Welcome to the third and final installment of our AMT Hat Trick series with the AMT Automag III chambered in .30 Caliber Carbine. What a monster this pistol is. Here we will explore this pistol in detail, namely it's unique chambering and surprisingly manageable recoil. We will also, once again, tough on some AMT history surrounding the companies founder Harry Sanford, as well as explore our last "tidbit" of AMT/Auto Mag lore.
While some speak badly about AMT there was a tremendous amount of innovative design involved with the guns they produced as well as a constant "thinking outside the box" mentality that I grew to respect and be fascinated by. It may be true that they need a little bit more "incentive" to function than most guns but they never "played it safe" making clones of what everyone else was doing and breaking new ground constantly is not an easy task if all your being judged by is perfect function.
Thanks for tuning in.....subscribe and turn on notifications to be alerted when the next videos drop and check out these other instalments in our AMT "Hat Trick" series.

This was a spectacular video! Sanford was ahead of his time with the Automag III, I personally think this blows the Dirty Harry .44 out of the water! It’s a shame it didn’t catch on though, this really was something special! The Pasadena Days book is also an amazing find! I was gonna see if I could nab one online, but it seems to be a discontinued print. I hate to ask, but would you ever consider cam-scanning the book into a pdf? That’s all, this was a wonderful presentation. Keep making more! P.S. - I don’t know if you’ve watched them already, but I feel like you’d get a kick out of watching Eugene Stoner’s interviews: kzbin.info/aero/PLOSc8D2U-Hf6i9FT7ZzVpKZVDBsS6b3Ub&si=Uwx7O8s1SGHiHN2i .

Good video -- The Automag III is a very fun gun to shoot, has an excellent trigger. The gun runs well with most ammo. Did I say it is fun to shoot? YES, it is Fun!

Nice find. Have seen these for sale locally, but not for a long time. You want good ear protection. Probably as loud as the Ruger Blackhawk 30 Carbine.

Auto Mag (two words) is back in production. Right now they are getting caught up on backlog production. They ARE expensive. If you really want to experience shooting joy get the model 180 in 44 or the the 160 in 357 AMP.

Great vid, lots of good info. Just wanted to mention a couple of things if you don't mind. Concerning the 9MM Win Mag. Brass is available from Starline. It's on backorder at the moment, but I ordered a batch from them about 2 months ago so it is in semi-current production. The 9MM WM can be shortened to 9MM Mauser but not the other way around, the Mauser is 9x25 but the 9MM WM is 9x29. The 44AMP cartridge was made by trimming down 308 or 30/06 casings, but the brass also had to be reamed to accept a .429 slug. The Auto Mag IV was also available in 10MM Win Mag.

Harry was a pioneer. Think how many gun designers and manufactures created their own round. Thanks for the info, very helpful to those looking to create their own.

@@MilsurpGarage You're welcome. I whole heartedly agree about Sanford being a pioneer. I don't agree with his business practices, but his enthusiasm and drive to develop the firearms that he did I think is pretty remarkable. I was a fan ever since I saw Sudden Impact and the Auto Mag, and of course the 45 Long Slide from Terminator. Those eventually led to a slight "addiction" to his designs which now occupy what some may consider a collection within a collection.

See? I wasn’t kidding. One is fine.......I feel bad for the people who bought the AMT without a mag expecting to just grab one up. The aftermarket, from what I hear, is junk (ESPECIALLY for these). It’s a distinctive look....keep an eye open at those gun show bins full of unmarked mags for $10 each.....you might get lucky.

My first 1911 was an AMT Government. In the end the AMT ended up being one of the worst quality pistols I ever had. People talk about guns of the past being so great but they most of never had an AMT before. THe gun functioned however it was the "sharpest" gun I ever had. The gun would cut your hand up on all the sharp edges of the parts. Also the gun had issues with galling on the friction surfaces of the slide and frame. The fit and finish was not that good either. In my opinion the new 1911s are a million times better than the old ones were. My Dan Wesson 1911 is a thing of beauty and perfection unmatched by any production pistol of the past.

I’ve done so much Harry Sanford research I feel like I earned the right to answer this as him. Here’s what Harry would say....... “Let me ask you this....what did you pay for the AMT? Okay, now what did you pay for the Dan Wesson? Exactly. Secondly, did you oil the rails and slide friction surfaces well with oil like Milsurp Garage showed you in his amazing AMT Hat Trick Series of KZbin videos? Exactly. Now, as far as your refund, unfortunately, that company is out of business but you can buy a new one from my new company......” If you pray for rain you have to deal with the mud too. Thanks for tuning in!

Stainless steel is a bitch and a half to machine, you have to have all carbide tooling, and it still wears that out quickly. Another reason to use investment casting. I think it would be hideously expensive to machine it from bar stock just from cost of cutting tools.
