In this video, I'll be having some fun manganese heptoxide and ammonium permanganate: two very reactive and unstable manganese compounds. Of course, every chemistry channel under the sun has covered manganese heptoxide, so I decided to do a few "new" reactions with it...including one that ends explosively!

WARNING: the compounds depicted in this video are VERY dangerous. Both ammonium permanganate and manganese heptoxide are unstable and can explode if mishandled. Manganese heptoxide is also highly corrosive and will readily ignite flammable materials (and even some non-flammable materials, for that matter). If you attempt anything in this video, use the utmost safety and common sense.

This was really interesting. Chemistry is not necessarily my area of interest, but you made it really interesting. Nice video!

I bet this channel is going to blow up harder than the magnesium in heptoxide! I am proud I can say to have joined before 2.5k

Glad to have you on board for the ride! I love sharing these fun projects with people like you, and I can't wait to share more! Very soon, I'm hoping to be the first KZbin personality to extract (and taste!) resiniferatoxin: the spiciest substance in the known universe. So you have that to look forward to, alongside a large voltage multiplier build and fusion reactor tutorial. Hope I can continue to entertain and educate!

I've seen a few videos playing with manganese heptoxide, but this was pretty neat. That powdered magnesium (or any magnesium) was a trick I haven't seen anyone else do with this stuff. The channel Ordinance Lab, some explosives experts who do fun-silly educational kaboom stuff, managed to make that red colour happen. They were building self-igniting molotov cocktails, so the heptoxide was (very very carefully) mixed in a sealed vial.

I have potassium permanganate I bought to try the glycerin and pot perm thing. Was excited seeing there are as other stuff I could do with it when I saw your video. After watching, I'll think I'll just let you do it and force myself to be content with that... Last thing I need is some random part I missed cleaning up setting off propane tanks I have for metal work, or solvents and other flammable things for woodworking in my shop. Cool and informative project and video!

I'd love to see you make the tetraamine copper permanganate. I considered making it over the years, but when my attempt at making the nitrate counterpart yielded nothing energetic, I stopped messing with inorganic chemistry I didn't understand, lol. That being said, maybe you could try to make the permanganate AND the nitrate!

With the nitrate you have to crush the crystals under dry acetone to get the water out of it. Even then it's not very impressive.

Hopefully not too late, but be very careful with heptoxide. It is very dangerous and difficult to work with, and it is extremely difficult to safely dispose of

I’d be interested in seeing the reaction of a small amount of water added to a mixture of sodium peroxide and calcium carbide. The former decomposes fairly vigorously with water, yielding a lot of oxygen and heat. The latter, of course, when exposed to water, produces acetylene!

Ive experimented with NH4MnO4 quite a bit and I found a mixture that detonates when confined, you need Mg powder, powdered hexamine, and a lil bit of acetone to mix it. Its quite Sensitive to shock and friction but ive had no accidents with it.

Great videos. Just take care and don't get cocky with chemistry. Before nilered there were other channels that were shut down. The reason behind this this started to dabble more into the more violent and unsafe explosives, like nitro glycerin, Aluminum picrate, acetone peroxide. Some channels even got shut down and police raids occurred in their laboratories. It's great science, however many don't care about experience anymore and there is a lot of control in a lot of chemistry products one can buy. I've even seen the innocent have brutal chemical burns and some blinded doing many experiments. Also ones health over time is at stake. Same goes for high voltages and Corona discharge.

How is ammonium permanganate an oxidizer if it is perfectly oxygen balanced?
@LabCoatz_Science
@LabCoatz_Science 9 ай бұрын
An oxidizer is simply a compound that wants to steal electrons from other atoms. Since the manganese in the permanganate has a charge of 7+, it REALLY wants to steal electrons, making it an excellent oxidizer. The oxygen is merely a consequence of permanganate's oxidizing properties: in an effort to reduce manganese's charge from 7+ to something like 3+, it will happily give up its oxygen if given enough heat and fuel. With ammonium permanganate, the fuel just happens to be the ammonium ion bound to the permanganate.
@Auroral_Anomaly

@@LabCoatz_Science I suppose some of the oxygen may escape without oxidizing the ammonia.

How is manganese stored?
@LabCoatz_Science
@LabCoatz_Science 2 жыл бұрын
Manganese? Well, manganese is a metal, so I assume it can be stored in almost anything (maybe under oil if you want to prevent oxidation). But if you're referring to the energetic manganese compounds in this video (ammonium permanganate and manganese heptoxide), they are never really stored due to the explosion risk. They are almost always made "on-site" and used immediately, although what they could be used for I have no real idea. Hope that answers your question!

Ammonium permanganate is apparently know to be more stable than previously thought, it can last 3month in storage at room temp (20c) without decomposition.
