We try several Dutch dishes in the Netherlands! This is our first time in the city of Utrecht. Before visiting we read and article rating Utrecht the most romantic Dutch city, so we went to feel how romantic this city felt. Of course, we also went to try several new snacks and dishes! #DutchFoodTour #Utrecht #Netherlands

How could you not go to broodje Mario in Utrecht?
@MasterSandman
@MasterSandman 7 ай бұрын
Next time when visiting a Héma in the Netherlands, go to the small hotdog-shop outside, right next to the main entrance! There you must order a "broodje rookworst"! (The correct pronunciation of almost any Dutch word with "oo" in it, is as if it was written with "oa" as in "boat"! "Stroop" is "stroap", "rook" becomes "roak". "Ou" as in "oude" is pronounced as in "outch". 😉👍) The "broodje rookworst" from the Héma is a staple in Dutch streetfood! You can get all kinds of condiments with it, like mustard, ketchup, dried fried onions (which is a killer combo!), but the classic way is with mustard alone... it's heavenly! These "rookworsts" are especially made for Héma and have their own secret recipe. You can buy them inside the store too, in the foodsection. There they are cold and prepackaged. Definitely a "must try"! 🌭😋👍

What you missed ! : * Muntkelder : poffertjes + glass of Ranja. Iconic Dutch treat for kids. I had that in De Muntkelder some 60 years ago. * HEMA : tompoes, and 1/2 rookworst. HEMA-rookworst is hands down the best. * Broodje Mario : unforgivable! It's iconic In Utrecht and about. I ate that a lot when I was a student in Utrecht. One bol makes for a whole meal. * Pandhof : right next to the Dom church * Kromme Nieuwegracht : much prettier and romantic than the Oudegracht. * singels : the parks along the singels, i.e. the old moats surrounding the medieval city bastions.

In de Voorstraat there's a small Indonesian food place that has the REAL genuine stuff called Babby's Kitchen, only does take away from saturdays 16:00 but trust me they've been slowcooking well into the day before. absolute recommend and uitstekende prijs kwaliteit!

@@nielsie86 Sure, and in the Voorstraat there is also a great Korean restaurant. But you should not tourist Utrecht for great foreign food. Broodje Mario is an exeption bcause after some 40 years it has become part of Utrecht culture. Just like Icesalon Venezia used to be on Voorstraat and Oudegracht. @@mavadelo Well, I've never heard of Il Moulino. And it is outside city centre. Anyway, Venezia is much older, *since 1928 so almost a full century now*. I thought Venezia was gone, but it seems to be still there. I remember the son of founder Italo De Lorenzo being a bit of an Italian fashion icon. Wearing a long leather coat in the same colour grey as his Great Dane.

As someone who lives half an hour drive away from Venlo, and who pretty much spent half his childhood in the Netherlands and grew up on this stuff, I can honestly say that I love dutch food and dutch supermarkets. The same goes the other way around. I grew up near the German border (even had some German friends through hobbies), and i also lived in Germany a couple of years. But only like 200m behind the border, near Wassenberg. I used to go to the Real on saturdays to go grab me a spiessbraten brötchen from some stand that was always there, and to buy some milchschnitten and other good stuff 👌🏻😂. When we went out to party, we also mostly went to Germany (much chiller vibe, i think). And of course the German christmas markets!

Missing out on Hema's 'Rookworst' is a small sin as it is their staple food delight for decades together with their 'Tompous' (although quality has significantly decrease over the years). @ Deana & Phil: Fortunately Hema's can be found all over the country so no excuse to miss these in a replay :) PS: Similar smoked sauge is used in the Dutch 'Snert' and "Erwtensoep' (pea soup) which is very well know soup and generally consumed in the winter months. Definitely one to try as well, if you want to experience our limited real Dutch cuisine.

Best walking advice in the city-center: Along the Oudegracht (main old-canal) from Nijntje Pleintje to Ledig Erf and back, each way on the other side of the canal. And go around (full circle) the old city-center next to the Singel (it has several "streetnames") a nice mix of parks and architecture. If you don't like the long walk and want to shorten it, go towards the Dom-tower, you can see it from everywhere.

