The horses which, like many other works of art, were looted by the crusaders from Constantinople after the fall of the city in 1204 during the 4th Crusade are considered works of classical antiquity which have even been attributed to Lysippus, the famous sculptor of the 4th century BC.

These horses were part of the Trajan's column (Rome). They were then relocated to the Hippodrome of Constantinople. Then to Venice? Then to Paris and back to Venice.

A city by that name doesn't exist anymore.... As far as I know, Istanbul has not asked for them back.
