You miss the point of this design. This isn't about following rules, people are generally very bad at that. This is about human interaction. What you perceive as near accidents were simply well calculated passes in front or just behind other traffic users. The junction was a black spot before, but not anymore. This has proven to be safer.

I do love how the Danes move quickly and efficiently. They move out really close to other vehicles and don't take long to figure out who has the right of way. In NorthAmerica everyone is so slow with right-of-way :D

The cyclist didn't block anything there, as the narration says: there was another reason: further down in the street the bridge was open, stopping all traffic well beyond the roundabout. But as you can see: cyclists could simply carry on at the roundabout.

I really like your videos. Your sound is very calming, and the videos are informative. A cyclist from Budapest. Unfortunately you are called a cyclist here if you commute on bike(i think in Amsterdam or Coppenhagen you are not called cyclist, because everybody rides), but fortunately we are growing, 10 years ago the city is nearly empty in the winter months, but now, I am not the only one who is cycling to work or to the shop.

Trams will give priority when necessary. This week an older cyclist got caught in front of the tram and couldn't turn off. The tram slowed down and followed patiently until the cyclist found a place to turn off. I've also seen them stop and wait while a car is trying to back into a parking place. I've never seen them ring the bell or act impatient.

About the tram. It doesn't have a full priority like mentioned. When a tram is crossing sharkteeth it has to waith for the other drivers (cycles / mopeds / cars etc) In this situation (Hugo de Grootplein) there are trafficlights, so the tram can continue its way.
@BicycleDutch11 жыл бұрын
No, what was said was 'when traffic has to stop for any other reason'. There can be lots of reasons why traffic has to stop apart from heavy traffic alone. That happens on every type of junction, would have happened on a cross roads junction too.

Very unfortunately they are allowed in the bike lanes. They are supposed to be limited to 25km/h but everyone just disables the rev limiter. quineloe in the netherlands there are 2 types of scooters: with a blue number plate which have a max speed of 25 and don’t need to wear a helmet and can only use the bike paths. Then there is the yellow number plate which have a max speed of 50 and you’ll need to wear a helmet, also only legal to drive on the road. This scooter here took the bicycle lane because it was probably faster for him... but he was not allowed to do that

A setup like this is genius and so innovative and impressive. With that being said living in Toronto, Canada, this is far too complicated and scary for the average North American driver who gets a panic attack at the mere sight of a roundabout. North America in general has probably one of the most basic and lazily designed road systems in the world. If an 8 year old had the physical capability they could drive here easily. Btw in Toronto we have a really bad traffic problem but we have traffic lights absolutely everywhere and VERY rarely any roundabouts. This tram, which we have several here, going through the circle would never happen in a million years here. Our drivers are too stupid to figure it out and would just have a meltdown guaranteed 🤣

@@riesjart1000 That is actually not true. They started to build the network because of the high amount of cyclist being killed, especially children. Before the second world war there were 4 million bikes in the Netherland. Even after the war, the bike was a popular way to transport for a while. Then in the 1950s, the use of the bike got less and less because cars became more popular. Some experts back then even though the bike would be history. However, people still like there bike and dislike the fact that a lot of people got killed that they felt the need to protest. Resulting in the changes in the 1970s, revitalizing the use of bikes. So the Dutch always had a rich cycling culture. The change where made because this was something we were about to lose and the people did not like that. fietspadenstichting.nl/honderd%20jaar%20fietscultuur.pdf

There are special traffic light that turn red when a tram goes trough, they shark teeth are there when the traffic light doesn't work, its the same at most intersections with traffic lights that there are also yield signs and shark teeth for when the traffi light doesn't work.

Interesting. The most important feature of its success is _flow_ ! No-one goes very fast, but then people rarely have to stop. It would be interesting to suddenly swap a UK roundabout in NL for this one into the UK. I'm pretty sure it would be regarded as an unethical experiment, as UK drivers are likely to cause carnage. (those that think paying pollution tax means they own the roads) It does rely on them respecting cyclists safety - not yet OK in the UK. More space would help safe merging ?

Here in Switzerland, people who are too lazy to cycle buy one of these new electric scooters. No - I would say >1.5m clearances. 1:36 Cyclist is very fast (30 ° lean at first turn) and not signalling - confidence says "Don't worry - I'm fine" - he chooses to get close. 1:42 cyclist is looking left, suddenly sees car in front brake, so he brakes hard. All for no reason. 1:44+1:48 no 2:20 negotiation is a few seconds before impact. Bike 2 will see 1 braking. There's probably a 'Don't overtake at a junction' rule ? 1:57 Don't trust "Looking will make them stop". Needs more dragon teeth !
@ericd770911 жыл бұрын
A huge part of this is culture - IIRC pedestrians aren't even allowed to cross German roads except at specific controlled times and places. Very rule-bound. This is a trusting and trustworthy community where each respects the other's safety, and priority is negotiated - signalling, braking and eye-contact. OTOH note that 6 or 7 cyclists are phoning or texting (while moving) or riding one-handed - confident. Consistency would help - motorists and cyclists who are timid or aggressive stand out.

If you are not Dutch born and used to this, I advise you not to drive or cycle in cities; you stand a good chance of killing or being killed. I have lived in the Netherlands for 20 years since I was 54, and whilst I cycle on my electric fiets(bicycle), I live in the quieter area of Oosterbeek/Arnhem. The Dutch have developed a unique cycling culture and road infrastructure design that enables transportation like this to thrive. For non Dutch people it can be terrifying.. Agree. When I was in the NL as a non-Dutch, I was so scared to cycle and almost had a few accidents even though I wasn't in a big city (I was in Groningen). Still, I don't dare to ride a bike right next to/in front of the motor traffics passing me by.

Because a bikers action is not always predictable and the majority of the bikers are under the 18. Thats why cyclist an pedestrians always go first. There are signs if not. Also cars and motorists are more vulnerable to crashes. Thats why car lessons in netherlands are so complicated and hard to get. In return the netherlands become one of the safest countries in transportation..

I think it was a terrible idea to tell the scooter to go. The father can't speak for other cyclists. Like a driver in one lane flashing lights can't speak for the other lanes. People will pass and the junction that has priority already clearly marked gets confusing and dangerous. These "nice" manners are a liability and they should be removed from the road.
