The AMMO Training Academy is BACK! The 200 series is focused on the core fundamentals of paint correction to shrink the learning curve and increase your proficiency quickly. I believe the speed with which you learn a skill determines its value. If we can shorten the time to learn paint correction, the more valuable it is to your business or personal enjoyment. To do this, Kevin Brown and I focused on the core building blocks of paint correction and arranged the content in a simply and strategic manner to best absorb the concepts and demos. The first episode (201) is focused on how the paint reacts to heat and pressure from the polishing machines and pads. This is critical information to anyone "buffing" their car. Hope this sparks productive conversations! -Larry

Didn't Mike Philips from Autogeek have a detailing based show on cable for a very short run many years ago? My father swears he remembers watching it.. He is still a regular on Velocity/Motortrend selling something or other. I've seen Larry before as well, I distinctly remember watching him steam cleaning the hell out of the paint on a filthy barn find car.

This is really amazing - education and instruction from two experts for FREE. I remember just a few years ago, trying to get this type of information from a professional detailer was impossible - "trade secrets". What I like about watching Larry over OG is that Larry KNOWS what he is doing. Its actual learning the proper way from real pros. Matt just wants money, he dont want to be a detailer, or care to be in the industry, he just wants you to buy his stuff. For beginners, that is SO misleading. Right on Larry!

Larry you and Kevin’s did a great job breaking down a complex topic into a 20 minute sound bite. I’m glad you covered that most of the UV protection in clear coat is near the top of the layer. Once gone its gone for the most part. Lastly you never really know what’s been done to the car before you get it. Was it wet sanded, aggressively compounded, damaged and repaired etc. I can not believe how few detailers either own or use a thickness measuring gauge before correcting paint. It’s not the end all be all tool but sure helps in diagnosing paint issues. When I was being taught this stuff the reference was a 3M sticky note representing the thickness of the clear coat.

There is a lot of great information out there, but I seriously appreciate when the Channel's content is spot on. Good information also starts with knowing your audience, aka Speech 101. 2 things: First, I love the "do no harm" concept for detailing. So often I see detailers quote paint correction on something that is either too deep (remove all CC) or so shallow that consistent wax/sealant will render similar results without permanent repercussions. Second, I am curious about the temperature shock and delamination from a DA versus normal environmental effects. Think of a black car in Arizona: If its in a garage, especially a garage with A/C all night, then drives out into the sun at high noon, the temperature shock will be MASSIVE. I've never felt like I could cook an egg on a panel after polishing, but there is plenty of proof you can do just that on a black surface in Arizona summer. Compared to these environmental effects, which auto manufacturers account and test for, the heat shock to the paint from polishing seems negligible. There is always an exception, like polishing one tiny area too much or leaving a rotary in place, but that is just poor polishing technique. With good technique, why would polishing cause expansion/delamination that extends beyond the engineered functional life cycle of the paint? Anybody got any knowledge to drop?

You ever find an answer some other way? I'm curious
@74thavehustler
@74thavehustler 4 жыл бұрын
This has always intrigued me too. Certainly most if not all manufacturers would do environmental testing (in addition to the testing done by the paint/coatings supplier). I’ve seen a few videos where people have attempted to force delamination via DA - and it seems very difficult and I’d view this risk on a case by case basis. I think modern paint systems are very durable and can take a lot of punishment. Still - I believe this is a critical concept to understand and something to be respectful and aware of and as a detailer.
