Longplay and review for "Sly Spy Secret Agent" on the Amstrad CPC! But a NEW UPDATED version that patches in audio and music for all the levels in the game!!
You see this Ocean Software conversion of the hit arcade coin-op (and outrageous James Bond 007 rip-off!) from Data East was actually pretty decent but in game was deathly silent! However a few weeks ago Jean-Marie on the CPC Wiki Forums produced a new special version importing all the music from the Atari ST version into the Amstrad version! Plus some other nice touches. So it's this version we're going to be reviewing and longplaying today!
Not only that, but I have tracked down the original coder of the Amstrad version Dean Belfield for an interview in this video!!
Plus we will take a close look at the arcade coin-op original, then later all the other conversions of Sly Spy for the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Atari ST and Amiga! I guess we'll see how they compare to the CPC and it's new version! More importantly, does the introduction of music make a significant difference and is the Amstrad port now the best 8-bit version?
Let's find out as I don the tuxedo and turn into XySpy....! 🤵

I have a great memory of watching in amazement as someone completed this game at my local cinema's foyer as a kid. Thanks for another great vid Xyphoe. I particularly enjoyed your chat with the coder. Just finished watching this on Friday evening so heading over to your livestream soon.

Thanks Heyhon! Glad you liked it! :) If you're looking for a coin-op you can complete... Sly Spy is one! You can learn where enemies spawn, and take it slowly - with practice, you can beat it!

I was a huge fan of the arcade game. One of the few I could clear with a single coin. I'm really impressed by the CPC conversion. Thank you for another fine video Xyphoe 👌🏼

Merci Henri! Me too! Big fan of the coin-op and you can find a longplay of that elsewhere on my channel too! It's quite a short game too and a like a few other Data East arcade games (like Robocop arcade), where enemies appear are predictable so with practice and learning you can take your time and know where they will come and move forward bit by bit rather than rush through - the game is much more manageable then. Rushing through will just allow enemies to swarm you.

I have this on st and amiga and agree with what you say about the speed, was actually shocked when I saw how fast the 8-bit versions were!

Yes! It really shouldn't be struggling on a 16-bit machine, but then a lot of arcade conversions at the time seemed to. Original games written specifically to the Amiga strengths from 1991 onwards did so much better, those were the better years for the Amiga in my opinion!

This revision really makes this a killer port on the CPC. 🎉

I'm really loving it as you already know! Being a sad Bond fan, I already loved the arcade original and liked the original conversion anyway! This is just the icing on the cake for me!

The arcade version used the same hardware as Dragonninja and Robocop, hence the similar look and feel 😀 The Amiga version has a killer soundtrack

That is true! All from Data East, and you can find them all appearing in the arcade featured in the Robocop 2 movie! The music is good in the Amiga version yes, but I don't know if it fits the game well or not.

@@Xyphoe Well, it's quite diverse and atmospheric, like many Bond soundtracks 😁

Impressive. I wonder if the music could be added to the Speccy version too?
@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
I don't see why not! Similar AY chip, and I expect there should be enough space left in the 128k version... depends if Jean-Marie is interested enough! Or someone else in the Speccy scene could take on the job!

C64 is best on my opinion. HiRes sprites , great graphic & sound. Very playable.
@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
That's definitely fair! It's a really great version, before this 'new' CPC version I ranked the C64 one as the best. I didn't quite get on with the stiff controls as much, and enemies appear quick and shoot very quickly which can get annoying... plus the 'you can't duck under enemy shots thing' is WTF?!! Positives and negatives for both CPC and C64 versions... because the CPC version is too easy and has some poor hit detection in places, and is missing some content. :)

@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
....? Still not sure what you're referring to. All the game footage I captured and recorded myself - that's the Amstrad, arcade (Mame), ZX Spectrum, C64, Atari ST and Amiga. The box art and advert scans are all from the CPC-Power website and used with full permission from the webmaster Kukulcan. The additional background music is all composed and recorded by my good mate Rich aka "24:7", again all used with his full permission and he's credited with links in the description of the video. Dean's photo used in the video he sent to me himself and said to use in the video! So.... ?
