We hope you enjoy this DIY Amsterdam food tour with a local!
Amsterdam is basically a second home for Gordon. Both of his parents from here and a lot of his family still lives in The Netherlands, so we received a lot of insider tips!
It was so fun and special to film this Amsterdam food tour, walk around one of favorite cities in the world and to try all the delicious Dutch foods! We hope you enjoy the video, and learning a little bit about G and about Dutch culture in general though our eyes :)
Thanks so much for watching and for supporting our little channel. It means the world to us ❤️
See you guys next Saturday. It's time for a new travel series!
XO,
Aimara & Gordon

Your vids are well done, etc. Technically better than most. Thnx Fun for tourists, sure. ✅ But do you even believe we Dutch really eat this "Dutch" stereotyped street food? Take a look around you at the vendors, it's tourists' food mainly. Just your first 2 items are laughable... eating a cheese sandwich is common in many other countries, innit? And that exotic Dutch 'saucijzenbroodje' you're eating, oozing with saturated fat but minimal nutrition value ... take it to England and it's not Dutch, it's just a 'sausage roll' Then take it to Australia and "It's just a bloody sausage roll, mate! Ya got any tomato sauce? Yum! " There they are as common as Aussie meat pies and kangaroos! Get real 🤣😂

@@ervie60 LOL. Nice. Go ahead, enjoy being nasty and shooting the messenger. I can take it. 🤣 Leuk man. Play the man and not the ball Haha! But you can't deny what I say about cheese sandwiches and sausage rolls. Perfectly true. You did ask what we thought about the video? Sucses! X PS I'm just another Dutch citizen, born of Dutch parents above ground in Bergen op Zoom (no opal mine, unfortunately) and have lived in de Pijp, Amsterdam, for decades. I think maybe you should get out a bit more, see the cheese sandwiches for yourself.

One of the best food tastings in Amsterdam I have seen on KZbin. Lived most of my life in Amsterdam, now expat in Athens and you really showed a lot of the real stuff. However, besides brodjes kaas the Dutch eat many other things in the morning, like pindakaas (peanut butter) and hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles). Ossenworst is originally brought to the Netherlands by Jews, like Pekelvlees (kind of pastrami)

The fact that Indonesian food is such an important part of the cuisine there and describing the rijstaffel.. Broodje Kaas: (and yes, Kaas is with a capital K, One hill I will die on) I don't eat it every day anymore but yes, absolutely a staple of Dutch food. Personally I rather have the "Tosti", the Dutch variant of the grilled cheese sandwich Saucijzenbroodje: Perfect for when you are traveling by train. A coffee and Saucijzenbroodje from Kiosk is always a winner while watching the cows roll by. Stroopwafel: It is actually one wafer split in two. The "stroop is a syrup made from beetsugar based molasses, brown caster sugar (called basterd zuiker in Dutch) and real butter (called Roomboter in Dutch). For tourists taking a package with them back home. Make a big mug of thee (or coffee) and place your stroopwafel on top as a lid and keep it there for about two minutes. The wafer and stroop will slightly warm up making the cookie softer and more delicious. Poffertjes: The man was correct, you eat them with butter and sugar, all the other "flavors" are purely for tourists. This is also true for the different types of Stroopwafel.. most Dutch will take them just naturel and warm tyvm. van Dobben, famous for their Kroketten and bitterballen. Their biggest competitor is probably Kwekkeboom which also hails from Amsterdam. I went to school in de Jordaan, partime SVH school at Elandsgracht (school for cooks, waiters and everyhting related to the hospitality industry) Biterballen (plural), not Bitterbaalen ;) I bet those are from van Dobben heheheh. And yes, a Bitterbal (singular) and a Kroket are basically the same thing. One is a one bite version (well maybe two) and the other a 3 bite version (maybe 4) The mustard looked to be "Grove Zaanse" which is the best mustard in the world (another hill I will die on) Bamibal/schijf and Nasibal/schijf (Bami is an Indonesian noodle dish, Nasi is an Indonesian rice dish) are only vegetarian if explicitly mentioned. There are also versions that contain small pieces of ham or chicken. So vegetarians should take note of that. As for Febo... haven't been there is years, I prefer the "snackbar" Jamin nowadays is a sad leftover from a really iconic candy store franchisein the Netherlands. Jamin (founded by Cornelius Jamin in 1870) hails from Rotterdam. They used to sell every type of candy imaginable, most made by Jamin themselves. There wafer icecream sandwich was iconic with Xenials and probably Millenials as well. They were the Dutch version of Wonka. Nowadays most of what they sell is made by the big companies. Jenever: Incorrect information. first, it is spelled correctly but said wrong. It is not a kopstotertje, it is a Kopstoot. Secondly a Jenever is not a kopstoot. A Jenever and Beer (seperate glasses) is a kopstoot. You down the Jenever and follow it up with the beer. There is a version called "Duikboot" (submarine) where the glass with Jenecer is dunked into the beer (wglass and all... just like *bloop* ) It is called Kopstootje because the combination can "hit you in the head" For the best pancakes in the Netherlands you have to go to Naturpark Lage Vuursche, in the little village of the same name you find the best pancake restaurants in the country, third hill I will die on. My personal favorites there are the Bosrand and Restuarant de Lage Vuursche.. purely based on how they look as all the pancake restaurants are top notch.

