"Grandma won't tell" this is how grandmas and grandpas should be. It's always their job to be the people you can tell a secret and you'll always be able to count on them to take it to the grave no matter what. exactly. I have so many fond memories of both my grandfather and my grandmother telling me this. Grandma, when she snuck me sweets, a few coins for sweets, or an extra piece of cake (she was from the generation that showed love b feeding you) Or grandma, when we got up to some shenanigans that my parents deemed "unsafe" to which he would smile and nod and take me away to do it anyways. As a 39 yr old man, from the Midwest who’s in construction with zero ties to Amish, why is this so touching? To see them seeing things for the first time was very neat.

It's a nice perspective shift, and it's lovely to see teenage and young adult people appreciating things. When travel is relatively cheap and everything is on TV and in the movies, it's hard to find someone older than elementary school who is having a truly new, positive experience. And the fact that everyone around them is reacting with positivity at the beauty and the opportunity to experience, rather that jaded at the world or incredulous at the lack of experience, is so endearing.

@@bealestcat I'm not a troll I promise. I lived in a small Amish community for many years, and this past week I had 11 of my Amish friends here visiting overnight on their way to their vacation. I just want to say that Amish are free to vacation, see the ocean, go to Florida, go scuba diving, to shows, aquariums, zoo's, anything they want to do. They are not sheltered in that way at all. Also, most of the Amish travel extensively, more than an average person. People only know what they see on shows. My best friend who is Amish has been to Alaska, walked on glaciers, and has been to almost all of our 50 states and many national parks. Thanks for listening.

@@TheNoonie50 You hit the nail on the head. If you are not in the community - you only know what tv brings to us. Is it true that some Amish communities are more strict than others?
@TheNoonie50
@TheNoonie50 3 жыл бұрын
@@bealestcat Absolutely! and some Amish leave their communities for less strict ones. Some are allowed to ride bikes, some can only ride scooters. Some cannot use buttons on their clothes, and have to fasten their dresses with straight pins. The list goes on and on depending on their community. Old Order Amish are very strict, but I can tell you, that these are some of the finest people and best friends I've ever had. No drama! We help each other out, and lift each other up. So refreshing. Thanks for your open mind.

I met a very similar girl to these who grew up in a small religious community in the desert. She visited Australia during a big solar storm so I took her to the beach. Her idea of a beach was the same "trees and water" she never imagined something like the aurora reflected off the ocean. We talked to a cameraman and he let us see his long-exposure footage of rainbow lights sliding across the sky. It's nice knowing she can take these memories home with her. I don't think anyone else from her town had heard of an aurora and she saw it with her own eyes. Light from the heavens :)

They grew up in a style of community that is often rife with abuse. Their isolation often leads to more frequent premature deaths than people living with readier access to medical care. And they grow up on farms where death and life go hand in hand. You're the one who sounds like you've got a superiority complex. This is the most wonderful thing to watch happen. They are experiencing the things we all take for granted. At one point the ocean was the same for me but I forgot how cool it is cause I would go there every day. It got old. These two adorable girls reminded me of the things I take for granted and to be more appreciative of what I have.

I am a sixty year old gay man and I just cried when I saw the two of you see the ocean for the first time. "This is the most beautiful day of my life," one of you said. I'm still crying. I see so much beauty in being Amish and I see so much beauty in experiencing life beyond being Amish. I agree with the one of you who said you'd prefer the peace of an out house rather than the "robot" toilets that flush the moment you stand up, sometimes even before you sit down! I love the images of the canned peaches and other homemade canned goods. One can admire the simplicity of the Amish while also admiring the beauty of modern conveniences and life. I cried again when the two of you went up in the parasol flying over the ocean and I just know that your grandma, your dear, dear grandma is going to get a big hug from Jesus when she makes her way into the next realm. She wanted you to "feel closer to God" by experiencing more of life than you had been allowed to. Bless your grandma, girls! And bless you two! 🙂
