Their newfound Christianity offers an element of escape and freedom from it because it is different, a rejection of what oppressed them. I wonder though if they would have converted had they not had that envirinmental context. Their relationship to Him is like any relationship to a historical figure. The main purpose of the Gospel is not to teach us about Jesus but rather to make us alive to God and to reconcile us to Him.

I have come across testimonies of Christians who had to keep their conversion to Islam secret too. Some were disowned by their Christian families, by their community and friends and work too. I don't think we should make generalisations. Plus Muslims do just leave, especially if in the west, or they leave to the west. It depends upon the culture and mentality of the people around them more than Islam itself that determines what their experience leaving Islam will turn out.
