In October and November 2020, the California State Railroad Museum and its Sacramento Southern Railroad brought a rare locomotive, the Amtrak F40PHR #281, back to life for the first time since 2005. AMTK 281 was last operated in September 2005, when the F40 and SP 6051 traveled to San Francisco to pick up SP 2467 for a loan display at the CSRM. In May 2020, the SSRR crew brought the F40 out for a few test runs under its own power and it ran like a champ!
Today, AMTK 281 has joined the SSRR’s motive power selection for excursion trains and will be in operation for years to come. The CSRM, railfans and myself are all thrilled to see an Amtrak F40 operating once again since it brings back memories of the early days of Amtrak. Happy 50th Anniversary to Amtrak:)