Hello Aimara & Gordon 😊 I came across your video amongst numerous other's but yours captured it a little bit better. I am glad to see that you found Van Dobben because they're serving things typical for Amsterdam! 1st, Ossenworst origins lay in this city. 2nd, you must try broodje Van Dobben (kroket) next time 😉. 3rd, try broodje Halfom (cooked liver and salted meat) with butter and pepper or how ever you like it. In my opinion it doesn't need salt added. It's a typical Amsterdam broodje, just try it! Haring is an all-time Dutch favorite, adding pickles comes from, you probably guess it, Amsterdam! Don't go to Leiden and ask for union and pickles with your haring, they will shake their head and ask if you're from Amsterdam 😂. Hagelslag is liked by almost every Nederlander, kids like it most but only a few grow over it! 😄 Personally I like it with peanut butter. It's always best to put it on fresh- or toasted bread, with butter of course! You'll have fun trying it without 😅 I can go on commenting on your video, talking about Amsterdams Zuur and which food from Suriname 🇸🇷 and Indonesia 🇮🇩 that I like 😋. I suggest that you do some research for yourself, maybe ask your family about it. Great food during the winter months! I hope to see you back in December! ❤

With the big pancake I would roll up the naturel ones with stroop en/of poedersuiker but the filled pancakes (my favorite is one with bacon and cheese or in dutch spek en kaas) with a bit poedersuiker (powder sugar) and slice it in to pieces. If you roll the filled ones they get so big and I like to enjoy my food instead of quickly chewing it away 😉 And that filet American you showed was a bit pale. I'm used to the brighter red Filet American you can buy in the supermarket 😉

Oh that makes sense! We were taking some massive bites out of that giant pannenkoek! Also I wouldn't have imagined poedersuiker on the savory ones 🙂 And yes... the filet american was different from the store - maybe they mixed in some mayo? I honestly don't quite remember...

I never have (or had) a saucijzenbroodje for breakfast. They're more like a snack ... when you're shopping. I had/have cheese for breakfast, but on a baguette. If they have bread for breakfast, most people I know have sliced bread with different toppings. I usually have a mix of savory and sweet: for example cheese, leverworst and peanut butter (on 3 different slices of bread). We used to walk by Febo, but since our grandson isn't a baby anymore we go there sometimes.

Hi. This video was filmed in June 2023. The weather is kind of hard to predict in AMS, so make sure to check a couple of days before your trip. As for your food budget, it depends on what, where and how much you eat. Take the prices in the video as a reference and know that if you eat at restaurants, it will be a lot more expensive. But there are options for everything! :)

And in Van Dobben I kinda hoped you would get the kroket, Van Dobben kroket is brilliant! Other than that great video and i really appreciate you guys speaking a bit Dutch (our language is hard!) Since you asked, I haven't been in febo for years, but if i go i go for the kaassouffle personally 😊 A kopstootje is a jenever in combination with beer...i don't recommend it... @@waysoftheworld_ i'm actually not from AMS, but there is a Kwekkenboom Pattiserie and they claim to have the best saucijzenbroodje. They have nice reviews and they are also the manufacturer of a very good beef kroket. Kwekkenboom and Van Dobben, which you guys visited are considered the best krokets. There is a small Surinamese restaurant called Warung Sranang Makmur and they have the best Saoto soup. The Baka bana which is battered sweet plantain is eaten with their peanut sauce is also good. And basicly all the stir fried noodles are good in the Surinamese kitchen. Maybe also try the Kapsalon fries and the Doner kebab sandwich. Which is the Dutch version of Turkish fast food, most eaten after a night out and not all that sober maybe ; ) Hopefully these recommendations suit your taste buds too. "Gezellig" actually does have a good translation. It's just very old Dutch. Gezel, means partner. So, it literally translates to partnerish, and with that, that bond partners have, is implied/meant. Be it a travel companion, (this is my metgezel. (withpartner) ) or a life partner, kompaan is a more modern version, but that does no longer connect to gezel. So from Old Dutch: Gezel mostly meant life partner, and that bond became "gezellig" --> happily together. That whole terras you were sitting on and eating on with all the others... you're all feeling nice togetherness, yes? partner in lunch, partner in enjoying time together. So that was really gezellig today. :D

Glad to help! I love languages and at home we speak a big weird mix of English and Dutch, and by now I have trouble to fully speak Dutch. Often, when Im a little stressed, like at the dentist or doctor/hospital, I suddenly find myself blabbing in English, and my partner saying, "hey, you're speaking English again! My doctors are now used to me, and let me just speak however. English is often shorter and more to the point, and often i have more trouble translating into my own Dutch language, then I have when translating from dutch to English. @@waysoftheworld_ 🤣 The one thing I always find myself lacking on, is *vocabulary*. In Dutch I will have several meanings to one word, or several words for the same thing. In English I'm more limited, especially when it comes to specific topics. If you don't know horses, you don't know what it's called what they put ON the horses. Or if you have a metal worker, I wouldn't know how to call his actions in words. But, that's the fun part, one can keep learning forever! And the best thing about language sharing... more people to be able to talk to :)))) And, "hands and feet language" often works too.

If you go to Van Dobben, you can try the kroket (also on a white roll with the mustard). It's effectively the same thing as bitterballen, so consider this mostly if you won't do those. If you eat fish, raw herring with fresh cut onions at one of the outdoor stalls is super typical. It's better to ask a local for a good one or check Google reviews, the herring isn't always equally good. Smoked eel, as well, is super typical - eel comes from a nearby lake/bay. Maybe 'Herring Stall Jonk' is a good option for you if you're in the area. Indonesian rice table 'rijsttafel' is also quite famous in Amsterdam, though obviously not originally Dutch. And if you find yourself in a typical Brown Bar, order a cheese platter so you get your fill of Dutch cheeses. French fries with mayo or mayo & peanut sauce is fantastic. There is now a restaurant in A'dam that serves stampot and traditional 'home cooked' dishes, but it is touristy because the Dutch wouldn't eat this outside the house. The restaurant is called 'Moeders'. Have fun in Amsterdam!
