The reason that Arizona was so mad at Callie was because Callie promised her that she wouldn’t cut off her leg, but once the infection got so bad, she didn’t have a choice and broke her promise to Arizona.

Adding to this she also believes that because Callie is an orthopaedic surgeon and it was her wife that made the decision on her behalf, that Callie was the surgeon that performed the surgery. Callie does not clear this up as she believed it may as well have been her that used the saw to cut off her leg as it was her decision. After many seasons of learning to live with her leg and finally coming to forgive Callie, she discovers that her friend that she taught throughout the show, Alex (the man that laughs with her on the floor of the operating room), was actually the surgeon that performed the cut. It has been a while since I saw these seasons, however, so I may be slightly wrong in specifics, so nobody come for me haha.

As an amputee also, car accident. My leg was infected. I had no choice I was told if I didn't choose amputation I would die. Watching this broke me. I was very early in my recovery still in the hospital. Watching her on the floor in the shower I've been in that place of despair. Loss, anguish. I received a settlement the lawyer joked too bad it wasn't a Pepsi Truck. I overcame my amputation I learned to walk, I regained a new normal. But the loss will always be with you. My husband dealt with my accident by having an affair. I always thought something like that would be the end-all I couldn't come back from but going through what I have taught me to be stronger. For that I am thankful. Amazing video ❤❤I cried

Arizona is my favorite Grey's character. Her anger towards Callie was because Callie promised her that she wouldn't let anyone cut her leg off. Towards the end of Arizona being on the show it is like the writers forgot she was an amputee. It was never addressed and there were many scenes where the camera panned down and we could clearly see Arizona with two legs.

There are two clips that you missed that would be really interesting. One is Arizona a little while after her amputation. She is sitting on the floor and has a long mirror. She is basically mirroring her "good leg". And she spends hours just sitting there watching her two legs. In another she has phantom limp pain during surgery so in order to get her mind straight she asked that someone stab her fake leg. In the scene with the little girl patient later in the scene Arizona and the father step out of the room. There the father says that he's not really sure and that he's worried. Arizona tells him that she'll be much happier if she's not in pain. Then he tells to Arizona ''This is really hard... you can't understand''. To that Arizona says actually i do and she shows him her prosthetic leg. The father is shocked cause he's known Arizona for over a year and he tells her that all this time he hasn't noticed anything. And that converstion gives him some hope that his daughter will be fine. They also did really good on how her relationship with her wife was affected. Arizona made Callie promise that she wouldn't amputate. But her infection got really bad that Callie broke her promise. So in addition to the amputation Arizona was really mad at Callie for breaking her promise. The one who amputated her leg was her really close friend Alex but they didn't tell Arizona that it was him. So years later Arizona finds out that it was Alex and she goes to Callie and she asks why didn't you tell me that Alex amputated my leg? And then Callie says "Cause i wanted you to have someone that you didn't hate"... UHHH this was such a great response.

There was also the part where Arizona broke her primary prosthetic and had to use her old one and ended up having it squeak for 90% of the episode and that helped her come to terms with her situation a lot.

The mirror scene is referring to "mirror therapy" , Wich is used to trick the brain and try to attenuate phantom pain. But it doesn't work on everyone

Yes exactly what I was going to say. Callow loved her SO much and was SO hurt herself losing her best friend and having to choose to amputate her wife's leg to save her life. She also wanted her to have Alex to be their for her. Grey's Anatomy is my favourite show. I can't wait for season 16 to come onto Netflix in Canada.

On a totally different note. I knew a girl who got meningitis and had to have both legs amputated when she was 7. One above and one below the knee. She now drives has a child and has a full time job. I just wanted to share a nice story with anyone who is going through this. There is hope and it is possible to recover as Jo has shown. So good luck to anyone who is going through this. You got this. Your comment reminded me of when I was around for or five and there was a little boy about two years old and he got meningitis and had all four limbs amputated. He would ride around on a skateboard. I was sad that he was sick but I honestly had no idea wtf was going on and I was worried they were going to take my arms and legs next.

Not an amputee, but from an outsiders point of view I always thought they did a good job portraying it in the show initially, but then in later seasons it is never even mentioned, she walks and stands and runs absolutely perfectly etc. and I personally felt like it was inaccurate? I know it is in part due to the production costs needed to "take away" her leg in scenes or how it isn't really "relevant" to the plot but it just seems like such a big part of her life, and also such a pivotal time for her character and for it to never be mentioned or alluded to ever again seemed annoying to me.

My dad is an amputee. And therefore i know some people with prosthetic legs. And you will be amazed at how good those legs are nowadays with a computerknee in it, that knows when you walk the stairs and adjust accordingly. It has a cyclemode and it is possible to get a skiingmode. So it is possible you wont notice it at all if someone walks with prostethics. Also it becomes part of everydaylife when everything works there is nothing to talk about and the subject isnt talked about alot. But i agree sometimes i think the writers forgot about it completely ;) but even then pretty accurate.

