. I never heard Hyperbased before but I love how many different parts there are.

I'd say that style was in vogue in general in the mid to late 80s, they've probably both inspired by what Jean-Michel Jarre were doing at the time.

I don't know why but it seems that the two most well known Commodore machines were just ahead of their time when it comes to sound production. The Commodore 64 had the SID which while it only had 3 voices could do some amazing things that it took people years to figure out. Atari's POKEY was probably the closest competitor at the time. Then comes the Amiga and just blew everybody away. Four channels each with 16 voices. And probably again, it took time until people really started knowing about and exploiting the full potential of the PAULA chip. Was it 1988 that Carsten Obarski's tracker program was released? I think it was 1988. I keep wondering whether the Amiga was how popular it was despite being a Commodore product considering how poorly managed the company was a lot of the time. Imagine what the company would have been like if run properly. I guess IBM clones would still have meant that the Amiga would have left the market but surely the company would have lasted longer? Maybe even have taken part in the 3D graphics revolution with the Hombre graphics adapter that I remember reading about a while back. Who knows?

Maybe the Amiga culture? The Amiga itself had no sounds built in at all. Software supplied them all.
@Mnnvint3 жыл бұрын
@@jsrodman Yeah, there was a "standard" set of samples which got used a lot more than others, which helped define the "sound" of the Amiga. In particular Karsten Obarski's sample disks, many of which were apparently samples of a Yamaha DX21. I think the iconic "slap bass" sample used in many Amiga modules came from there.
