If Disney thinks True Colors is too dark then I don't know what are their thoughts on TMNT 2003 and 2012, yeah True Colors has some dark moments but it isn't as dark as episodes like Same As It Never Was or Insane In The Membrane or Bishop's Gambit from TMNT 2003 or Requiem from TMNT 2012.
