He motivated me to be better at writing my own songs and definitely think more creatively in general.

ironic that such a driven, focused, productive, and talented person was labeled by the press as voice of the "slacker generation" because he did it his own way, which is how he won total artistic freedom, which nobody else had in those days.

So he finally gets someone to record something and he does this thing, comes up with "Loser" and then he is poo-pooing a recording contract because he doesn't want to be stuck recording what they want. OK I get it, but he had been waiting for so long to get something going and this was it, a notch way up from where he was at. If he wasn't very lucky on "Loser" he would have chosen to be doing what, then? The same thing? And where was he sleeping at night? Who was taking care of him for stability purposes, sleep, food, shower, warmth in the winter? Most artists are desperate for some kind of financial compensation and, yes, the industry hopes they can turn an artist into a sucker awarding them with some compensation in the beginning, but that is because most artists are truly dead broke and desperate to get a recording deal. Beck must have been in a different place, with a roof over his head and the ability to wait it out. Something is very odd with how he came up, finally. I can't imagine having eclectic parents as he did wasn't maybe one of those "secrets" that got him noticed

He was working odd jobs without any expectation to make a living from music, as he explains from about 8min here. Artistic freedom was evidently more important than financial gain, given that he turned down numerous lucrative offers for ads, other deals. Many of the DIY artists he played with and admired then were highly critical of commercial success (including his)... kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5i9kGOCg52NndU
