Thanks for sharing. My daughter lives in Vancouver and works as a prothetic technician. Very cool to see how the socket is made and what her job actually entails. I am in the process of making a final decision about having my left leg amputated below the knee (long story). The injury is what got my daughter interested in the field and led to her going to George Brown College in Toronto after she completed her B.Kin (Science) degree! Life takes you in interesting and unexpected directions for sure. I have been using your videos as an educational tool for myself and to help me with my decision. Thanks for all you are doing!

Thank you so much for posting your journey, Christina! I just found your channel today & have learned so much from you already. I am a clinical massage therapist and currently working on a degree in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training. My dream is to combine my kinesiology geekdom with my passion for working with folks who are marginalized (like chronic substance users, those experiencing homelessness, people with spinal cord injury, and amputees). It's refreshing to see a medical and non-sappy perspective related to amputation. Best wishes.

The sole that comes with a Flex Run is a p.o.s. Soon as you get it go to a local shoe repair shop and get them to put a decent sole on it. I've got a Vibram Sierra on mine, and it's amazing. The stock one came apart within literally the first week, but I've had the Sierra for 5 months now, and it is still great.

Yeh, I didn't have a problem with the traction, but it was made of such a poor quality rubber. My prosthetist even told me when I decided on it I'd probably have to replace it pretty fast. It's a good thing I tested it out for a few days on road before I used it for what I got it, which was paintball. As far as the Flex Run itself goes, oh my god I love it. I tried out the Catapult first, but it felt really weird. In reply to your earlier comment about it being easy to run with a walking foot, it is indeed easy to do over level ground, but try running through the woods sometime with a walking foot. It's so hard to do. I can't count the number of times I fell trying to sprint/jump/climb through the woods before I got a Flex Run.

It looks like your check socket was pulled out of thermolyn, is that correct? Whatever the material is, they use a very large piece of it to blister form your socket. Not that it's wrong or bad, it's just different from what the lab I work in does, any info would be greatly appreciated, I love your videos!

How do you get ones insurance to pay for a leg that you can run in? Once again I have been sick since I was around 3 years old and haven't been able to run since about that time. Now that my right leg is gone up to my thigh I was hoping to get a running leg so I can learn how to run again.

Do you know if there is a minimum length of residual limb they can use with a leg like that? Mine is really short and necessarily has some slop fore and aft. Have fun with that.
@AmputeeOT
@AmputeeOT 11 жыл бұрын
I don't know what the min length is, but I have seen some people with *really* short BK's use running legs. In fact, someone I know chose a modified cheetah leg with a heel as her regular walking leg because her limb was so short she had a hard time controlling a prosthetic leg with a shoe because the shoe created this heavy fulcrum at the end. So... my guess is that a running leg for a short residual limb would be awesome, and possibly easier to use than your regular walking leg.

What is the best criteria to ask a prosthetis ? It appears MOST of the prosthetic companies deal with couch potatoes. I've had nothing but problems with my leg since I got in 10 months ago. ( One blister after another )

Hows walking with a running leg? would someone be okay with using it on a daily basis?
@pioneerdc4419
@pioneerdc4419 9 жыл бұрын
+Nuclearkiwi2 Late reply, but typically you wouldn't because running legs do not have a heel. A unilateral amputee might be able to get away with it but a bilateral would not want to walk around without heels all day, it would just be hard to balance.

Can someone with a prosthesis like this run on uneven, natural ground like on hills and through forests alright? I live in New Zealand, and the entire country is hill after hill after hill, and my favourite places to run were always through the parks and forests.

This may seem ignorant but I'm just wondering how come people don't just use a running blade as an every day leg? could someone do so if they wanted to?
@FoolishDoug
@FoolishDoug 10 жыл бұрын
I am not an amputee, or a technician who makes these legs, this is observation on my part. The running blade is designed to have a spring-like feature and placed so it feels like you're springing off the ball of your feet. In order to provide that capability the running leg has to be set slightly taller because of the design. If it were used as an everyday walking leg the residual limb would suffer from being forced up all day by the running leg's springy nature and it would mess up normal walking gait, more stress for both limbs and your back. Since the running leg seems to only compress correctly when you are running and putting a fair amount of force on it. If the person was a double leg amputee, it might not be that big of a deal and could get away with it much easier. But it looks like the balance would get a little wonky with the curve of the running blade, only my opinion.

For some people, a more anatomical appearance is important. One might not feel comfortable wearing a running leg on a first date, for example. Also, the ability to wear shoes is helpful; it would be unsafe and messy to wear the running leg in snow or mud, and then into the house. Finally, the running leg has to be quite stiff to accept the high loading forces on impact (something like 4x bodyweight). The forces aren't as high in normal walking, so the leg would feel really stiff and too tall. Much better to have an everyday limb and an activity-specific limb.

So...is your walking leg totally incapable of running?
@AmputeeOT
@AmputeeOT 11 жыл бұрын
Actually you can run on a walking leg just fine, but if you're serious about running, a running leg is easier to run on than a walking leg. I have already run a few 5k's in my walking leg and run a couple of miles on my treadmill a few times a week.