In the scene when Arizona slams the door she was waiting on a journal from the hospital that never came. It was a way to get her out of the apartment. So at first she was angry, but then she went over to the hospital.

This is a particularly well-written and authentic storyline of Grey's, one of the stories that got me really into the show. My friend is an upper limb amputee and I remember talking to him about it when it aired. You should definitely do Stronger - I'd be interested to see what accuracy grade you give it!

Arizona and a bunch of the other Dr's were in a plane crash, which is why she lost her leg. When Callie was talking about how Sofia lost a parent she was talking about her father who died from his injuries after being put in a medically induced coma. When the plane crash happened they were in the woods for a very long time and I think bugs got into Arizona's leg and that's why the infection was so bad.

The writing on Grey’s is so good! I’ve had something akin to phantom limb without losing a limb. I only knew that after seeing a stunning exhibition at the science museum in London where a photographer worked with amputees to depict their phantom limbs as they experience them. Some were bigger or smaller, had sections missing, and such. I had a motorcycle accident that left me with nerve damage in my lower left leg. For months it felt like it was maybe two inches wider in about a six inch section of my leg. It hurt a lot in places where there was no leg. I also had weird sensation like water dripping onto the skin. It’s now mapping accurately to its meat borders and the water drips no more. Over the first maybe even 10 years it changed constantly. I regained some sensation and can just about distinguish hot and cold. It’s still pretty sore and sensitive and very scarred and I’ve lost some muscle where I’m no longer able to engage it properly. But functionally it’s pretty good. Though, it’s still not my old leg. I’ve had to work hard to accept my injury and having my wife touch it properly for the first time has recently been an important part of that. We’ve been together 11 years and my accident was more than 21 years ago! My point is that it takes as long as it takes. You will probably find the nerves continue to recover and remap over years rather than months and that might equate to gradual change or step changes - it’s hard to predict.

Not a limb or even a significant chunk of meat from a leg. But I had a pretty bad bicycle wreck as a kid, and it tore up one of my fingers pretty bad. So bad a chunk of the skin and muscle on the side has to be cut off. I get phantom itches in that small missing chunk of finger. I can't imagine how bad it is for people with larger chunks taken off.

I deal with chronic pain (fibromyalgia) every single day. It hurts to stand in place, to walk too far, to lay down and sleep, to drive a car for too long. I can't work a normal job. Sometimes I get the (fibro fog) and can't think clearly. I wouldn't wish pain on anyone. Thank you for sharing your journey. I'm still trying to pursue my dreams in writing books (fiction) but I've learned to not get frustrated at myself when I'm not able to do what I once could.

That was funny cause my coach thought I tore something, I actually fell down cause I was shifting my weight. I just popped it back in and basically jumped up but everyone watching clapped for me. So not related to amputations, but kind of related to that last scene when Arizona falls down. One of my good friends is a recovered (recovering? He still has some issues from his injury.) paraplegic. So we were on my best friend's bachelor party and walking down to go check out a museum that we thought would be fun to check out (it was closed that day, oops) and the sidewalk was a bit uneven. So James, the paraplegic, was able to walk again and was bringing up the rear because we were a little bit faster than him but he'd catch up at crosswalks. So we all stumbled on this slightly uneven bit of sidewalk but managed to get our feet back underneath us in time to avoid falling, right up until James got to that bit of uneven sidewalk that he'd watched all of us stumble on, he couldn't quite get his feet underneath him again fast enough and he fell flat on his face. What followed was possibly the loudest silence I have ever experienced as we were waiting to see if James was okay and slightly before everyone else I realised that he was fine and piped up "first day with the new legs, James?" Well needless to say everyone turned and glared at me until James started laughing his ass off and said "yeah clearly I need to get them in for an alignment."

I started watching this video before I needed to get ready to visit a friend. Yesterday was probably the scariest moment in my life I attempted suicide and I opted for voluntary treatment so I'm fixing my place, my place in this world because I lost something, a part of myself in my life that I didn't know happened. I came across this video and I just see your strength. I've been dealing with horrible kidney problems for 3 years on top of a car accident 4 years ago and escaping an abusive father 6 years ago. I really like what you said about elective amputations and the important software freedom. I’ve spent the last 14 years in chronic back pain after a failed scoliosis surgery and 4 additional spinal surgeries. It’s also caused pain and movement issues with my shoulders. I’ve always said if it weren’t my spine, something kinda unamputatable 🤣 I’d of had it done years ago if it meant the pain might go. But hay ho the pain bus continues. Great video.

