I bought this amp about a year and half ago and wish I had seen this video before now! (Especially the other comments about changes folks have made to theirs). Mine was sounding great for about 6 months and then started breaking up, sometimes crakling and popping at very random moments. Finaly found that the power tubes were running very hot and a isht storm of noise would erupt when gently tapped. The amp had alway run very hot around the power tube area of the chasis. Got some new JJ EL84 tubes (old ones from early 2023 were unbranded). Changed tubes and cooled down the bias and it runs cooler and sounds much better. Considering the Jensen P12Q but concerned about the low sensitivity of the Jensens.

Great demo! I've had this for a while and whilst it's a permanent feature of my board, it can be an issue with all the knobs having an effect on the other, so you can take a while to find the things you like.

Buying a Tube15 is a no-brainer. It is just too good to not buy it for the rather low price. Regarding the speakers: the stock 70/80 speaker is far better than his bad reputation, IMHO. Clean sounds I liked better with the stock speaker, compared to the greenback. With overdrive sounds, I think in some settings I like the greenback more, in other settings the stock speaker. With the Red Llama or the Emma pedal, there is an audible difference, but I am not able to say what I prefer, stock or greenback. Both sound good, but slightly different. All in all, the differences were not as big as expected. The differences are audible, but not like a night and day difference, more like an audible small change in tone. Regarding the price for greenback or V30 (new as well as second hand) and the quality of the stock speaker, I think there is no need to replace the stock speaker. Of course, you can replace it, but in most cases I guess the plus in tone is less than expected.

Ah, the age-old debate: stock vs. greenback. It's like choosing between coffee and tea-both have their merits, but it ultimately comes down to personal taste!

@@TheToneLounge The image is right, it is like coffee or tea question. And sometimes I prefer tea and sometimes coffee. As long as you personally like it, all is good.

I'm curious what if you switch the speaker in the HB, whether we can expect change in the sound, in a positive way. 🤔

Curious to know why the NUX tone controls are at 12 o'clock cos from what I understand they are passive "cut only", so default setting would be set to "full" like on the Tim, which sounds brighter and more dynamic in these clips. I do like the smoothness of the NUX at the "darker" setting. Wondering if it sounds punchy and spanky like the Tim if the controls were maxed out
@TheToneLoungeКүн бұрын
From what I've been told, the NUX is based on the Jan Ray, which I've never played. The Jan Ray is said to be like a Timmy. I may have been mistaken in assuming that noon was neutral on the NUX.

@bstozek What you thought was maxed out was actually neutral position. Turning the EQ counter clock wise cuts frequencies. All the way right is flat.

you nailed it, you nailed it!!!!! in my experience go through everything with a third octave equalizer (those with 30 controls) then act on the high frequency low pass filter like 10 kHz if it becomes too muddy. my compliments

The NUX sounds distant dark and even muddy. I should know. I own one!!! I have a NUX Plexi Crunch . A much better investment. A must have if you own a Tele. I also have a NUX 63 Diamond on order. As a VOX AC30-in-a-Box pedal it is indeed not likely to be muddy but nice and brite.

I bought the Timmy today thinking it was going to be the best OD pedal ever. I A/B'd it against my blues driver and found, they both sounded transparent and that they sounded very much a like. I found there was something I liked more from the Boss and will keep. I will return the Timmy. Your video was great and gave me what I needed but I just wanted to see for myself. I have been down the rabbit hole of what is the best OD pedal for a year now and I have purchased so many pedals and I am still back where I started with the BD-2. I still have 2 pedals left to find and try: the Palomar Sound Coyote and MINI by Smallsound/Bigsound. If those can't dethrone my trusted BD-2 then I will stop even trying.

I bought this on a whim and accidentally discovered a brilliant LIVE use for it. I use mine for my solo boost. I have it in the effects loop and have the two mini knobs turned full to the left (off?) and the large white knob full right (on). This gives an incredibly satisfying thickening to my tone whilst adding just enough boost to stand out further lead guitar playing. I’m hooked!

Thanks for the great in-depth review. I agree with pretty much everything you say about the amp. I recently bought an AC15C1 for a specific project and found it to be a good overall amp. But, some aspects I didn't like were that it sounded a little too bright and ice picky and I found the stock reverb to be very tinny. So, like every other piece of gear I own - I made mods. Replaced OEM tubes with JJs, 5751 in V1 and ECC83s in V2 and V3. EL844 power tubes. MOD 8EB2C1B reverb tank. The results were good. The tube compliment mellowed the spikes and just evened out the tone. The 5751 and EL844s are slightly lower gain so if more gain is your objective, this is a no-go. The MOD reverb has a medium decay and is more usable even when fully cranked. Just wanted to share the journey.

WIth a little eq and compression the pathfinder can get even closer. Did you get the drive only with the gain knob or used the boost?

I like more speakers. 4x12s and stacked is incredible sounding but 2x12 is a great compromise like you said with low wattage speakers. That one directional single 12 can get lost on stage real quick.

The cheap overdrive I can’t take off my board is the Caline Enchanted Tone (Dumble ODS tone clone I think?). I use a Vox Silk Drive (Dumble SSS NuTube clone) as my preamp (ampless DI rig) and together they provide such a nice lead tone, I can’t. Just can’t.
