= Check out the updated version here, it's got new shells, better visuals and fixed errors: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHe4mmmDfb2Eq7s = Thank you for all the positive comments! A couple of things to note: -HEAT does not actually melt the copper. It just forces it through the armor. -The reason APDS is better at angles is because it has much more velocity than APCR. This way, it can go through angled armor easier. -Fins do not make a shell more aerodynamic or give it more velocity, it makes a shell more stable over long distances by stopping it from rotating. Because it's not spinning, the shell has a much lower chance of going somewhere else, therefore the shell is stabilized. Thus, shells with fins are better over distances than regular shells. (This is also why the shells with fins are called "fin-stabilized.") -Due to a recent nerf, HESH no longer performs better when it faces angled armor. -The shrapnel shell has many different names, but the reason I called it that is because in-game it is called shrapnel. The correct term would be fragmentation. -🅱️esh Thank you to all who corrected me :)

Just a quick correction because almost everyone gets this wrong, but in HEAT shells the Copper lining isn't melted Instead the pressure from the explosive charge changes the Copper lining into a Superplastic, which is when the pressure causes the otherwise Solid Copper to act more like a stream of fluid, even though it is way below it's melting point and still a Solid. This is important because actual molten metal would just splatter over the armour and not achieve much, but a Superplastic will bore through the armour, since it retains it's Solid form Density. This is a very minor difference but it seems like 99% of people don't know this and just assume the Copper is melted, even though no HEAT warhead achieves temperatures or pressure anywhere near enough to melt copper.

One thing you need to add to the APFSDS round is they are usually fired from smoothbore guns. The fact it’s not rifled makes that round travel faster. Because the round itself isn’t spun through rifling the fins are angled slightly to create spin thus stabilizing the round in flight and making sure it flies straight.

@@CS-nq9sq HESH is not about penetration, it is producing shockwave in the steel plate and when this shockwave is at the other side of the plate it is starting to rip off small parts of it and they are flying with great speed into crew, ammo and electronics. That is one of the reasons why modern tanks have multiple layers of armor(HESH works nice only on old fashion armor that is made with single continuous layer of metal). HEAT is all about penetration and contrary what is in the game you have jet that is doing damage just like it is implemented in game and something like 30% of force of the explosion outside of the tank is transfered into that small hole and presure wave is killing the crew and igniting the ammo... Generaly in case of HESH thicker armor = less damage inside but in game it is more like 0-1 situation, you were able to "penetrate" or not.
@ventrasel4 жыл бұрын
5:14 Small correction. Larger projectile length means greater penetration since the projectile is destroying itself by penetrating armor. Therefore, all modern AP shells themselves are extremely long and made of the hardest alloys such as tungsten or depleted uranium. Also, the amount of post-penetration shrapnel is directly related to the thickness of the armor the shell has to overcome - the thicker a breached armor, the more shrapnel it would create. The rest is great video, very easy to grasp. Keep it up ;)
@NarutoMagicCyclops4 жыл бұрын
"hardest alloys such as tungsten or depleted uranium." It's not really about "hardest" per se, a factor but not the greatest determining factor for penetration, it's the mass of either and depleted uranium breaks apart in a manner that helps it penetrate, the term for it is often call self sharpening but I've read enough to where it's pretty negligible or the terminology isn't accurate. Tungsten is the densest material but really expensive in comparison to depleted uranium.

@@mememetal6631 Spalling is an effect of hardened metal "splintering" in a sense, creating shrapnel, the thicker the armor the more likely a non-penetration may cause spalling depending on how fragile the armor is(typically harder metal is more fragile and thus spalls more often). A properly penetrating round more ideally should shatter to cause fragmentation inside the vehicle rather than causing spalling which in itself wont cause munitions to det, fragmentation would lead to round det.

Just a point, the cap on AP doesn't actually cause the shell to normalise in the hammer you describe. The soft cap actually absorbs some of the impact, decreasing the deceleration forces experienced by high velocity shells, thus reducing their tendency to shatter on impact to harsh angles. It's a bit counterintuitive but slowing down the shell actually improves it's armour penetration against armour.
@maral20142 жыл бұрын
8:15 the material in HESH tip is an inert material so that the HE filler in the shell itself does not detonate on impact. It is like a buffer of sorts. The base fuze detonates the filler once the HESH shell distributes its explosives across the plate.

