Ampler is an Estonian e-bike brand started in 2014 in a home garage. Now they have become a reputable player in this highly competitive playground.
They don’t have physical stores, because they are selling their e-bikes directly to consumers.
However, they have several showrooms in different cities in Europe.
So I visited one in Tallinn, Estonia to test out their newest eBike - Ampler Axel.
Ampler Axel is a commuter e-bike meant for everyday use. The bicycle is silent and makes the riding effortless.
The bike comes in 2 different frame sizes, so it can fit riders between 172-200cm in height.
So it’s designed for people who want a lightweight electric bike for daily urban commutes
Ampler Axel comes with a custom-made rear hub motor. It can provide 250W and 45 newtons of torque.
The acceleration is really smooth and feels natural. Although it’s a single-gear bike, the first pedal strokes were quite easy.
Since it’s a European e-bike, Ampler Axel doesn’t have a throttle. The motor works only when you are pedaling. The top assisted speed is 25 km/h.
However, it doesn’t mean you can’t ride faster than that. If the speed goes over 25 km/h, the motor just stops assisting you.
One of the coolest features of this ebike is that it don’t look like electric.
The battery is hidden in the frame and it can provide an estimated range of around 50-100 km.
As always, the exact range depends on the weight of the rider, type of terrain, and assistance mode.
Since electric bikes usually ride faster than regular bikes, it definitely needs good stopping power.
Ampler has done here a great job. The Axel comes with quality hydraulic brakes.
I was amazed at how good is the stopping power. At the same time, stopping is really smooth.
Another strong feature of this bike is it doesn’t have a chain. Instead, it has a Gates carbon belt.
Although the belt makes the bike a bit more expensive, it has several advantages:
*The belt is always clean and it doesn’t need any maintenance
*It’s more lightweight than a chain
*It’s Much quieter and
*Belt lasts 4 times longer than chain drives
The frame of the bike is made from aluminum alloy. I like that most of the cabling is internally routed. It makes the overall look of the bike very clean and stylish.
Since the bike weighs just 16 kg, it’s one of the lightest fully-equipped electric bikes on the market.
The geometry of the bike is a great balance between sporty and relaxed. The riding position is less aggressive than Ampler Curt and not so upright as Ampler Stellar.
The Axel is equipped with 27.5-inch wheels. On top of that, there are quality tires made by Continental.
tires are designed for the urban environment. However, they have some thread to provide grip on corners or in wet conditions.
Ampler Axel has one important feature that Ampler’s first-generation bikes didn’t have.
A display is integrated into the frame.
It provides info about current assist mode, battery level, range, and ride statistics.
The display shuts down when you are riding, so you can keep your focus on the road.
To sum it up, I can easily say that I really enjoyed riding with Ampler Axel.
Every bit of the bike is top quality and riding with it feels luxurious and comfortable.
Of course, it all comes with a price. Ampler Axel is not a cheap e-bike.
It costs about €2,800. But considering the fact, that this bike is manufactured in Europe, has high-quality components, and comes with a 2-year warranty, it seems like a good deal.
So if you are looking for a trustworthy city commuter e-bike with great build quality, Ampler Axel might be a good option.

Thank you for this video. I'm still waiting for the delivery of my Curt. Somehow there aren't many videos about the second generation bikes yet. I hope there will be more in the future though.

Merci pour ce test très complet 👍 J'hésite entre le Axel et le Curt. Étant en France 🇨🇵 je ne peux pas les essayer. 🤔 Lequel le conseillez-vous ?

Thank you! I have tried both of them. Curt is with a more aggressive ride position than Axel. Overall, both bikes are of good build quality.

I'm doubting between the Axel and Stout. I really like the Axle more, but the lack of gears makes me doubt a bit. However, going for the Stout (with gears) also means a chain instead of belt :( Especially since it's such a lightweight ebike, makes me wonder what'll happen if I go over the 25 km/h without having gears. Do you have any experience with that? What's the max speed you can still comfortably do on the Axle (above 25)?

I recommend going for a test ride with both of them. Then you can know for sure which one you like more :)

I am not sure which size I should take. As per Ampler I need size M but it seems to be too small for me (185 cm).. which size did you test and how tall you are? Tks
@ElectricWheelers
@ElectricWheelers Ай бұрын
I tested the L size and I am 191 cm. However, these size suggestions are just estimations and if you feel the M is too small, try the L. If possible, test both of them and choose the one that feels more comfortable.

I don't like the sound when you don't move your peddles and the bike is moving. It is so nice that with a belt you don't hear sound.
