Works like a charm!!!! Received my .710 mold and collapsable ladle this past week. I had some time today so I went out back to cast several balls. I used a plumbers torch on a small propane tank and in about 20 minutes I had ten perfect .71 caliber round balls. The filing of the sprue and adding dimples with a rasp file was the quickest part of the whole operation. They look fantastic and I will be shooting them out of my NEF at the range in a couple of weeks....... Thanks Dave

My dad made shot and it was pretty easy. Cut a channel into a flat piece of wood with a exit channel small enough the make small drops. Let the drops fall into water about six inches deep. A bowl, jar or hole in the ground works fine. You get great shoot with a few tries. Once you get it working right, shoot for life.

My New England Arms single shot 12 gauge uses 50 calibre Rifled slugs.... So why cast 71 calibre round ball? Is it different because it's "Muzzle loaded"? I know Dave's usually very busy so if any one can help with this question it would be appreciated thank you.
@DavidCanterbury11 жыл бұрын
I have never seen a 73 cal gun shoot a 50 cal round, If you are shooting factory slugs they are most likely well over 50 cal. I cant answer that cause I have never heard of it, but a Mod Choke Smoothbore 12GA for ML needs 710 balls

Hey Dave, shooting a bit low with a shotgun at 25m is normal. The bead sights on most shotguns are zeroed at 100m. The 2" pull right is either your trigger press, you might have too much finger through the trigger guard, or being that you are left handed, your strong hand may be unconsciously pushing the barrel minutely in anticipation of the shot. My sister has the same issue because she is left handed and right eye dominant, if she anticipates the shot she always hits at 3-4 o'clock. Semper Fi

If you put a scope on your H and R like mine the accuracy issue is solved and it's very very nice. I use a nikon slug hunter and with fiocci slugs out of my smooth bore I get 2 inch groups at 100 yards with my ported improved cylender steel choke.

Dave, If all you have is round ball, you can melt it and drip the hot lead into a bucket of water; makes some decent shot in a pinch. Not perfect, and the size varies, but it'll do if you've got nothing else.

Very interesting and fun to say the least, however for the weight of the mold, ladle and file, you could carry quite a few pre-molded round balls. I could see the advantage if you were on the frontier long term, but in modern days with hunting season, it would be pretty unlikely to be hunting big game and small game at the same time. Cool to think about though.
@hartstudebakerkid11 жыл бұрын
Wrong....check your hunting regs.....small game season is open when large game is so the way Dave does it if he sees Forest Grouse he can load for them and have a couple in his game bag and then go back to large game. When I am bow hunting I carry a side arm for bear and a Flue Flue arrow for grouse on my quiver.
@iliveoutside11 жыл бұрын
Might be true in SOME areas but in my state carrying birdshot or rimfire in the field is a violation during our firearms deer season--only slug/buckshot is allowed. You also cant carry a firearm during archery season unless you have a ccw license, and even then pistol cannot be used for dispatching game.
@hartstudebakerkid11 жыл бұрын
Read your regs again. If you have a small game lisence in your possession "they" cant say anything. I never said anything about dispatching game plus dispite what the game laws say open carry is legal doent matter if bow hunting or not and you can have mul;tiple tags so one can hunt deer or elk with a bow and bear, coyote, cougar, racoon, grouse with a firearm.
@iliveoutside11 жыл бұрын
I've hunted for well over 35 years, every state has their own regs and i know mine. What is legal for you is not universal. Good luck with whatever it is you are trying to achieve.
@hartstudebakerkid11 жыл бұрын
If you are only reading the hunting pamplet then you do not you have to actually go to your states code and the federal code also known as CFR and of course the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Federal Law also trumps state law.

So chewed musket balls. Being interested I just did some quick search, it seemed it was dimpled not for aerodynamics but to cause worse wounds to the enemy.

aka, knight50cal here. long time, glad to see the vids are still coming and strong, luv to see just how far you've came since the days of the lowly olé forum page. I dont know if this is one of the methods you guys tried to make shot, but I seem to remember someone explaining to me about dripping molten lead from a distance I can't remember, couldn't have been more than a foot or two, dripping it from a distance into a bucket of water. I've seen some pretty round ball of sadder when it falls into a bucket while soldering copper pipe at work, so in theory it should work for lead as well. actually hope you guys can figure out. it almost has to work. and do you sell the 209 conv for a ss 20ga?

@xzekkx11 жыл бұрын
OK, thank you, I actually just did some research and i'm not affected by the new lead ban. :)
@hartstudebakerkid11 жыл бұрын
I would use choated shot. Choated shot is plated. Some BBs are choated shot as I recall it is Daisey brand BB guns that require it. That whole mess with California is gonna kill most hunting simply because of the idiots that wrote the legislation. You cant hunt with lead but you can still practice. I have made some good varmit loads by cutting up 10-14 gage copper wire.

Alright that might work, Thanks

Another great video, Dave! Makes me want to ditch my pump shot 12ga and get a single shot to give this a go. :D BTW, If you live in a fishing village, the lead-core ropes used as foot ropes on gill nets have little elongated bits of lead in them. When I was a kid I used to use them in my pellet gun...they were a perfect fit! I'm sure they would make good shot for shotguns as well. Oh, and of course there's lead fish line weights and lead cod jiggers as well! All good sources of lead in a pinch. :)

If so how does the powder not fall out the touch hole when you break it open?

You could prime the gun first in this case as the H&R has a cross bar safety mech but the powder is course enough it will not fall through the whole if you are using an Equivelant like Pyrodex

Yes I added black powder to my list 25 years ago. Only problem that I have had was two chambers fireing at the same time with one of my revolvers and I stopped that from happening by using an over the powder wad and an over bullet wad with grease around the edges. I have had revolvers charged for several years.... dropped one in a puddle and still had it fire just fine.
