Ammonia plays a huge role in the nitrogen cycle. Why are reefers getting ammonia spikes after a cycle? "Why don't I feel like doing anything to my tank?" Staying motivated in reef keeping can be difficult at times! What you can do to stay the course, and not give up. Tom gets you ready for his 75 gallon Starphire DIY AIO.

One other thing that can damage a biological filter and cause a small spike in ammonia or nitrite!!!!! Is copper sulfate especially if you are treating a sick fish in a quarantine tank with a biological filter I have seen this happen back in the day I'm sure most reef Keepers know to never use meds in a reef tanks!!!! anyway that's why I keep a quarantine tank running full time when I get a new fish they go in there for me to observe them for about a week or more but yes medications can Havoc a biological filter!!!!! They do usually recover in a little time but do cause some damage great video by the way

Hi Tom, gr8 video as usual. I need some help I have a 4 wk old saltwater tank, RO water. Amonnia .25 ppm Nitrite between 4 and 8 ppm Nitrate 66 Ppm Do i need to do anything or just wait, i did the dr. Tims one and only plus the dr tims ammonia. Stopped using it 2wks ago. Is it normal to have all 3 parameters showing at the same time. Thanks for your help.....
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 6 ай бұрын
Hi Jack, yes very normal. You could try a partial water change of 50% to see if your amonnia and nitrite comes down. Then test again in a week to see if they come back. If they do, then your cycle isn’t complete.👍🏻

Hi tom, can i remove diatoms and green algae in my live rocks Using a brush? Can i scrub it
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Miguel, you can with hair algae. Try and siphon as much as you can after you brush. It sounds like you have a huge issue there. Once in my career I had the same thing and I was forced to remove all the rocks and brush and clean them off in salt water in a bucket and then put them back. Add lots of hermits. If that’s not possible do as I said and just give it time keep making large water changes and eventually they’ll go away.

T down to 1 fish in my 30 ,should I take the inverts out and treat main display,or do a plastic hosp tank which I set up but seems like a waste to stress only 1 fish . I got copper power.I never treated with copper before never had to the velvet came in on a snaill weeks ago …only way in must have been on its shell I guess, nothing else has been added for at least 4 or5months

This is a great article, I saw it some time ago and think at this point you should follow this. Its a great resource aquariumstoredepot.com/blogs/news/marine-velvet I’ve never had marine velvet in my tanks over the years. Inverts can stay in the tank, but you’re gonna need about 75 days of a fallow tank. Check out the article 👍🏻

Hey Tom I was just wondering if you have ever had any experience with brown jelly disease on your corals. I recently purchased a really nice frogspawn, but I noticed a brown looking substance on the stem of the coral. The brown area is small but it isn’t on the actual tissue of the coral. The coral has great extension and colors so it appears very healthy overall just thought it was worth asking.
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Claggz, it should be ok. If the coral looks good, just keep your parameters in check and keep an eye on it. As long as it’s not spreading. You may see it disappear. 👍🏻😊
@matthewhayden6505
@matthewhayden6505 2 жыл бұрын
@@TOMReefer Thanks for the feedback Tom! My thoughts is that the coral at some point experienced some receding tissue and then it recovered to full health leaving a small amount of dead tissue just dangling from the stem of the coral.

Hey Tom I'm loving your videos. If my parameters are fine in my 29g, and I only have about 11 frags in my tank. Can I use Kalkwasser maybe an ⅛ teaspoon or something until my testing says more? Or is it better of leaving it until I see the need for Kalkwasser?
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tunefuly, glad you like the vids!😃 if you’ve been watching me, you know I love kalkwasser in your ATO. It has more benefits than just raising your calcium level or alkalinity. 1/8 of a teaspoon per gallon is fine. That will help the frags grow, and add Calc and alk to your tank. Just test every few days in the beginning.don’t use API tests. 😃👍🏻
@tunefully1792
@tunefully1792 2 жыл бұрын
@@TOMReefer I've seen a lot of calcium tests are very inaccurate. Which do you recommend? I use NYOS nitrate testing but yes API for the rest until I find the best for each parameter.
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 2 жыл бұрын
I believe NYOS is a quality test kit. I use Salifert for nitrate, calcium and mag. I use the Hanna Checker for phosphate and alkalinity. Hannah is quite accurate. But ofc pricy.😊

With the cost of starfire glass wouldn't it be better to just get the tank made professionally? Is it going to be a peninsula or standard?
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, I’m going to make a peninsula AIO. Starphire is not cheap, but tank manufacturers want way more then it will cost me to make it. Plus they make you to buy a stand Etc. your up to more then $1200. Plus I’ll have to mention what brand it is in my vids. That bothers me. 😊👍🏻 they get so much free advertising on KZbin it’s pathetic.

Can’t wait to see the new tank! 5 tanks though? You are a glutton for punishment lol I do have a question for you. I have ordered my pajama cardinalfish school! I went with 6 of them and they should be here tomorrow. My question is do I drip acclimate or not? There seems to be some debate on the dangers of ammonia spikes because of a reaction to the oxygen put in the bags and how it all reacts to air once the bag is opened. Getting long on this but pretty much drip acclimate or not? Thanks as always 👍
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Cory! Haha, I may have to retire one🤪maybe the 6g? As far as acclimation on online orders I hear you. There is a debate. Ammonia builds up in the bags and when the bags open it spikes. Then you’re just letting the fish sit in there for another 45 minutes. I’ve gone the temperature acclimate with the bag closed, 20 minutes and then right in the tank. Obviously, net or hand them out of the bag 🤪Just what I’ve done for years. Keep me posted on that! Sounds cool!