Great video😍 and it made me realise that when it comes to disability, I can't think about any film or tv series showing the characters dealing with MS. Maybe that's why people know nothing about it, only misconceptions and rumors. As you have said in a video before, people can see you are missing a leg and when it comes to me and MS people just see me walking funny and it's humiliating as hell.

I had top surgery a month ago and during this video I found out why I felt so irritated when some people were treating it as an aputation. Because on one side, I couldn't separate reality from the negative connotation the word amputation has, specially over gender-affirming surgeries; I now realise an amputation can mean freedom too. And on the other, I couldn't draw a parallel between trans and amputee experiences until now: the insecurities you talked about in your video, about feeling unattractive, and being pestered with unwanted attention and invasive questions, remind me a lot of the trans experience - specially when you're "visibly" trans, like when you have scars. I'm not saying we have the same struggles, but I think it's helpful to draw parallels we can relate to, and build solidarity between communities. All of this to say: great video! I found it really helpful and unexpectedly therapeutic.

the context behind the clip at 9:25 is that another doctor told her an intern would drop off some x-rays at her door, so she had to try and walk to the door which took a lot of effort but when she saw nothing was there she was pissed at having gone all that way for nothing.

Something I found difficult in watching this was the disregard for consent. She said not to touch her, and Callie (guessing at spelling) lifted her into the shower. She said not to touch the leg, and that was completely ignored. Having your boundaries respected, especially when you're feeling vulnerable, is really important. Building that trust often leads to folks asking for help comfortably faster.

Callie lifted her into the shower because she fired the home health nurse and urinated on herself. She did not tough her leg in the hospital scene until Arizona gave consent. If you watch the whole part of the series, you would see that Callie tried really hard to respect Arizona's boundaries, but sometime Arizona would need help and not know how to ask or accept if.

I'm pretty solidly part of the disabled community in my city and this just didn't fit with the preferences I've heard and hold myself. Maybe the rest of the series paints things in a different light, but these few moments didn't feel right when singled out.

They actually address the fact thar Callie was an orthopedic surgeon but she could not help Arizona because Arizona was her wife and did not feel comfortable with it. I thought they a good job with this part of the series, even if some it does get a little ridicules.

I came across this video because of watching other reaction videos to Grey's Anatomy, but I am so thankful to have seen this one. I have a family member that is an amputee. She seldom wants to burden others with her pain or struggles so I have never really known how hard the process must have been . Hearing from another amputee about things like phantom pain and falling gives me a better insight into what she may be going through. Thank you!

As a bilateral below knee amputee, this video hit me hard a few times. My wife of four years left me after my first amputation and I did my second amputation by myself two years later. I have lived through the rage and the feeling of being a burden and it is the hardest battle of all. The physical pain was bad but the battle in my head was and is the worst. I am one month post op from my second amputation and I have learned so much from other and to be gracious of help instead of trying to just prove everyone wrong. Thank you for making this video and letting us all know that it is okay to not be okay....as long as we don’t stay there.

15:00 I recommended a pin suspension. Aside from being more comfortable, it is more convenient because you can put your leg on and off without having to take your pants off. In the end, you have to do what is right for you. Pins aren't for everyone, but I've used both vacuum and pin and I greatly prefer pin.

As a teen who has several chronic diseases, I can say that it also has its good sides that amputee is so obvious. Most of the times people don't take my pain serious, I look like a healthy 15 year old girl, why should I have pain? It's hard to live a life where people often expect you to do things like you are healthy, while you're not. So your amputee is obvious, you don't need to tell people over and over that it is real. They can see how real it is. Maybe they underestimate it, but they see it. As someone with invisible pain, sometimes I wish that people could see it....

I’m also a young person with chronic diseases. Being young often makes it worse, as people assume that you “should” be able to do things. Our bodies aren’t healthy or “normal”, personally my body is very similar to that of an older person- I struggle with a lot of the tasks they do, and have similar pain and what not. But because I look young and healthy, people don’t get it.

That was what annoyed me the most during covid. I myself do not have a chronic disease but my sister does. She got vaccinated and her booster but now has long covid and a new flare up of her illness, which makes me so worried and angry for her. But since she doesn't look it, many don't realise it. So I guess, particularly in regards to covid,I always thought it's just so stupid when some say that young people don't need to worry about it.

I was diagnosed with JRA when I was 15 years old, and that bit where you talk about asking for help or admitting that you can’t do things on your own is something I talk about with people all the time. At first it was really hard, but in the end learning that it’s ok to ask for help when you need it is one of the “good things” to come out of this for me. It was incredibly hard to learn though as a teenager just beginning to experience independence, but it ended up being the perfect time to learn that lesson.

