Amsterdam's Coolest Neighbourhood: Walking De Pijp (August 2022)

Thank you very much for making this video! I will travel to Amsterdam for the first time this summer for 5 nights, and my bed and breakfast is in this neighborhood. From the airport I will take a train to Centraal Station and then take the Metro #52 south to De Pijp station, so it was nice to get a visual orientation to what I can expect to see in the station and then up to the street and the surrounding area. Although as an American I was sorry to see a Dunkin Donuts and a Baskin Robbins immediately upon exiting the Metro station! Ugh! LOL!

These Amsterdam videos are a revelation to me. I didn't know how beautiful of a city it is. The Dutch must be proud of the city. I'm not surprised to learn it was the richest capital in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (1600-1700). In the Dutch Golden Age, the Dutch were acclaimed for their science, military, and trade The city was financed by the Dutch East India Company which established its own spice trade in direct competition with Portugal. Amsterdam isn't highlighted that often in movies unlike the other great capitals of Europe like Paris and London. Sorry, I'm ranting... history is a hobby of mine.

thank you for these words, as a dutch person we are ''proud'' of amsterdam because the fame it gets but we dont really like how it is today with the mass tourism and just the vibe there today in general. Eventho amsterdam is known to almost everybody you indeed dont see it as much in movies as other famous european cities.

Fun fact, when this neighbourhood was built this kind of architecture was considered cheap and mediocre. It was a working class neighbourhood and quite some of the buildings actually collapsed because of bad building quality. And of course one building housed like 4+ families of which each had 3+ children. This was post our Golden Age and our country was poorer than other countries around us. It was not quite a slum but it came close to it. At that time Belgium the UK, Germany and France were all rich in coal and heavy industrial powers and erecting all kinds of monumental buildings. Every European city wanted to remodel their city to look like Paris. Medieval and quaint looking buildings was very much out of fashion. It's why many European cities look quite a bit similar, they rebuilt their medieval districts or their suburbs to look as Parisian as possible. We only managed to build a couple of those buildings. Also, no, on average Dutch people "hate" the capital more than people do in other countries. They think it's so unique that Amsterdam is "arrogant" and "gets all the attention" and that "Amsterdam isn't special at all", like that doesn't happen to other capitals as well. Even though all things considered, our country isn't even that centralized in Amsterdam (compared to the vast majority of countries). Amsterdam is wayyy smaller than the larger metropolises of London and Paris. But it does have an international big city vibe in some ways compared to other cities of similar size.

They certainly like their bikes in Amsterdam. It seemed to be mopeds or low powered motorbikes in Paris.

A lot has changed, back in the 90s this park was a no go zone you walk through at 13:00 it was full of drug dealers and homeless people and alcoholics. If you needed heroin, this was the spot to get it, I moved out of Amsterdam because it was such a hellhole, but seeing how relaxing it is now I might go back again.

Rotterdam got stacked metrolines for years, at least for more than 40 years and was planned in the 60-ies. Another fact, recently the B-line stops literately ‘on’ the beach of Hoek-van-Holland.

Lovely De Pijp. Big difference though between De Pijp east and west of Ceintuurbaan. And beyond De Pijp is Rivierenbuurt, also a pretty cool area.

The Albert Cuyp market looks empty, for it is always full. You must come late on a Saturday when they are about to close up for the Sunday.....

This underground station and line has cost a lot of money to make this happen!Imagine there are a lot off poles in the ground to get a sturdy support for the buildings above.And then comes this under those poles,so they have to support those poles while constructing the Metro.That cost a lot off time and money..

Nice to see you walk through The Pijp. Most visitors just stick to the old town and miss out on a slightly more authentic and local vibe in the neighborhoods surrounding it. Ive been living in The Pijp for more than 10 years now and I find it the perfect balance with still some hustle and bustle to get that big city feel, but less touristy and chaotic than the old town. I really has a mixed population from working class to wealthy and lots of nationalities present, so a great place to find some local style international restaurants that arent just for tourists, so better quality and more reasonably priced. Especially the Surinamese restaurants are often great, and offer something different with many dishes, from Creole, to Hindustani, Indonesian and Chinese reflecting a part of the colonial past of the country. Also the night life is great in some of the side streets of the Albert Cuyp market, some tourists but mostly locals. A lot of students seem to prefer going out here instead of the city center. So I definitely recommend visiting. The Pijp lacks some of the more famous landmarks perhaps but its just a very pleasant area to hang out, shop, eat and so forth.

I guess De Pijp is technically an island, yes, but most areas of Amsterdam technically are, being surrounded by canals. And while it used to be a lower-cost neighbourhood a couple decades ago, by now it's been gentrified to hell and back just like most of the inner city. There are a lot more touristy stalls all just selling the same crap on Albert Cuypmarkt now, too.
