This was great, I've been looking for "how do you fix faded paint on a car?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Banayce Wordless Blueprint - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to master car body work and spraying techniques minus the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my colleague got amazing results with it.

Watching you guys nerd out over this stuff is awesome. I'm a software developer and my homebrew car friends and I often have little tuning crackathons in our free time if we get our hands on a new ECU. Often times 2 or more of us are talking 100 miles/min trying to share ideas while also being interested in what each other have to say. I can only assume we look as endearingly nerdy as you guys do when you collaborate and it shows you're authentic. Love it!

Definitely one to keep referring back to. I think knowing these types of damage is essential when having a conversation with clients regarding their detailing solutions. They need to know what to expect as much as you do. You can't promise someone a mirror finish if they have no clear for you to polish! Some of these are caused by improper technique, which I assume will be discussed in 203. The rest... well, nature is a harsh mistress it seems. As always, 10/10 content. You can't learn this stuff in school!

As soon as you see that faded paint with the big block letter T, you instantly know you're looking at dried out '80-'90s Toyota single stage paint. They can be rather fun and rewarding to correct because the visual results are so dramatic. It is hell on pads though with all the paint transfer and staining. I just throw them away when I'm done, but I'm really OCD about residue control and working clean. Has anyone ever put a ceramic coating on really dried out single stage? I never have, but it seems like it would be absolutely ideal for those paint scenarios when wax and sealants only hold the gloss for a short time.

Great video! Definitely learned a few things, thank you guys! One thing I’ve seen a couple times, only on older red Honda’s is where the paint layer faded under the clear coat. So polishing did nothing for color, only brought back shine. Don’t know if it was a weaker paint or clear coat, but somehow it faded under fully laminated clear coat.

So to be clear with the shrinkage panel example are we saying the the cause would be from not a fully cured primer? Where when the base coat of paint was applied followed by the clear coat, then the primer fully cured/hardened which casued contraction of itself as well as the layers on top of it as well? TIA

I had a 2010 Black Honda Civic and they actually did a warranty item for the paint on the tops on the dark color cars. They would get crows feet very badly, and part of it was they would measure paint depth to verify it hasn't been repainted. I no longer have that car, but before I got rid of it, Honda repainted the hood, roof, and trunk lid to "fix" the crows feet issue. I had no idea what they were at the time, but I sure am familiar with them now. Luckily I didn't have to repair it on my own dime.

I've noticed that crows feet tend to happen more on certain makes and models. Like 2nd generation Subaru Legacy/Outbacks and early to mid 2000 chevy/gmc trucks and SUVs. I wonder if it may also have anything to do with how hard or soft the paint is? But doesn't Subaru have softer paint and GM have harder paint?

Abstract Delamination is the ultimate failure mechanism of a coating. Delamination times often are closely related to the dose of ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaching the substrate or primer, and this dose is related to the UV absorbing capability of the overlying coating. Organic UV absorbers are not permanent, and their photodegradation is an important factor in determining coating lifetime. The kinetics and some of the chemistry of UV absorber photodegradation have been studied extensively over the past decade and applied to coating lifetime prediction. Rates of UV absorber loss vary widely and are highly dependent on the coating matrix, so must be determined on a case-by-case basis. Simple zero- or first-order kinetic schemes give rates that are dependent on the initial absorbance of the sample. This paper discusses a more reliable kinetic equation and applies the rate constant to prediction of delamination times.
