AMRIT UDYAN, formerly known as the MUGHAL GARDENS, is part of the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, India. The garden is a blend of Mughal and English landscaping styles, spread over 15 acres. It was designed by EDWIN LUTYENS in the 1920s when he was designing the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India.
The garden was inspired by the Mughal gardens of Kashmir, the Taj Mahal, and Persian gardens. It features a variety of plants, including both native and exotic species, and is particularly famous for its seasonal flowers, including roses and tulips, as well as fountains, water channels, and terraces.
In 2023, the garden was renamed Amrit Udyan as part of the government's larger initiative to shed colonial names and mark India’s 75 years of independence, celebrated as the AZADI KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV. "Amrit" symbolizes the concept of nectar, reflecting the garden’s serene and timeless beauty.
