Ammo Shortage was the worst it has ever been during the COVID period. However, it looks like we may be heading back in that direction in the end of 2023 and into 2024!

its all amusing because if they bought a box every time they went to the store they would have 0 reason to pannick buy so they do it to them selves when they pay $1-$2 on an item that sells for 30-50 cents each, just like the stock market but a little here and there and it will add up.

The problem is guys like you who don't think the whole thing through. Americans bought 21 million guns 2020, 18 million in 2021 and 17 million in 2022. The totals for 2023 are 1.4 million per month. There were 5.4 million first time gun owners in 2021 alone. All of those guns need to be fed and you're not considering that, stop blaming panic buyers for your problem. The real problem is the FJB administration trying to throttle gun and ammo buying and the ammo manufacturers not keeping up with demand. The Hornady plant explosion, Lake City canceling all of it's civilian orders by order of the FJB admin and now Federal being bought by a foreign buyer are really going to hurt.

About 20 years ago I was given some advise from a Korean war veteran which has proven good. Anytime your out getting stuff, pick up a box of shells, what ever you decide, over time you'll have plenty and be able to shoot what you have. Over time it'll add up at a small investment.

The ammo prices have gone up a lot in the last five years and I haven't bought much in the last few years but I am stocked up for so and reloading supplies.

You left out how Vista Outdoor, which is our largest civilian ammo producer, just recently sold to a foreigner for 1.9 billion dollars. Vista Outdoor partners with (correction: they own) companies like Remington, Winchester, CCI, Federal, and more

I’m glad I stocked up on ammo to feed my ARs a couple years ago. That seemed more important than handgun ammo at the time. Time to stock up on 9/40 and .45. Hard to find in local shops but buying online and shipping to your local store seems like the way to go, a lot more availability at a lower price.

Reloading is the best habbit i could ever have started. The price of good projectiles is great, powder is reasonable and then get yourself whatever caliber die set you may need (lee ultimate) and i have their hand press. I knock out 10mm, 45acp, 450 bushmaster and 223/556.

No matter what comes under shortage, youll be able to find ammo for at least one of those. SO not bad idea to have sidearms for all of em. .40 wont go anywhere in our lifetimes, too many guns out there chambered in it, still lots of folks buying .40 ammo..

PSA and AEammo are my general go to for ammo. PSA is like 10$ shipping and AEammo is free shipping on orders over 250$. I usually hit the range twice a month but at current ammo prices I might have to cancel range membership for awhile. I refuse to pay over 50cents a round for 223 range ammo.

I've been stocking up since about 2007 or maybe even before that. This happens every election year and gets worse every time. I live in Idaho just about 20 miles across the border from Oregon. I was buying some ammo this last Saturday. In front of me was a guy from Oregon and he was saying that he had to come over the border because people from Cali had bought up all of the ammo in Oregon. So when he left, I bought a bunch more than I usually do because I'll be damned if some foreigners are going to come across our border and buy up all our fun before I get my fill.

I got 1000 m855 rds off a website couple weeks back then i was working about an hour away from my house and stopped by a gun shop in the area i was in they had 1000rd cases stacked 5ft high in 6 rows all 55gr Winchester 556 and 223 for $525 its a store way out in the sticks i figure i may make a ride back there tomorrow and pick one up.

What I learned last time around was ammo ran out before components. Reloading eq was everywherebut no components. Buy components now and eq later and you'll be fine. Powder and primers are the hard part. Projectiles next. I bought everything I need to cast bullets in 2020 and powder coated lead is better than nothing.

I understand the possibility of shortages with 556 and 223. 9MM is still plentiful, however, some of the brass, powder, etc. for 9MM and other cartridges could end up on the 556 and 223 lines. Hunting ammo was always in stock the last two shortages because nobody wanted to pay $1-1.50/rd for premium 223. i pay that much because I shoot ELR and hunt often.

In Australia we are paying a absolute minimum of $1 per round for the cheapest .223 you could find average price is $30 for a box of 20 and for decent quality ammo now $40 to $50 a box in .308 you are looking at $45 minimum to just over $100 a box of 20.

The big problem with that strategy is once the odd calibers are sold out they never get replaced because they claim there focusing primarily on the more common calibers. M One of my favorite hunting rifles is in 300 savage that is next to impossible to find! Not that there's a run on it!

Stock up here and there over time. Buy bullet molds, reload components best possible. Learn to make black powder...works great in shotguns etc. Saves using those expensive jacketed loads. Powder coating cast bullets permits 2000 Ft a sec with negligible leading issues.

I will say Scheels had good inventory in Colorado Springs on all Ammo on Tuesday and then Friday it was decimated. Guys had carts buying cases of 5.56 , 9mm, even 22LR, and 12 gauge. Manager said on Friday, they are going to enforce limits. You could tell people were panic buying because Hunting Ammo was plentiful which it should not be in Colorado during hunting season.

With all the crises that have happened over the last few years it amazes me that we don’t have thousands of small ammo producers popping up to take advantage of the demand. The only thing I can think of is regulations preventing people from starting an ammo production business. The demand for ammo right now is outrageous but the supply simply isn’t there.

I've heard that in the US there's only like 2 or 3 plants that make primers, which is totally insane to me. How hard is it to make primers!? Tesla is building "Giga-factories" that make bust out millions of lithium-ion batteries, but some entrepreneur can't make a factory that makes tiny primers? I'm telling you something very weird is going on. We need an Elon Musk of ammunition production for real.

