'Ram' remains for me the most outstanding album by any ex-Beatle. Sounds as fresh today as it did in 1971. I loved it from day one when I bought it on the day of release and could never understand some of the bad press this received in 1971. It was great to see it being critically re-evaluated beginning with it's CD release in the '90s up to its status today where it is regarded by many as his greatest work.

Ram is great. But I can't deny the greatness of a lot of the work John, George and even Ringo released. Granted none of them were quite to Pauls level musicianship wise as no one on earth was or ever will be, they all put out awesome and timeless stuff... just not at the rate someone like Paul could and also considering that from like Sgt Peppers on most of the big hits were his. But again you can't take away the others contributions. Paul was just more consistent as well as diverse.
@tiestenbosch2 жыл бұрын
@@whichgodofthousandsmeansno5306 I agree! But the ironic thing is that all Beatles got praised for their solo stuff at the beginning, except for Paul. They all wrote he lost his touch. I get the personal choice in your statement (and I do love McCartney's work), but "All Things Must Pass" is probably the best individual "album" of any ex-Beatle. I bought 3 Lennon albums during the day of December 8th 1980 and played them all afternoon (including Double Fantasy, Imagine, and Rock and Roll) until I fell asleep. I had never purchased a Beatle’s solo album up until that time. I was awoken by my grandfather who was watching Monday Night Football. He had never heard of John Lennon until that afternoon when he listen to those albums with me. He came rushing into the room (I was living with him at that time) and said that “John Lennon had been shot”. It was all too surreal and one of the saddest days of my life. I just don’t know what propelled me to buy the albums that day. I was a poor college student but I was compelled to buy them on that day for some reason. The entire family went back into his room & listened to the radio news. My brother is 2 years older than me. He was sitting in a chair and I just crawled in his lap and he held me as I sobbed. He cried. I cried. We were 2 kids whose life’s had been changed and molded for the better by John Lennon grieving that night in small town Tennessee. The world somehow seemed smaller. Here's the problem with saying that Paul McCartney broke up the Beatles; he didn't. The band had, by that time, run its natural course. Everyone else was tired of trying to keep it going; the fact that Paul was the last one to walk out the door and close up shop does not make him a villain. That's a myth perpetrated by Jan Wenner at Rolling Stone, and picked up by the "musical press" elsewhere. Wenner actually had one of his staffers who had written a positive review of McCartney's first album go back and re-write it as a negative one, because "McCartney had to be punsihed." The musical press needed someone to blame for the Beatles not going on forever and ever amen, and McCartney was a convenient scapegoat. This is why anyone who is an enemy of record critics is a friend of mine.

His ability to create melody and then his arrangements are great. His bass playing and voice are unbelievable. He can sing so many styles. Rock n Roll, pop , ballads , as Lennon called it Paul's Granny music lol , and harder edged rock. The only album I ever thought was maybe a miss was in 1986 with his solo Album Press to Play. Only because of the over produced 80s sounds on it. If you stripped it down there is still interesting music on that album though. Paul is just so prolific. Music comes so naturally to him it's like breathing for him. He can hang with greats like Stevie Wonder , Michael Jackson , Elvis Costello , and offcourse John Lennon. I mean Paul could probably work with anyone and produce something worthwhile and interesting. He's about to turn 80 years old and just started touring again. Paul is like in his own category of music. He stands the test of time and has made it through every change in the music industry in every decade since the 1960's ended. Great!

Then he went into gospel but he gave his drums to Steve Kent who took his place in " Sea Level ". I was in a band " Spank " with the last bassist and drummer of Sea Level. The Beatles had three songwriters. So the best of each writer’s songs made it on to the albums. Once they broke up they had to fill out their albums alone. So their lesser songs made it on as well. I’m most familiar with Paul’s post-Beatles work, and I’ve found that he still wrote several great songs per album, just as he had when he was with the Beatles. A couple of comments: Lennon & McCartney together- iron sharpens iron. Linda McCartney: her vocal was key to the sound of Wings. Her singing was unique and fit the music she performed. People will kick dust on her shoes but she is underappreciated for contributing to the sound of Paul McCartney in the 1970's. An underpublicized gem that demonstrates Paul's capacity as an arranger is "Arrow Through Me" on the Back to the Egg LP. The lyrics are somewhat pedestrian but the use of synthesizers & keyboards set to a "catchy" syncopated rhythm led by McCartney's funk bass line showed his experimentation with different sonic combinations. It was a foretaste of his future work with the "Fireman" experimental electronic effort that he focused on in the early 1990's.

