Ampro 20 mobile Whip review and on air test

In this weeks video I'm going to look at the ampro 20 mobile whip antenna and mount it on my bike to see if its any good . I'm going mobile with the ampro antenna and the 817 QRP radio to try and make contacts on the 20m band
Are these antennas any good? lets find out
Equipment used :-
Ampro 20m antenna
Yaesu FT817 (not ND model) QRP radio
5amp 3s lipo battery
Push bike with ground plane mounted on it

Absolutely loving 20 , 40 and 80 metre Ampros , delighted to have worked West Coast couple of hours ago on 20 metres with 10 watts . Cracking little mono banders for the money .73s

Yesterday I worked a VK station in Perth, Australia from Aberdeen, Scotland on 40m FT8 using 50W with the Ampro antenna on the roof of the car. So they definitely have something to offer! (PS I was not in the car!)

ive heard of dipole mounted lower than 1/2 wave height would only radiate straight upward. how is this possible for such a low mounted whip to F hop?

Nice shout stateside 5w QRP.... Did same with an MFJ 1 meter horizontal loop at 10ft agl... some kick out of it using 5w out.

Kathy Hendrix on the back of the bike there’s a ground plane which is mounted to the bike rack I just used that no counterpoise

I’m just using a drone battery 3s 11.1v lipo it’s a turnagy 5mah

@@northwestmorphstony9975 running about 5w you can easily get a few hours out of it. If your just listening your get more . You could take 2 battery’s with you and you should be good to go all afternoon

What kind of radials/counterpoise did you use?

At the back of the bike is a CB mirror mount all i do is plug in the antenna i want to use CB/ham and put the cable into the radio then i place the bike stand in the grass and its good to go

@@2j4ez So I guess the metal frame of the bike is good enough ground/counterpoise? Great! I want to mount an antenna on my motor scooter and was concerned whether the metal of the chassis and motor would be adequate. So I guess you answered my question. SV0SGS

Hi it needs to be grounded. on the back of the bike I’ve got a mirror mount with a ground plane. You could also use a mag mount on a biscuit tin which should also ground it out

@@geoffwilliams6013 you can stick it on a copper rod with a Cb mirror mount I’ve done it with my spx100 antenna which I’ve now managed to get working because of the copper rod

@@union310 you would prob need to ground it for it to work as my bike has a ground plane on it. Ive used a copper rod to ground antennas out have a look at the spx 100 antenna on my channel