Lake City is not a rumor. It is confirmed that Lake City production has prioritized to fulfilling govt (including allies) needs and cancelled civilian/commercial sales fulfillment at present. My wife is in a particular logistics position in the military and she has confirmed this by telling me that open source media reports are correct.

Just strikes me as odd that production wouldn't increase. I don't expect them to add more lines, because then you're stuck when supply evens out with capacity that's not being used. But certainly could put in some extra shifts or ensure that material supply chains are strong enough to keep production going at a steady rate. I actually think Lake City focusing on military supply is smart, given the fact the US is a target given our long-standing alliance with Israel. If Hezbollah moves south into Israel, ammunition is going to be thrown their way at an astounding rate, and that has to be replaced. Unknown how much was taken from Israel in the first few days when outposts and checkpoints were overrun. Not a huge factor, but again, has to be replaced. The US drew down caches in Israel to supply Ukraine, but a lot of that was 155 mm artillery, so not a factor for small arms ammo, but..some of that might have been moved as well. But if the US is buying it up, and Israel is looking for more, stands to reason they could throw some more shifts in on the weekends, or times they're not doing maintenance. And obviously, with things heating up, US consumers are going to want to stockpile even more.

If I were an ammo supplier and I only made 0.02/rd, I would spread rumors about ammo shortages to make 10x the profit too! So, as a smart consumer you know this, and as such you learn the usual price of ammo and then refuse to buy it unless it’s the normal price. THEN, when everyone does this, their scare tactic doesn’t work.

AMMO shortage is here NOW. Last Saturday ordered 100 rnd box of 5.56 FMJ M193ball from PSA in SC. Informed by email yesterday from them they are out of stock and cant fulfill order. They have the stock and also conveniently raised prices for no reason other than they could. It’s the reason I avoid these stores as much as possible. I’m well stocked with 223/556 because prices were pretty close to normal over the summer and with the last rebate offered from Winchester it just made sense going into an election year. I refuse to be part of the inflated price problem so I’ll just adjust my range trips accordingly like a few years ago.

Lake City has been ordered to end commercial sales and is ramping up on production of the sig fury .277 rounds as well as beginning production of the XM7 and XM250 rifles. This was news three years ago. New sales of 5.56 green tip penetrators and tracers are a thing of the past.

Im calling BS on the ammo shortage. This seems like a social media hype to sell ammo and a higher price. EVERYONE I know that shoots has bought ammo for the last 5 years and paid way to much for a while but bought out of fear. Nobody I know really need to make any big ammo purchases. I think maybe they see a slowdown in ammo sales like gun sales and are trying to get out in front of it.

My local store said their distributor won't have any more till the beginning of next year. Considering the prices, I got what I thought was reasonable for me to have some, then I bought a 22lr conversion kit so I can enjoy shooting my gun. With a conversion kit, I might shoot 20rds of 556 on a range trip. 62gr 556 is $15 a box around me. I will probably take up reloading and stock up on primers and powder, then start collecting brass. That will allow me to tune some rounds and I will probably be less likely to shoot as much because I will be collecting data as well.

When I was a kid target shooting and hunting, there used to be only a few brands of ammo out (Remmington, Federal, Winchester, and a couple others). Now I see a $#--t ton of brands I've never heard of before. In your opinion are any of them any good? Do any push out recycled as new? I’m certainly no expert but this makes 4 “ammo shortages” I’ve been through. I don’t think the wars have one bit of an effect other then price gouging for the consumer. Ukraine is mostly 5.45 and 7.62. Not much effect on 5.56 IMO. The Israelis have their own Lake City arsenal in IMI with plenty stocked back. Sending ground troops in an area 10 miles wide is supposed to dry up the 5.56mm ammo? And they aren’t even American troops. Hint, 90% of my 5.56 was purchased at the height of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, a little bigger then the Gaza Strip, well, 500X bigger. I paid 26 cents per round for top quality brass IMI and Lake city ammo during this time but now I see $1 per round because of war? The shortage will be no different then others with panic buying and rumors fanning the flames. In addition, AAC has just come on line and is due in November to start rolling out steel com bloc ammo to replace what the kid sniffer took away earlier. Don’t panic buy! I saw people paying $80 a brick for .22 rounds I just bought previously for $14 at Wal-Mart. Wonder if the shortage was because of .22 cal being used up in a war somewhere?😂 Seriously, if you were caught off guard and are hurting on ammo this one is on you. It’s been available and getting cheaper weekly. One must wonder if that is the main reason for the shortage. Got to go now, I’m buying 50 cases of toilet paper because I heard a new variant of COVID was due soon😂

You guys are lucky,here in Australia we haven’t been able to reload anything,there has been no primers available for over 3 years now and it’s showing no signs of going back to normal anytime soon. All we can get is factory ammo and there’s brass,projectiles,and gunpowder but no primers at all. Currently 20 rounds of .308 Winchester 150 grain are $58.00 ! 20 rounds of 6.5 creedmore is $68.00 ! It’s ridiculously expensive. 9mm ammo is $45.00 a box.

Bought conservitivly when there was supply. I'm stocked up on ammo and reloading supplies.. Will be using 22lr to practice with until things get back to normal. Built a 22LR dedicated upper.
