@@mikatu But taking a night train is also an experience, you don't solely do it for transport from A to B, but for the experience. Plus it is way more relaxing and less stress, as train stations are mostly in the city centres, opposed to airports outside of cities, then no stress of checking in, security check (and if applicable baggage claim in the end)), by the time you have that managed getting to an airport gate, you can have snuggled in into a your comfy bed on the train already and rest while you get to your destination. Very nice, but I'd recommend making this journey in daylight. I worked in Amsterdam in the 90s, and from time to time had to travel elsewhere in Europe, and would always take the train, if feasible. My favourite trip was to Zurich, leaving at 8am in the morning; it was a whole day trip, arriving at 5pm. I'd invariably travel 1st class (cheaper than flying, at least at the time), and bring some sandwiches and snacks. Seating in the Swiss-built 1st class was 2+1 with very large windows, so I'd be sitting in a very comfortable armchair, watching the landscape go by. A wonderful experience, especially the stretch along the Rhine was amazingly beautiful.
@seat612 жыл бұрын
The day trip is great if you use the classic Rhine Valley line, www.seat61.com/places-of-interest/rails-down-the-rhine.htm - but you'll be routed via the Cologne-Frankfurt high-speed line by default these days. On a trip to Italy, I think Amsterdam-Zurich by night, Zurich-Milan by day is the right way round.

How do those work? Could you shed a bit more light, anyone ?

You sleep where you like. Put child on lower bunk, you sleep on upper bunk. It doesn't need explaining, surely? Actually, a child of 3 or 4 would be fine on an upper bunk, there are straps, I have yet to hear of any falling out (same with bunk beds in a hotel)

@seat612 жыл бұрын
Took me a while to realise what you meant. You mean the sleeping-car (which is technically all 2nd class) was missing so they put you in a couchette compartment (the only actual 1st class car on this train is a seats car). Yes, the AB33 sleeping-cars have had problems - they date from 1975, completely rebuilt in the 1990s and leased from RDC as about the only equipment available to start this service before the new sleeper trains being built by Siemens come into service. Not ideal. If you watch the video, as the train sweeps into Amsterdam you'll notice my sleeping-car, Paris-Zurich car 176 is distinguished by its absence behind the couchette car at the rear of the train. A good job the camera was pointing away from my face at the time! I asked to be reassigned a berth in the Amsterdam-Basel car at the front, so it all worked out OK. At the moment, a MUn sleeper is currently substituting for the AB33s while they are sent away to have some serious work done on them to make them more reliable. They only have to soldier on till the new trains enter service at the end of 2022 and into 2023.

@@seat61 thanks for your detailed reply. My wife and I were just normal tourist visitors to Europe. Apart from enjoying occasional train travel, we knew nothing about carriage types etc. We just expected to arrive at Amsterdam station, get in a Quality carriage and overnight to Zurich in relative comfort. That was not to be. Language problems did not help, and neither did my temperament, (I tend to yell a lot at continentals, in the absence of good language skills) however I think the ‘customer service’ ladies on the platform told me a tree had fallen in a storm the previous night and damaged the First class carriage. They took my ticket, scribbled a letter and number on it, (over the printed number,) and told us to hurry up and board as the train was leaving. When we got to Basl we had to change carriages for some reason without warning and travel on to Zurich. Never again.

Too bad this line made some bad press due to having cars missing regularly. I hope that doesn't completely ruin the line. Also, it is being done wrong all the time, but it's either "Basel Badischer Bahnhof" or "Basel Bad. Bf." as an abbreviation. It's got nothing to do with any kind of bath :)

Does “Badischer” in this context relate to the train line leading into the German state of Baden Württemberg?
@elgoog-the-third2 жыл бұрын
@@vincentchan4576 It does indeed, the station was built by the then-monarchy Baden and is to this day in possession of Germany, together with the tracks from the station to Switzerland's border.

@@vincentchan4576 there are two more "Bad. Bf."s in Switzerland which are owned by the Deutsche Bahn. Beringen Bad Bf and Neuhausen Bad Bf.

Basel Bad Bahnhof is the name everybody uses for that station. No one uses Badischer.

Pity the compartments are designed like cells, no style at all. Even the grey curtain looks as if it was chosen to be deliberately utilitarian. Is it a USSR train lol. Get some designer in to make it all a zillion times more appealing. Bad design costs customers.
