Which one do you use in your home studio? Plugin or an amp? Cheap vs Expensive D.I. Box shootout: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6WkmYChjJd5arM

I'm totally in the box so it's plugins here. I just can't work without their flexibility. You can change and tweak tones, switch plugins, work totally on the fly. I consider amps as "wild horses", difficult to tame and master - an art form in itself. Also, as far as sound is concerned and since I'm not a guitar nerd (saying this in the most respecful way), I can hear differences between the two but I don't consider one sounding better than the other. It all depends on what sound you want.

@@HerrNox I agree. Their is a flexibility to plugins that you can't have with the real deal. That being said, I really dig real amps. It's the dimensional aspect (almost like 3D) in the recording, when properly done, that can't seem to be replicated with plugins. I dig both and think that if you work with one or the other then there is no reason to not get great tones.

really good video, thanks. I was wondering if I was doomed with a shitty amp. I'm gonna try plugins now

Plugins are a great way to record at home. If you have a great audio interface with a great high input for direct recording, or if you have a good D.I. box, you will get great results. Recording a real amp is very exciting when you get it right, but also very frustrating when you get it wrong.

Thanks for the video! I have been recording directly for quite a while and I really like it. About what plugin sounds good with single coils: Have you tried Scuffham Amps' S Gear? It sounds awesome out of the box. Check it out!

+Erikson Souza I think that comes with the Slate Everything bundle right? I most likely did try it but I had so many issues with the Slate stuff that I never got to give ot a fair chance. I’ll have to give it another try.

Arksolva Studio it used to come with the bundle, yeah! If you enter my chanel you will likely see many videos where I use it... I think that 90% of the videos I have used it, and I must admit that's the best VST I have ever played!

I prefer a real amp with a good mic in front of it. But running a software sim thru a powered speaker, then micing that, can sound good too. I really don’t like going direct, sounds too sterile, like you’re playing in a vacuum. This goes double for acoustic guitar.

Yeah, a real amp is awesome. I love the sound of a cranked up amp with an SM57 or Aston Origin. I have not tried a virtual amp with a real speaker, I’ll have to try that. Cheers

Arksolva Studio It’s basically like going through a modeling amp. I used to have a Fender Mustang I, and I really liked it. But my favorite setting by far was the Vox AC sim, “British ‘60s”, so I figured I’d just go ahead and get a real AC-15. I sometimes run different amp sims using Bias on my ipad thru my stereo, and even thru the AC-15, recorded with a real mic, it sounds much better than going direct to me. Same with keyboard and drum programs. That little bit of real room ambience the mic picks up really works wonders. 😉

Artamus Sumatra oh, I hear you. The AC sound is fantastic. I’ll see if I can get my hands on a modelling amp at some point. That would be interesting to cover in a video ;)

Arksolva Studio The original Fender Mustang amps are fantastic, I’d easily recommend them. But steer clear of the new Mustang GT amps, they are a huge step down imho. I don’t know what the PTB at Fender were thinking when they replaced the great original ‘Stangs with these duds. 🤪