@gmb8582 жыл бұрын
@@peterwolf6648 I never found Denny Laine's vocals to be that distinctive. My point, perhaps not clear enough, is that Linda sang on the Wings records. In Paul's catalog, her female voice is the signal that the song was recorded during the Wings era. That in itself makes it distinctive. You're being a little obtuse to think that I was saying that Linda "carried" the vocals in Wings. There is no doubt that Paul was the main focus of lyrics, melody and arrangement in his post Beatles career. To me, that is a given.

The core material had been outlined by the band when they had matured as a unit (also with the bigger tensions). Reduced to a trio, he ended up being the general arranger and try his own way (helped by Laine and Linda). Wings was a real band and the first line up may have been close to confirming it. Paul's name in it did not make it easy unfortunately. And let's be careful with the Beatles' comparison: it's clearly inevitable but it was not at the core vision of Wings, which were never intended to be Beatles 2.0. Paul was simply trying to go on and a band was a good way to relive cooperation/comraderie. He probably also wanted to show that he knew he could be difficult but he didn't mean to be an overbearing musical dictator and was willing to/capable of working with other people (that could help stop his excesses at being himself). Who knows, if McCullough and Seiwell had stayed, stood up to Paul and solved their tensions ...

The opening section of the video was unjust and reflected a limited knowledge of what actually happened prior to 1973. I personally owned both McCartney and Ram. In my humble opinion, Maybe I'm Amazed from the McCartney album is one of the top 10 best Beatles songs before or after the split. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey became a number one hit on the charts; Imagine when first recorded in early seventies only made it to number 3 (after John's death in 1980 it became number 1). Ram reached number 1 in the UK and number 2 in the US, where it spent over five months in the Top 10 and went platinum. Paul was successful prior to 1973.

Yeah You're Right! In The Past. (1963 To 1980) Paul Is Always Been Most Popular Than John That's The Fact. Paul Songs Always Outsold John's Songs. Post Beatle Songs Likes, Imagine, Jealous Guy, Give Peace At Chance, Happy Xmas (War Is Over), Mind Games, Love And Woman Are All Great Songs But People Ignored These Songs None Of These Songs Made It To The Number One. However, When John Lennon Died Popularity Shifted From Paul Towards To John. Today, John Lennon Is The Most Popular Beatle.

Yeah, it's very "70s rock press reviewer" in it's telling of history, which is a bit frustrating. But they are telling a more compelling narrative that way. To exaggerate how well John's albums up to imagine did and downplay the success of Paul's early albums. It's not strictly true but creates a payoff effect. Their second halve was very informed, apart from skipping over some of their meetings and interpersonal stuff, bringing up knowledge that must be from Fred Seaman or Robert Rosen. I assume they had access to the correct facts but decided to omit some parts for dramatic purposes.
@braemtes232 жыл бұрын
@@lennonjamesbebiano9845 I was only pointing out that in that three year period prior to 1973 Paul's music was as successful as the other Beatles. The video acted as if Paul's music during that time was mediocre and did not perform well. I in no way was trying to say Paul was more popular than John or was better or worse than John. They both were and always have been popular and appreciated/loved the world over.

You are dead-on right about his constant apologizing to Yoko. I love the solo Beatles as much as what they did as a band, but you can only take so much reformed male chauvinist John, preachy George and thumbs-up all the way Paul. They were best when they mixed it up, especially when they rocked silly (Move Over Ms. L, Crackerbox Palace and Girls School) . Imagine a Beatles album in the mid 70s with those three tracks plus Goodnight Vienna and Hey Baby on top of that. The Beatles have grown up and are really having a ball.

I have yet to see any band grow so exponentially in quality of song craft and musician ship as The Beatles. It would be quite impossible for the individual members to re-create the same magic. That said the four did go on to give us some fantastic music post Beatles. This was a nice walk-through of Lennon and McCartney's music since. I think the heights of what they achieved together simply will never be replicated and they took it to it's apex. Thankfully the bulk of it holds up and is still wonderful to listen to.

