Growing up, Amilli never dreamed of a music career. Dad loved spinning jazz records and her parents encouraged their kids to sing and play instruments, but music was something the 20-year-old “just did for herself.” Then, as the Bochum, Germany native says in her own words, she “slipped into” it. Things got started with a SoundCloud upload of a track crafted just for fun in a friend’s basement. Then the anti-materialism message of “Rarri” upped the ante. Similar to Lorde’s “Royals,” “Rarri” uses pop arrangements to forward a barbed notion about the current state of pop music. Naturally, the Internet loved it. Complex categorized her with Maggie Rogers, Clairo and King Princess as one of pop’s “more dynamic personalities.” The debut EP “Wings” was fetching, and Amilli’s follow-up releases have shown even more dedication to versatility. “Alone In the Rain” and “Not Tryna Be Your Girl” feel truly lived-in, with soulful vocals and analogue drum breaks that conjure Lauryn and Amy. These live performances of the latter track and “Die For You," featuring Ghanaian rapper Serious Klein, will make a fan of anyone who takes the time to listen.
