Born and raised Amish... my husband and I left in our early 20s, soon after our marriage. This song was sung at our wedding and that of so many others before us- and all of them after us, I'm sure. It was always the last "Lied" (hymn) as the bridal procession exited the ceremony. Though I never regretted leaving the Amish, hearing these songs always brings goosebumps and nostalgia. They're a part of our roots and history, and I'll be able to remember and sing this song when I'm 80...

This is facsinating to me. I have been reading tons of Amish fiction books lately and when I see something I don't know about I look it up. The book I am reading right now mentioned the Lob Song...so I looked that up first...then I noticed this on the side so I clicked it. I love the idea of the rich traditions of the Amish. I know I could never live the life...especially after growing up a suburban Englisher...but I love some of the ideas so much that I try to fit some of it into my life. I love the idea of simplicity. I want to write a letter to the Amish, which begins like the following: Dear Family, For a long time now, i've been only dreaming of joining an Amish community, beginning with being adopted by some Amish family who can use my help, perhaps, and for which i'm entirely ready to be scrutinized by some family, and by the Elders, and by whatever means you folks might determine this could be possible - i'll undergo whatever you wish, and so that i might join you. For one thing, my entire life with 'the english' is a shining example to, say, your YOUTH, who may be thinking of leaving their people, their home, shining in that I would scare any young person to reconsider leaving on account of what i know which would shock them upon experiencing and yearn desperately to return HOME.... ps: i listen and i HEAR these glorious songs often throughout every week...still dreaming here, getting ready (?💕🤔🙄💕) to write such a letter and thinking about where/who to send it to, only...i already live a lot like the Amish and craft all my own foods that i CAN, and i farm, make ALL of my own healing agents and abhore 'drs and dentists visiting' for many years now..ok, Ed Yoder, i shall shush now💕😋...oh, except this, TOO: all my worldy goods would be given over to my Amish family, of course! pps: i ride an electric trike and wear my hair in sidebuns and dress very modestly, too. phewwww i know i sound crazy, but trust me, i went crazy on purpose and it took some TIME!🤣 And on account of THESE TIMES.💕

+Ivan Yoder That's an interesting turn of phrase; "depart the Amish faith". I'm not American, but from what I know of the Amish via some Mennonite friends, I would have said that the Amish faith is Christian, but that they are an extreme expression of it. My angle on it is that the Amish are a denomination, not a "faith" in themselves. Are you saying that you left Christianity when you left the Amish? I would be genuinely interested in your reply, sir.
@mochip1239 жыл бұрын
+Steve Young When I say "Amish faith" and departing the Amish faith I am simply saying the way I was taught the 1st 25 years of my life was to place my faith in the Amish way of life and the Amish church rules of the particular Amish settlement I was in. I was taught that this is the way to be pleasing to God along with that Jesus died because we are sinners. Violating church rules was frowned on by the leaders and would lead to shunning and ex-communication. I am a believer, and now place my faith solely in Jesus Christ and what He accomplished for my sin on the Cross. I have a deep love for my people and always will have.

***** I keep being amazed at people that interact from the outside and think they know what goes on. I am not judging everyone and I'm not trying to imply everyone is the same, or put them all in the same box. You make it sound like a few don't get it. Maybe in some circles. I'm talking about communities and districts that reject Christ, not a few individuals. And this where my burden is. For those who try some hard and yet reject the only true Savior. I was hardcore Amish for 32 years and raised my family that way. My eyes were opened when I asked myself the question? What would Jesus do or say if he were in our midst today?

Seems so sad, that many of the people leaving remarks, are "shunned", because they choose to question in order for an explanation,rather than as a means to insult. The message from The Lord was simple, he did not say that we could not question or remain ignorant. For all the closenes of the Amish, there seems to be a lot about complete control, a fear of change,rather than progress
@andrewp24446 жыл бұрын
That is their choice. Look at the facts. Someone raised in a mainline baptist family is more likely to leave their church, than an Amish person is likely to leave his/her own church. For every 2 born into a mainline Baptist family, 1 will leave. By comparison for every 7 born into an Amish church, 1 will leave. It seems that mainline churches have a much greater problem with those who have grown up in their faith questioning their own churches rather than the Amish that have a 85-90% retention rate.
@greenshp6 жыл бұрын
Your judgmental attitude, about things you likely know little about, is why I as a modern Christian can't stand Evangelicals. The Amish would be far LESS judgmental than you are (I know this first hand) about you. For your information, and those here who are less apt to jump to conclusions, I read that some people here aren't "shunned" but may have voluntarily left the Amish. When a person is shunned, by the way, they can return to the community after acknowledgement of the offense before the community (during a church meeting usually). And no one forgives as completely as an Amish community. Also, not every community even practices shunning. People really need to stop talking about it, after getting their info from made for TV movies and smarmy romance novels.