So I'm not an amputee, but as someone who has struggled for half of my life with a neurological condition which affects the muscles and feeling in my legs and affects my walking, I found myself relating to almost everything you said in this video. From the insecurities in myself and how I believe others view me, to not wanting to be a burden on others so avoiding situations where I feel I might be and not wanting to ask for help, and even through to hating stand-up meetings at work and feeling awkward about being the only one sitting in a room full of standers who don't know why I'm sitting. Actually hearing you say all these things out loud helped me understand some of the things I've felt over the years and have never fully addressed or come to terms with in my own head due to not having people around me who can relate to those feelings, so I just wanted to thank you so much for that. If you’re looking for more shows that have amputee characters, RWBY is a 3d animated show, and a big part of volume 4 is a main character’s PTSD after losing her arm and her adjustment to that. There’s a few other amputees in the show as well, but hers is the one that’s dived into emotionally.

I was injured in 2008, but my bk amputation was in 2015. I also feel as if I still have my leg. I just found your channel and I’m looking forward to watching all your videos and comparing notes. Congratulations on getting off opioids. Unfortunately I have to take them for another condition. I had some friend over for a social distance party and I told my mom oh I better, but on my leg. She did understand why, but you nailed. To not have it covered would feel weird.

Boy did this bring back memories some good and some very bad. As a bilateral below knee I’ve had all of the issues in this program. One that really sticks out is when I fell in the bathroom and my wife and son were in the next room. My son jumped up to help me and my wife immediately told him to leave me alone, “he has to learn to do this himself” and she was absolutely right. I lost my legs after 37 operations (both legs), some were minor, I&D, incision and drainage, and some were major. All of us are different and don’t have all the problems and some do. I enjoyed your take on this episode and would like to see more, but not many programs have at its theme amputation.

I was hoping they showed some other scenes that were very important to her amputation journey. Her physical therapy journey, more of her anger toward Callie when she thought that she was the one that cut off her leg, her first time going out in public with her prosthetic, and more of her journey with phantom limb pain. You should watch that journey. The accident is on season 8 episode 24 and it goes from there.

There's a German show called "In aller Freundschaft - Die jungen Ärzte". There is a character (Ben Ahlbeck) losing part of his leg and not knowing how to deal with it too. He lost it after an accident. PS: There are also some KZbin videos about it.

I became a TRIPLE AMPUTEE through technically no fault of my own, but sort of because my body did it, back in 2015. I had 3 choices and they were all ... crap... but I made the one the kept me alive... struggle every day finding reasons why I bother.. But I was alone. No bf. no kids and I still have no family of MY OWN or that support that I’d love to have like I know every single friend of mine has-/ and I’m so glad they have it to be honest. I am able bodied but have known a few amputees in my lifetime. I will tell you the stories of 1 of them. The first is kind of cute and funny if you knew the people involved. This was in the late 60’s, the gentleman was an avid, avid curler who had a bonspiel coming up in a week or two. Now curling and a very sore foot do not mix. Bill went to see his doctor where was told his big toe was very badly infected. He was also told it was imperative that he stay off that foot or things would get worse. Did I mention he was a very avid curler, well, Bill went curling instead of following Dr’s orders. Needless to say, the prediction of the condition worsening came true to the point where he was told he would lose the leg below the knee. All he was concerned about was could he get the foot back so he could get it stuffed and turned into a cribbage board. You see, besides curling, his and the family’s other passion was cribbage. One night shortly after he came home from the hospital, everyone had gone to bed. He didn’t have his leg yet and was sleeping in the living room as their house was a 2 story. He woke up in the middle of the night needing to use the bathroom, forgetting he didn’t have two legs, he got up and promptly went down on the residual limb and screamed in pain. His wife came running and fell down the stairs. She started screaming like a banshee, they had their 5 kids living in the house with them and not one of them heard a thing. So Bill and his wife Bea spent all night writhing and screaming in pain (Bea had broken her leg) and had to wait for one of the kids to call 911. Bill was in the airforce reserves with my dad. I will leave the stories of my mum and another friend for another time as this got a little longer than I had intended. You really would have had to have known the family to see the humour in the last part of the story.

I have not lost a leg or limb...i did however go through being in nursing school and working to being hit with acute reoccurring pancreatitis. Then chronic pancreatitis. It was really hard accepting the fact i needed a GJ, which is not just dealing with a tube, it is dealing with distention, and dealing with it showing through my shirt, and those times it leaks. It is a bit embarrassing like when our new neighbor who knew a little about my condition was over and i was drinking grape juice and my tube leaked, thankfully that doesn’t happen too often none the less when it does its embarrassing. She said “is that?!? I said “yep sprung a leak.” Its really hard for ppl to understand what I go through. i will never forget the time I was in the hospital and when my pancreatic doctor rounded he had a student with him. He said “teach my student.” He knew i would totally be game. I lifted my shirt and said “this is NOT sexy.” I loved your review so much. TY so much. So very interesting. I love learning and understanding better, thank you so much especially for pushing through when it was tough.