APDS is better against angled armor than APCR because the sabot of the APCR has the opposite effect of a ballistic cap. The way it deforms angles the projectile away from the armor plate instead of into it. APDS is also somewhat better against angled armor than regular AP shells simply by the virtue of being much higher velocity. There are two ways of defeating angled armor without doing any normalization: Overmatch, where the round is so heavy that it can't easily be deflected and hypervelocity, where the rounds is going so fast that it can't easily be deflected. On a physical level what happens in these cases is that the momentum of the round is so high that the energy required to redirect it's path is higher than the energy required to push it through the armor.

APDS is technically a small APCBC round fired really fast, APFSDS has the same effect, the pentrator is encased with softer metal, that due to huge velocity has a high normalisation effect, basically APDS inside APFSDS
@acywei4 жыл бұрын
What? HAAAAAAaaaaa? The penetrator isn't encased in anything, it has a sabot which is used to make the very thin tungsten (super hard) penetrator fit into a large caliber gun. The sabot is discarded pretty much as soon as it the penetrator leaves the barrel thus the Armor Penetrating(or) Discarding Sabot. And APCBC (not APBCB dafuq is that?) is exactly as described in the video. It is a full caliber shell (fits perfectly in the barrel) that just happens a couple of fancy caps/tips attached to the front of the penetrator. Those 2 shells couldn't operate on more different ballistic principles as far as standard kinetic ammunition goes.

HESH and HEAT are totally wrong in the game. When a HEAT grenade penetrates a target everything inside should be dead because of the hot gas and the rapid change of the pressure inside the tank.

The main difference between APCR and APDS (and probably the cause of their different performance against sloped armor), is that an APDS round while being as light as an APCR round (main reason why they are both really good against flat armor), doesn’t keep its casing during flight, and this benefits two things: 1 it gives the shell a better drag coefficient (enabling it to keep good performances at high distances); 2 on impact there is only a rigid core hitting the amor, while with APCR the coating gets in the way of the core, having pretty much the opposite effect of the cap on a APC shell.

If u have problem to pen tiger I or II without APCR just get IS-2 or some other soviet tank in mid-tier, heavy tanks have only aphe with penetration above 200mm, more than 100g of explosive mass, great armor, mobility. Oh and IS-2 is at 5.7 and jumbo is at 5.3 so if u have problem with it get IS-2 :)

@rickmcclellan72802 жыл бұрын
As for your question on " APDS " unlike the APCR which is just vary hard metal the APDS round is multilayered . The sequence upon impact of the APDS projectile, for example the 120 mm L11, as used on the Chieftain tank, fired L15 APDS [6] (muzzle velocity 1370 m/s), goes as follows: the lightweight ballistic cap is crushed, the penetrating cap then strikes the armour, distributing the shock across the whole surface of the core's nose, reducing the initial shock experienced by the core. The steel sheath surrounding the core peels away, and the core goes on to penetrate the armour. The penetration of the L15 APDS is approximately 355 mm of rolled homogeneous armour at 1000 m.

@@panther7584 The KV2 was from 1939 so those probably didn't exist yet.
@edi98924 жыл бұрын
@@panther7584 AFAIK, HESH was developed at the end of WWII just like HEAT it struggled with reliable fuses. The fuse has to be sensitive enough to detonate before the shell shatters on impact, but shouldn´t get triggered due to the tremendous forces involved from shooting it out of the barrel, nor should it get destroyed in the same process... That´s why you need very sturdy electronics, just like with VT. The advantage of HESH over HE is AFAIK that you can simply pack a little more explosive and that it minimizes the distance to the target, whereas HE can explode a bit further away or bounce off. The thicker shell produces shrapnell but reduces the explosive impact.

1:11 I thought the AP cap does not do so much with "normalizing" but rather reduces the chance that the shell shatters?
@zephyrsuit71652 жыл бұрын
4:55 it has better penetration compared to normal sub caliber is that it doesn't have the soft metal on initial impact. The casing on normal rounds is soft enough that angled armor affects the round before the core can do its job. Without the sabot, it starts the impact with the core.