I think this documentary is actually very good, far better than most out there. They clearly have some in depth knowledge of the situation , and have gone to efforts to bring in a mix of views and expertise, this doesn't seem to extend far beyond rock journalist however, and their is a very Jan Wenner-ish vibe to the history they are telling, uncritically of how off the mark Rolling Stone was about some of these albums and taking sides due to personal grievances, but that aside because I understand why. They question the major narratives of Yoko and Paul which is interesting and create a narrative and conclusion that i more or less think is the correct one, if some of the facts presented are a bit smudged. I agree with many of the commenters that they talk down about several good albums and singles for no good reason "everyone thought", they say, I say did they? However i understand they want to create a narrative of rising to the challenge and meeting the critics, it's interesting that they are harsh on John's final albums, which are nice albums with memorable songs (70s critic getting the better of them I suppose). I'd like to add my own gripe. Sometimes they claim to know what John or Paul are thinking. well at least in terms of Wildlife we know what John thought. He told Phil Spector to shut up about Paul because he couldn't even think of the music because everything was so depressing over their business conflict. At around that time he got into a row with Paul in Melody Maker, laying into him for suing the band. Then Paul contacted him and they agreed not to fight in public "It was giving the press too much fun"- John Jan 1972. John then appeared on the Mike Douglas show, was confronted by audience members over the matters and he said he thought Wildlife was better than the two previous albums. Paul was "getting it back". Now you can argue that he is rude about Paul when they are fighting and nice when they have made peace, but there is no indication he was gloating over the success of Imagine, it actually seems that he was truly distressed about the business matters with Paul and saw the album as a reminder of that.

Very well executed! I do think that Lennon is treated more as a supporting character here to McCartney; perhaps 1970-1972 should have been given as much scrutiny as the rest of the decade, and Milk and Honey (which is largely superior to Double Fantasy) getting a little more time. But this works fine as an overview of the peak solo years.

Paul McCartney has mostly been about being a musical showman w/rock n roll roots. Lennon was mainly about rock n roll roots w/a lot of anger, pain, & sadness, as well as a tinge of pop showmanship & sarcasm thrown in. What made the Beatles so incredibly wonderful was the combination of McCartney & Lennon turned loose together to create then, George's impeccable ear, style & range added in & finally Ringo's fantastic & unique drumming style completed the magic of the 4 most talented men of my generation & perhaps of every generation to follow where music is concerned. There has yet to be another group of individuals who have influenced popular music since the 60's. Even to this day, as amazing as so many artists are none have surpassed or even equaled what 4 men created as a group & as individuals. The music of the Beatles is & always will be revered, beloved & honored by virtually everyone in the world who loves music of a certain type. The fab 4 have yet to be replaced or matched. Their music will outlive them generation after generation & they'll be beloved for generations to come. As John once quipped, "Christ!" "We're more popular than Jesus Christ!". Of course, being a naive young man he didn't realize the press would immediately take what he said completely out of context, knowing full well he wasn't a media savvy personality, & use his statement to lambast & humiliate him at every turn. Luckily, John & The Beatles survived the nastiness of the media & some more fair members of the press gave the naive young man an opportunity to explain his off the cuff exclamation, which was in no way meant to disrespect our HF or Christianity. He was certain to apologize to anyone who was offended by the way his comment was presented. A very smart move by Lennon & the media outlet that aired his apology. A very smart move. It made the media that aired the naive young man's declaration seem like assholes & scum trying to take down an innocent, naive young man who's music our teenagers (boys & girls) loved. A young man who's music our soldiers in Viet Nam listened to as they fought our battles over there.

