I wasn't familiar with this work until lately and I must agree with the approach of this work with this orchestra. Imagine a Russian Orchestra doing the best justice to and English composers work...who would have thought.....I loved it

Probably the best, most passionate, yet most precise playing of this masterpiece, certainly on KZbin I have ever listened to and watched. It surely benefits from a conductor, who can offer tiny subtleties of timing hard for a conductor less ensemble to achieve.. Elgar here achieved such an incredible combination of classical concerto gross o elements with grandeur, energetic power and sweep, with yearning emotion, this has to be at the very apex of great composition of any period, and the playing meets the stupendous technical challenges. Bravo!

This is superbly recorded and played. The piece can sometimes sound 'mushy' and is too frequently trivialized by our British ensembles. In some eerie way this reminds me of a performance by Barbirolli close to end of his life, with a section of the Halle Orchestra at the King's Lynn Festival decades ago. The work certainly needs a conductor because its many layers are deceptive and holding the contrapuntal parts together can be tricky. The conductor and players must also feel the deep passions between the quartet and strings. Elgar (a string player) knew his craft and composed a true masterwork.

I think this is the best KZbin recording of this music of genius. The presence of a conductor creates tiny subtleties of tempo and intonation denied a group with no conductor.

This is the most beautiful piece by Elgar in my view. There is a section that is like fireworks exploding with the various string sections all going off one after the other. For me, it brings vivid pictures to my mind of the beauty of the Malvern hills, with that sublime theme like the view over the countryside below after a long hard climb. Beautifully played, with such passion and love.

See if you can acquire the Anthony Collins recording of it - that is looked upon by those aware of this piece in general as the best - it's fascinating - and the perfect pizzicato note at the end...

Amazing performance. That viola solo by Alexander at 2:00 is marvelous. I am in love with Julia and on top of being so gorgeous, she plays beautifully!

Unbelievably good playing (for anybody) from what appears to be a chamber orchestra with a 20-yr median age. Simply remarkable. Congratulations and thank you.

This has long been one of my favorite Elgar compositions. The contrast and combining of the lyric and energetic is done superbly. Thank you for making the performance accessible to me in your video whenever I wish.

Yes, that's the wonder: they're so YOUNG. I think that both John Barbirolli and Benjamin Britten might rise to their feet to call, "Bravo!"

I'm a Scot & I want an independent Scotland. But I love the music of Elgar. These brilliant Russians play this piece as well as I've ever heard it. Beautiful! What is all this recent xenophobia from British Brexiteers?
@michaelclark57327 жыл бұрын
To hell with them! Incidentally Elgar disliked 'Pomp & Circumstance' being used for the jingoistic 'Hope and Glory', particularly during WWI. He was fond of Germany and had friends there, and several early successes. ;)

it isn't xenophobia from British Brexiteers. These Russians are not in the EU, by the way.

I'm a Scot ... BUT I love the music of Elgar? Why BUT? I'm an Englishman born in the next village to Elgar. . . BUT / AND I play the bagpipes. Which conjunction should I use?
@Stivulya6 жыл бұрын
Nowt jingoistic about "Land of Hope and Glory". It's nice to sing something altogether. Jingoism is in the eye of the beholder.
