Wow, this really put some of the big events in history (not just art history) into context. Thank you again!

That was beautifully put together. I knew little bits and pieces of this, but I never really fully considered the building and art in it's historical context.

You are the very best and the only KZbin video I found talking so clearly and smoothly like a beautiful story about the history of Art in St. Peter's Basilica. I wish there were more like yours.

"Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad." ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Michelangelo also wrote some insightful and tender poems in that time, poor guy. It's always fascinating to learn how the little spotlights on history connect with eachother. Thanks.

By the time of Julius II, Old St. Peter's was dangerously unstable. One of the last people to attempt a restoration on the original structure was Battista Alberti, who basically said that collapse was imminent. You can only patch holes for so long before it's in your best interest to start from scratch.

ps: when you find the time i really hope you'll make a video someday playing Assassins Creed 2 (,brotherhood - rome, revelations - Istanbul, unity - france) It takes place in renaissance Italy (during the Borgias) it's one thing to read about it in books but a whole another to stand infront/top of these architectural miracles in their prime and let the world wash over you. It could be argued it's the closest thing we have to time travel.

the old basilica was falling down on its own. in fact a part of the ceiling fell down and killed the worshippers only a few years earlier. some of the walls were leaning nearly 5 feet from vertical. gangs of rats lived in the wooden roof, dropping you know what on the people below. the old basilica had been neglected for centuries, and was falling down on its own. pulling down the basilica was also necessary since the tomb of St Peter was right in there. no one could think of building a new masterpiece without designing it around that sacred tomb. if it makes you feel better, destruction of the old neglected basilica taught the church to fix and prevent the down fall of the Pantheon. just like NYC--the destruction of the fantastic Pen Station (built on the model of the Bath of Caracalla), save the Grand Central. people in Gotham learned from the neglect and eventual loss of Pen Station.

Hmmm Relevant Topic to modern contemporary discourse would be great if you could Kindly speak or touch on St Peter's Basilica and the catacombs therein plus the culture of venerating and deifying the dead via saint or ancestor worship? More so consequence of forcefully acquiring as alleged bones and bodies of 12 Messianic Jews A.K.A 12 Apostles and using them for various unknown stuffs?? it's said once a priest has been canonized as a ''Saint''. his bones or part of it is ground and used as foundation structure wherein a new church branch is to be built on top which is summeraily all named after him (Dead Saint) another Folk conspiracy theorist or eye witness and active participant also said, the dead, bodies or bones are washed and sent to various cath- olic branches as ''Holy Water'' from Your experience and craft what are implications if aforementioned are true and valid for the people i.e lay members and public thronging place to venerate in such as they are oblivious to far reaching depth and consequences of such?