I have a great story about how I became a Paul McCartney fan. I bought a Partridge Family album around 70/71, and though I loved the group, a friend wanted to trade me for this album named RAM which I had never heard of, I was like 10! 😁 Wasn't even into The Beatles at that time, but I made the trade, and absolutely fell in love with that album. To this day it's one of my favorites, and I never understood the bad reviews. For me, that album contained many more top 20 hits than actually saw the charts due to lack of a single release, and radio play. Of the three released singles off the RAM album, one of them was the worst song on the album for me, Eat At Home. Any of the remaining songs would have been better to my ears for a single release. The album introduced me to who I consider to be the greatest songwriter of all time. I have to wonder how many of the Beatles songs were actually just McCartney without much input from John. No disrespect to John as he did have some wonderful hits, and I would love to have seen his output had he not been tragically murdered. 👍✌ P.S. With all due credit to John's input musically, I do wish Paul would state the truth about who actually wrote the majority of the songs. Lennon had some great hits, but I see McCartney's writing skills superior to Johns, and I wish he would take the credit deserved by stating the truth. 👍✌

Well when they met Paul played twenty flight rock on his guitar complete with the riffs, and John was amazed and took him on in the Quarrymen band. Perhaps an early indication. But Lennon had a good ear for lyrics and melodies and harmony as well...it was a matter of who wanted to work the hardest, peronal problems, etc. Especially toward the last 3 years of the Beatles. Poor George Harrison, they left him out of this entirely...he was the first Beatle to have a big solo success with All Things Must Pass, and they totally ignored him. That sucks. To me, an ignorant travesty.

The problem with this early narrative about Macca's first 2 albums and Lennon's first 2 solo efforts, contrary to what the commenters are saying, Ram and McCartney outsold Plastic Ono Band and Imagine. POB peaked at #6 in the US and #8 in the UK and sold 500K copies in the US (gold). Imagine is now double platinum (2M) and peaked at #1 everywhere. By contrast McCartney peaked at #1 in the US and#2 in the UK and was double platinum (2M) and Ram peaked at #2 in the US and #1 in UK and was platinum in sales (1M). So clearly sales and the public viewed both favorably if not Paul's output more so. The third album for both sucked. And let's be honest not every song on those first 2 albums was a winner for either man. But to say Paul struggled while John was having genius output is ignoring reality

The video does give the wrong impression by saying he struggled given that those first two albums did sell very sell. The McCartney album would have benefited a lot sales wise because it came out so soon after The Beatles broke up and Paul announced it with a q&a insert with the album so the publicity would have helped it. It came out a month before Let it Be. Plastic Ono Band didn't have any hit singles and McCartney had Maybe I'm Amazed which was a far better song than anything on McCartney (although I still like the album but it does sound unfinished). Perhaps if Lennon's album had been called "Lennon" it might have sold more. Plus perhaps people were willing to buy McCartney because they trusted that anything Paul would put out would be great whereas John might have lost some of that goodwill by putting out those three unimpressive albums with Yoko like Two Virgin's so with a Lennon album people might have been more wary. Plus Paul was more popular with female fans.

You think the world would have enough of Paul McCartney...but I look around the world and see it isn't so... Oh God no ..but Paul wants to fill the world with Paul McCartney, and what's wrong with that...he still makes the dough

@@mikesyverson584 I rather hear 10 hours of Paul's worst crap than to hear 10 seconds of Yoko opening her mouth, but to each their own I guess.

Paul's 1st solo album is genius!

I agree! What is awesome is that he played all the instruments on the album! Now that was encouragement for me! Years later I bought Tascam 4 track cassette recorder. with this machine, I became a one man band. I was in a band but we broke up. I was able to record Guitar, Bass, Drums and bounce them down to ONE track. That freed up tracks so now I can lay down vocals and keyboards! This is what Paul did with his machine. Although his was a Studer 4 Track reel to reel, we accomplished the same.

It's great except for that awful 10 minute drum solo at the end

I bought Red Rose Speedway when it came out! I’ve always liked it , thought not quite as good as McCartnry & Ram or some of the later Wings albums , but I still like and enjoy it!

Little Lamb/Dragonfly is brilliant.

Those music critics are stupid. They don't even have 2% of McCartney's talent. In the early 70's Paul was at his peak: McCartney, Ram, Red Rose Speedway, Band On The Run...

@@hw343434 It's a great album and it grows with each listen. But maybe it is not for first listners as McCartney I. You should check out the 2018 remaster. And if you're interested, check the deluxe edition, cause at the time (1973) it was meant to be a double album, but for some reason it was released a single version. The deluxe edition shows the double album, that should have been released in 1973.

Critics have 0% talent, otherwise they'd write one or two odd songs