The bunny at the end is "Nijntje" or "Miffy" in English. She's the main character in a series of picture books for toddlers. Her creator is called "Dick Bruna" and he's from Utrecht. The little label said "Ik ben niet voor de verkoop", meaning "I am not for sale". Probably because it looks like the employees at the bookstore had sown the yellow book onto her hands (being Dutch and having seen a lot of stuffed "Miffy's", I have never seen one holding a book, usually it's just different fabrics or costumes). Also, frikadellen and kroketten (or bamischijven, kaas soufflés etc.) would be doable to bring home with you on a 3 hour home journey, as long as you put it in the freezer as soon as you get home(I mean, Dutch people are sometimes in a similar situation when combining shopping and grocery shopping if they visit another village or city, then it's not uncommon to have those items being outside of a freezer for 3 hours as well).

I was just about to go there actually, but I stopped to watch this video! You should really come back in the winter for some traditional erwtensoep met rookworst, it is the best dish to eat when it is freezing outside! Also, did you try a Frikandelbroodje yet? I would say it is a staple food item for a quick lunch grab here. Great video, nice to see Utrecht from your perspective. Next to that, it's also the birthplace of Gerrit Rietveld, one of the most famous Dutch architects and designers. The HEMA is indeed more suitable for a quick coffee break. Ah, my hometown. As others already mentioned, you missed the item that made HEMA the place to go... their famous Rookworst. Half a warm rookworst in a tiny paper bag. It has been a Dutch classic since 1936. In many countries kids go shopping with their parents and if they behave they might get icecream or McDonalds, we would get a Hema Rookworst (and it would be the highlight of the day) As kids dom we made "weird acronims" of the names of companies. The original meaning of HEMA is "Hollandse Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam" (Hollandsche Unitary Prizes Company Amsterdam) but we made that into Hier Eet Men Afval (one eats garbage here) Soup: the Dutch classics are Tomato, Vegetable, Snert (thick split pea soup, a wintersoup), Bruine Bonen soep (Brown bean soup, also a wintersoup), Ossenstaart (oxtail) , Koninginnensoep (queens soep) and "Hungarian Goulash Soup"

For the next one, try to visit an ‘Amazing Oriental’ supermarket. Maybe fun to do a comparison with what you got in Düsseldorf.

Amazing Oriental has expanded into Germany. There it is called "Go Asia". At least in Berlin there are a number of them.

Thank you for another great video. Your content is always a pleasure to watch. The food looks fantastic, but please. When sour cream or olive oil is added on the top of a dish, you are not supposed to mix it in. They could easily have done that in the kitchen. The added layer is to make a sensation of contrast when eating. Pleas try again, without mixing, and you will have another greater experience.

You know Vla is an dessert. You put it in a bowl and eat it with a spoon. You could add slagroom or mix it with yoghurt. My dad had his own vla recipe where he would add strawberry jam, raisins and current (aalbes) to his vla.

You should really try pepernoten (kruidnoten) next time you are here. They are only widely available from October to January. They are pertty similar to speculaas only way smaller, crunchier and optionally covered with chocolate or other stuff.

Hi D&P. Maybe a late reaction, but VLA also comes in other flavoures then VANILLA, like HOPJES and CHOCOLATE. In most of the dutch supermarkets there are also small portions of dessert aviable based on vla (even from a german brand named EHRMANN). Keep up the good work ! I'm always curious to see your next clip. -😘😇-

Next time at Hema try the tompouce. Bit disappointed you didn't get a broodje Mario. When you in the street trying the enjoying the kip burger from Febo. You were very close to a Belgian style pub in an old church. Not the same as the pub called België. That has over a hundred different types of beer.

Regarding the tomato soup, the "parsley" was actually Thyme, and the fact that it was chunky does not make it like a Bolognese, which is a meat-dominant sauce with three times as much meat as tomato. I love the Netherlands and parts of Germany are beautiful or exceptionally cosmopolitan, but when it comes to food, there's a reason many people from Northern Europe venture south -- the food along the Mediterranean is so much better, fresher and vibrant. Thanks for showing us Utrecht, which is beautiful.
