This mini-masterpiece gets as close as any music to reaching the ‘English soul’. Impossible to explain, but if you’re not English and this brings a lump to your throat, then you’ll understand. It was used in Ken Russell’s biopic film ‘Elgar’ (1962), to accompany the ‘young Elgar’ riding his pony on Malvern Hills. A more brilliant ‘marriage’ of music and imagery, I have never seen.
